4chan brought down by Distributed Denial of Service Attack (408)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-20 14:41 ID:mDrphH4G [Del]

> 4chan is down because of DDoS attacks, stemming from a bunch of guys that are angry that moot doesn't want to move #4chan to lulznet.

-Kirtaner (of 420chan).

No real reasons to distrust this information, really. Let's hope it didn't hit 'em too hard. I must say, with the traffic that 4chan get, it must have been one fucking tidal wave of a DDOS.

2 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-20 15:25 ID:Heaven [Del]

This brings up a number of questions...

  • Why would anyone care what network the IRC channel is on, much less care enough to DDoS the site because of it? That's about the most ridiculous reason to attack something I've heard in a long while.
  • re. "No real reasons to distrust this information": are you implying in some way that because Kirtaner said this, that he might be somehow involved?
  • What happened to the irc channel, if anything?

No, not at all, it's just that he's 'friends' with moot (reportedly from before moot even started 4chan), that and the fact that Kirt has been correct about these sort of things before.

IRC fags are HARDCORE! That said, it still sounds like a pretty shitty reason.

I'd more likely believe a visit from the party van or other legal faggotry has gone down, or maybe the ads haven't worked out and it's back to DONATE OR DIE.

O RLY?

Not only 4chan, but 7chan, 12chan & 420chan are down too.

COINCIDENCE?!

Can't be purely because of DDoS'sing 'from a bunch of guys that are angry that moot doesn't want to move #4chan to lulznet.'

The word going round is that YTMND & Ebamsworld are DDoS-attacking all these boards. This sounds the most credible theory, but I wonder... Could it be either those invaded by Anon in the past have organized & started getting their revenge against Anon, or have the Admins of ALL these boards been partyv&d in a sweep of these boards by the FBI? Whatever, I hope the shutdown is permanent. Anon has no-one to blame but themselves. Thety're to blame. If they'd STRICTLY followed Rules 1 & 2, and hadn't gone beyond their own little universe, all the -chans would still be up. But Anon started getting ideas above their stations & went beyond said little world & went out into RL, for their so-called 'Lulz'. And not just invasions. It was the death threats, then Messing With Football. The result? THAT report on Fox News, which blew Rules 1 & 2 apart. The WHOLE WORLD heard of Anon (ever heard of YouTube?!). Now the Lulz is upon them. Call it Karma. The Biter Bitten. One thing's for sure: Those Who Live By 'Lulz' shall DIE By Lulz. And the only one Lulz-ing now are those who brought down the -chans.

I for one welcome our /b/ & Anon-less Internet. Anonymous has become An Hero.

>>25 >>COINCIDENCE?!

Yes. No one's attacked iichan, for one thing. 7 and 12chan went up and down all the time, but no one notices until 4chan happens to at the same time. There is no campaign against imageboards.

There is also no cabal.

28 Name: !zSGCho0BnY : 2007-10-21 14:30 ID:ogJNUUZz [Del]

7chan ddosed 4chan. 4chan is not being ddosed anymore. 4chan is down and will be down until their host works everything out with moot and co. (nullrouted etc)

there is no real reason why the ddosing was done. i was told by the attackers that the whole 'we ddosed 4chan because they didn't move to our network' thing was a lie and it was in fact done for the lulz.

hmmm what else.. oh yeah, it wasn't 'lulznet' that attacked 4chan. 7chan was a part of lulznet but they are not any longer. if you actually believe that an IRC network attacked a website then perhaps you should spend less time at the computer.. or more.. who knows?

doubt it. 4chan and ytmnd may not get along, but they have put aside their differences before to fight ebaums. it's unlikely that ytmnd would forget who they spawned off of and fight against its own father.

