4chan brought down by Distributed Denial of Service Attack (408)

> 4chan is down because of DDoS attacks, stemming from a bunch of guys that are angry that moot doesn't want to move #4chan to lulznet.

-Kirtaner (of 420chan).

No real reasons to distrust this information, really. Let's hope it didn't hit 'em too hard. I must say, with the traffic that 4chan get, it must have been one fucking tidal wave of a DDOS.

i feel like like someone froze The Nile, lifted it out of its river bed, and plunged it into the heart of pedobear

that is how i feel right nao

fortunately i went through this many times before so i know it'll be back, that kind of softens the blow

wait, if its dos, doesnt that mean everything is ok? i would be far more worried if someone snuck a baddie onboard

So this is how 4chan dies? After all those donate-or-die drives when it was in danger of running out of money, being watched by the fucking US governmet for "terrorism", and attacking Scientology, this is it? A bunch of nerdy faggots DDOS'ing 4chan is what brings it down? What the FUCK?

I can recall around 4-5 major downs, and countless minor ones.

Um, this isn't even the first time this has happened in the past year - "brb, soup" ring a bell? 4chan has a major outage every six months or so. IIRC, this is at least the fourth major outage just since /b/day, and they were even more common in the time before that.

Calm down. Quit being so melodramatic. This too shall pass.

NO. LURK THE FUCK MOAR.

At least read the damned thread, FFS.

It was a bunch of bored script kiddies from raidchan trying to start a -chan war. The people who need to deal with this are doing so already. End of story.

Gaia doesn't do raids, and even if they did aren't capable of DDoS attacks. Your typical Gaia user doesn't know what a botnet is.

Fuck, I hope /b/ dies. Sure, everyone else will feel the backlash but their Ritalin-addled "brains" will grow weary of it soon enough and gb2/gaia/myspace/etc.

is the ddos attack still running?

this reminds me about last year, same days (21 july - 24 july).
im still reading the IRC logs (yes im
curious, so what? >_< ) of those MOTHERF***ING BASTARDS and it looks like they're only tryin to have their 3 days of glory.
They're nothing more than bored kids, they're only pretending to be ANONSOLDIERS OF LIBERTY.
There is no real reason to DOS attack a TOTALLY FREE IMAGE BOARD, also birthplace of the most of the internet culture.
The only reason is FAGGOTRY.

>And don't forget 4nont4lk has been spamming 4chan's /b/ for a while too.

Looks to me like tactics, blamegame. I guess the several attempts were probably connected: first the shitpasta using the idiots to spam the site, later spambots. They use the persistent weakness of the site, for which we anyway need a lasting solution, I would say something like a soft version of r9k for all the boards.
I for once enjoy the free time to sort my images and get some sleep in the hours normal people get it. And wow, there is outside, raining though, shit.

how about an obligatory same person?

once 4chan comes back up those who are guilty will surely face the true wrath of anon. it won't be pretty. in the past, whatever site tried to spam /b/ got shitflooded and killed. it just turned out that 4nont4lk was a bit stronger, and so survived the initial attack. but they shall fall too, eventually. anon won't miss the opportunity to once again show that trying to get attention to your site from /b/ will result in much more attention than you wanted.

NO MORE GODDAMN RAIDS, FFS!

That's what caused this shit in the first place. People like you are why /b/ is such utter FAIL now. Raids don't deal with this kind of thing, they just lead to more raids, and the cycle never ends. I'll say it again, "LET THE BIG BOYS DEAL WITH IT." Instead of going off half-cocked, and hitting every possible perpetrator you can think of with your petty, little, half-assed raids; let the adepts, who actually know who they are after, and who know how to make it really hurt, do their thing. DDoS leads to serious RL business - it's not for kids.

Unlike you, I've been around the "big boys" enough, and know enough about them, to know that I'm not one of them. For starters, the big boys are not posting about responding with raids, and certainly not on iichan of all places. This is beyond raids, we're talking RL shit going down at this point. I know enough to stay out of the way of that, do you?

Read the thread. It's raidchan. IRC logs don't lie. Besides which, DDoS isn't YTMND or ebaums' style any more than it's Gaia's.

I found myself getting wound up by this then it hit me. I was getting wound up by something that has no physical entity. Beyond your computer screen, 4chan has pretty much zero relevance to anything whatsoever. When you are not at your computer then 4chan ceases to exist. So why get wound up by it?

That was pretty lame, though: just a bunch of poorly-coordinated, weak, individual DoS attempts. No botnets = not true DDoS.

>One of the IRC logs is over a thousand lines long. It could be fake, but I strongly doubt it.

Exactly: it's too elaborate to be fake. I didn't mean to imply that lies are never told on IRC, but merely that the conversations recorded in an authentic IRC log are pretty good evidence of what transpired.

>>246

>Read the log: it's not a matter of "a few lines."

this log?

i could easily make up something like that in about 2 hours.
just look at how many of those lines are the same thing repeated over and over again. and how many of them are just random people asking if raidchan is responsible for the ddos and being ignored. there's very little actual content.

The problem is that made-up (or even embellished) logs always come out looking composed. This one has details people trying to fake it always forget. It doesn't look composed.

253 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-25 01:51 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>252
never say always.
i'm not saying this one is fake, i'm just saying that things like this are easy to fake, so an IRC log is not really any kind of reliable evidence at all.

>>253
I don't entirely disagree