>>Summary:
>>There is no cabal and no FBI raid, just some Internet Tough Guys who won't even let a tired and broken admin enjoy a meager bowl of soup. As with all things, the entirety of /i/ is not to blame.. those such as Kakama, however, who strive for little more than auto-fellating their ePeens are. And for what? To say "lulz" would be a idiotic cop-out, but honestly, look in the mirror the next time you rush into the bathroom to drain the spooge you've hastily cupped between your hand and naked stomach. Just ask yourself, "what the fuck am I doing with my life?"
>>Likewise, those Anonymous who are outraged at the rape of their motherland or IRC channel should also question themselves. There was once a man who said, "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." This man also drank his own urine, though - perhaps his advice should be taken with a tax-free grain of salt. Try this reasoning instead: these are our internets, our home. Anonymous has more pressing things to deal with than pitiful in-fighting. He need not forgive and will certainly never forget, but he is not obligated to continue such a pointless cycle of drama. Indeed, the well-cultured Anonymous would simply laugh at the absurdity of it all and post more Bridget.
>>After all, everyone is gay for Bridget; and this unity is comforting.

God damn /i/ faggots. Amen.

You win an infinite number of internets. If it weren't for whoever broke Rules 1 and 2 in the first place, none of us would give a shit about all of this. It's like Fight Club (which the first few rules were based off of). It's meant to be a totally exclusive club, but you can't keep something a secret for long, no matter how awesome it is. I was told about 4chan by at least six different people on the same day. Naturally, I kept it a secret for about a year, and then BOOM! Boards go down for the first time in a year and I freak out. I ask all my /b/tarded friends about it, and they all directed me to a shitload of other /b/tards who were even moar hardcore than the other people. It's a neverfucking ending cycle of violence and CP, but it needs to happen as more and more people get disgusted with 4chan's current state and sign off once and for all. If it weren't for 1&2 (the abscence thereof), there would be no more 4chan. It would've simply gone down with Moot and the original few who knew about it and sank without a bubble.

cho0b: Only blocks can be null-routed (minimum a /5 but depends). All 4chan has is 3 IPs.

You're right about the rules.. /b/ has ZOMG NO RULES!

Anyway, if this is really a DDoS, and 4chan manages to intermittently come back during the attack, then it's very weak. Counting with 0.5 mbit as an average upload speed, one only needs 200 zombies to saturate 100 mbit. Small botnets start at 10000..

(Cross-posted from iichan because it sums this up niceley.)

Lets put this as clear and simple as possible.

One, this whole OMG YOU RAID ME I RAID YOU business is as retarded as it gets, topped only by what started this whole mess. A bunch of what, 17 year old kids whining about IRC? Please.

Two, this will be over in due time. Idiots get bored fast.

Three, there is no point in attacking any single IP address. There is no point in trying to counter a distributed denial of service attack with another one. That helps no one.

The people who would actually suggest something like that should probably get off iichan, and go back to whatever hole they creeped out of.

(Also, DDoSing a site does not make you an 31337 h4x0r. All that you need for this is a distinct lack of a life, giving you enough time to figure out how to use one of several readily available tools. [See also >>70])

Every other chan was doing better when 4chan was down.

96 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-25 16:37 ID:Heaven [Del]

4chan should get rid of /b/.

97 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-25 21:01 ID:Heaven [Del]

I don't believe it would work out. There would be a subsequent shitstorm with every /b/tard trolling every other board on the site. /b/ always responds to everything in the most idiotic ways. New reporting system? Time to post lots of CP to test it out. And whenever the board switches to and from forced anonymous, there's an uproar.

98 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-26 00:19 ID:Heaven [Del]

Truth. If you were a regular on any other /b/ board, you saw what happened when 4chan went down. "it's where we keep the retards" sums up 4chan /b/ pretty well.

That said, however, >>95 has a point. There were some points in time when it was actually a good thing for the slow boards. Sometimes even for a whole hour at a time...

There's another thread here somewhere about "4chan should split the /b/ board". I guess we sort of have an idea what would happen. And that some people there now actually know that there are other boards, so that maybe we're a little closer to that. (having multiple boards)

Or something. I'm tired...

99 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-26 04:30 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>98
Remember when the main content of /b/ was "witty" Photoshop threads? When Cock Mongler and Happy Negro were the first of these so called "memes"? When most /b/ posters were disgruntled ex-SA goons?

Nowadays /b/ is so fast and dumb the only things that remains are camwhores, shitty copypaste trolls and memes stolen from GameFAQs.

100 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-26 12:40 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>99
moot recently changed the flood limits on /b/, supposedly to slow the board down. Smart, but I still think he's going about it the wrong way, and making a second /b/ (and not linking the original one anymore from the front page, or even mentioning that this happened for that matter -- so that people who just cruise into 4chan and click "random" don't stumble on it and start being retarded) would be a much better solution. Oldschool /b/tards (who presumably have img.4chan.org/b/ bookmarked directly) would keep posting, and the newfags would get their own board to fag up.... but eventually the newfag board would shit out a gold nugget and it'd carry over to the "old" /b/ by those obsessive compulsive people who visit every board because they have nothing else to do.

We have been in contact with "Moot's fake lawyer" and are in close contact with the 4chan administration. We are working together to find a common solution to this immense dilemma.

We appreciate the cooperation of all the individuals associated with this website, and urge you to remain steadfast and patient while we work to expeditiously resolve this matter.

If there is one thing that our company has learned from this is trust 4chan, its members and its administration more than your own clients, as we have been deceived and mislead; however, after speaking with the 4chan administration are very happy with the way this is heading.

Glexia is prepared, due to the circumstances and members of the owners of diditforthelulz.com impersonation of chief officers in our company to cooperate with 4chan.

Did you forget /b/day?

Acknowledged separation could have prevented that, because an /i/ would give newfag invasionists a place seperate from /b/ to gay up.

Then we could have our /b/ back to the way it was, faceless and nameless instead of people trying to become famous for all the stupid publicity they brought /b/ in the first place.

So don't go to /b/ dumbass, theres only like 20 other boards on 4chan.

Anyway, this may actually last a long time, now it seems the 4chanstatus blog page is down, the last time I read it, moot said he was still fending off constand DDoS attacks.

If it comes to the worst thing possible, 4chan gets hosted somewhere else, moot still owns the domain name so it will most likely still be 4chan.org, just be directed to a different server.

The IRC logs are suitable proof that it's raidchan.

To everyone saying we need to raid or DDoS them back, STFU. This is not the time for stupid, script-kiddie tactics. These morons will get what's coming to them soon enough. Be patient, and stay out of the way while the big boys do their thing.

It was a bunch of bored script kiddies from raidchan trying to start a -chan war. The people who need to deal with this are doing so already. End of story.

Gaia doesn't do raids, and even if they did aren't capable of DDoS attacks. Your typical Gaia user doesn't know what a botnet is.

Looks to me like tactics, blamegame. I guess the several attempts were probably connected: first the shitpasta using the idiots to spam the site, later spambots. They use the persistent weakness of the site, for which we anyway need a lasting solution, I would say something like a soft version of r9k for all the boards.
I for once enjoy the free time to sort my images and get some sleep in the hours normal people get it. And wow, there is outside, raining though, shit.

once 4chan comes back up those who are guilty will surely face the true wrath of anon. it won't be pretty. in the past, whatever site tried to spam /b/ got shitflooded and killed. it just turned out that 4nont4lk was a bit stronger, and so survived the initial attack. but they shall fall too, eventually. anon won't miss the opportunity to once again show that trying to get attention to your site from /b/ will result in much more attention than you wanted.

That was pretty lame, though: just a bunch of poorly-coordinated, weak, individual DoS attempts. No botnets = not true DDoS.

>One of the IRC logs is over a thousand lines long. It could be fake, but I strongly doubt it.

Exactly: it's too elaborate to be fake. I didn't mean to imply that lies are never told on IRC, but merely that the conversations recorded in an authentic IRC log are pretty good evidence of what transpired.

i could easily make up something like that in about 2 hours.
just look at how many of those lines are the same thing repeated over and over again. and how many of them are just random people asking if raidchan is responsible for the ddos and being ignored. there's very little actual content.

i'm not saying this one is fake, i'm just saying that things like this are easy to fake, so an IRC log is not really any kind of reliable evidence at all.

I don't entirely disagree, except for the "easy" part. They're easy enough to fake, but not easy to fake well. That means that they usually are reasonably reliable evidence.

I might add, that, in this case, the skiddie from raidchan that was at the center of the thing (pacifico) has acknowledged (on youtube) the authenticity of the log at this point, though he persists in disputing his or raidchan's role in the attack (he claims, among other things, that their attack lasted for only ten minutes, that it didn't involve a botnet, and that they don't have capability for the 3-5Gb attack moot referred to).

>>254
It was back for quite a bit earlier, but now it's down again.

256 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-25 03:25 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>255,252
I've been ruminating over the logs a bit, and they certainly do look authentic on the first glance, but there's still something about them that's unsettling, particularly the timestamps.

pacifico is a teenager, and as most teenagers are, loves attention. While it's disputable whether he played a central role in the attack, he certainly wanted to be. Maybe he did launch some minor attacks, but I also doubt he has that big of a botnet -- raidchan as their name implies has attempted DDoSes on other sites in the past, but they've never managed much bandwidth.

I don't know. There's a lot of confusion right now, as there seems to be a consensus that this can't all be raidchan's doing - if they have this kind of capability, then they've been seriously holding out during previous raids. Nobody seems to know what's going on with certainty.

This is getting serious, though, because an outage of this duration is the type of thing that site owners usually involve the FBI over (and moot has done that before).

>>263
Normally, yes, but I suspect they are going to take pretty seriously anyone who has the capability of this level of DDoS attack, regardless of the target. 3-5Gb directed at one site is pretty big (and given that they are hitting multiple sites at once, their capacity is even greater).

Even though they find 4chan distasteful (and in point of fact, they mostly find it inane, rather than threatening), they have a legal obligation to uphold the law, and, at any rate, they are not likely to want to leave a threat on the loose who could conceivably turn its attention to more problematic targets. What do you think the political repercussions would be if some "legitimate" site got hit by the same perpetrator(s) down the road, only to find out the FBI could have done something earlier, but didn't "because they were only hitting -chan sites?"

In this era when the authorities take every incident of cyber-crime pretty seriously, these people are asking for a visit from the partyvan.

Anyone else think moot might be using the DDOS as an excuse to finally give up? Think about it, in the Time interview he's expressed his frustration over the difficulty in running the site with barely enough money to pay for it, and that stupid cat site making 3 million bucks while he gets nothing at all might be the final straw for him. Added with the incresingly negative publicity and how problematic /b/ has gotten over the past 2 years, and, well...maybe it's time to give up.

Considering all the shit that the site has gone through over the past 5 years, it's more surprising that it even lasted that long. Now that it's too popular, and subsequently too expensive to run, the DDOS is the perfect excuse to shut it down for good. The blame for the site's downfall gets shifted to someone else, while moot can simply sneak out the back door and no one will ever blame him. The end?

I doubt it. He had just announced that new features and changes to improve the site were coming soon. While some might argue that death would be the biggest improvement of all for 4chan, I don't think moot really feels that way. He actually has been very annoyed about the whole "moot hates 4chan," idea floating around.

If, OTOH, you think he might simply not be exerting maximum effort to get the site back up as quickly as possible - sort of using the opportunity to relax a bit - then you might be on to something. He certainly doesn't take the site as seriously as some of the users do (which I would argue is a sign that he is still sane).

Just saw that, myself.

I am glad, but mostly because it will help rid iichan of asshats. I'm not sure I'm going back to 4chan with the rest of the non-/b/ refugees. The first two days or so of waiting out the DDoS here (Tuesday and Wednesday), where a a few of us who were sporadic visitors to iichan anyhow were hanging out, but the masses hadn't found it yet, were pretty good. Then the throngs of uncouth children (either in actual age or merely in terms of mental maturity), showed up and turned the place to shit. Suddenly many of the boards were flooded with stale and/or stupid memes, trolling, namecalling, and off-topic image macros - all the things that are wrong with 4chan (and all the things, mind you, that are supposed to be banned, even on 4chan, outside of /b/). I'm sick and tired of that crap (I'll admit that there was a time when I was guilt of it, too; but I've outgrown it), so maybe I'll just stay here and hope that 4chan will contain it in the future. There's no denying that the traffic on iichan/wakachan/4-ch is lighter than I'd prefer, but the S/N ratio is such that iichan may still come out ahead of 4chan, when the quality of posts is considered.

>>300
I don't care what they do with /b/ as long as it gets back to its purpose of keeping the idiotic shit-posting contained. If it actually did its job, I'd probably be more enthused about the rest of 4chan.

4chan's down again. The main page loads VERY slowly and lacks stylesheets, feels like DDoS again. Yesterday it was back up, and soon afterwards AT spam filled /b/ once more.

Maybe moot got a bigger pipe when he moved datacenters, but that's hardly a solution to a DDoS.

323 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-30 00:15 ID:ZyIpkyNk [Del]

its intermittent for me. other people are confirming that the DDoS is back on though. looks like its either a smaller attack this time. it was unreachable a minute ago but now is working, albeit slooooow.

could be a prelude to a larger attack.

How the hell do I save the hosts file as something other than a text file? It wants to be a text file! I want it to be just a file!

Can't get it to work otherwise.

I think it is a bunch of crap if the attack is in any way related to some sort of vendetta or some sort of narrow minded cyber crusade in hopes of cultural purification (by any entity no matter the "influence" that it commands) because first of all, 4chan is not some stupid place where hackers and deuschbags meet up to plan the ruining of peoplez lives by the means of lulz, 4chan is a crossroads of internet culture, whether people like it or not. The boards, though not known for their highly thought provoking topics, represent a microcosm of a new age in technological sharing, an age in which experimentation is required for the defining of a new world ethics that is consistent with modern technology and information sharing. The 4cahn website is not some promoter of criminal activity and does not deserve in the slightest to be attacked by criminal dipshits, the filth of the world.

This thread should be permasaged. Every time 4chan experiences some minor little blackout this thread draws all the morons here. In fact, any thread created solely for 4chan related discussion should probably be dealt with in the same manner.

The race conflict had nothing at all to do with the Civil War or the South "rising" in the first place. Learn a bit of your southern USA history, lest you look like an ignoramus.

It's one thing when non-Americans, or even northerners, get this wrong, but people go around casually conflating the Confederacy with the ideals of the KKK just irritate me, not merely because it's wrong, but also because it's tremendously dumb.

If you were a slave-owner, you would not beat your workers. That would render them unable to do their work effectively. With very few exceptions by possibly some brain-damaged people, and many more examples of hearsay and conjecture ostensibly invented by radical supporters of black freedom long after the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, this was common understanding. (Yes, people on both sides of a controversial issue can be radical, and the concept that blacks should be fully equal with whites didn't enter the mainstream until decades later.)

Next time you want to post a stupidass off-topic comment in some random thread, learn some history about the subject first.

civil war was about abolishing slavery and the KKK.
stop making excuses for southern racists.
they beat the shit out of their slaves 'cause they could always fuck the women and breed some more.

stop sanitizing the redneck cunts.
slavery was and is wrong in the first place

(a) I can't believe anyone fell for that troll.

(b) As with any troll, there is some truth within it. The war was sort of about slavery and sort of not: the southern states believed that it should be the right of the individual state to decide whether to permit slavery or not, etc. etc. Natch, they were by and large the ones who were in support of slavery and the northern states were by and large the ones who were against it. But if you haven't studied the Civil War in depth, look up the Horace Greely letter and give it a bit of thought. It's a more complex situation than most people think.

(c) Some people did beat their slaves, sure. That's why there are a lot of historical references to the act of slave-beating, and there are even written works on how to beat them "correctly" so as not to permanently injure them. But! It was definitely not something that everyone did. Also, mulattos weren't worth as much.

(d) The KKK was only founded after the Civil War ended. Watch Gone With the Wind some time -- there's a very cleaned-up reference to the founding of the KKK at the end, when the blacks come into town. (Alternately, watch Birth of a Nation if you can find a copy of it. It's largely about the founding of the KKK as response to the South losing the war.)

By the way, I'm not neither a redneck nor an apologist. I'm from up north; for a couple years I had to live in the deep south, in the bible belt, and the amount of racist, redneck, bible-thumping, closed-minded radical-conservative bullshit I had to put up with has ensured that I will do everything in my power never to live there again. Too bad for the minority of people who were actually rational about any issue.
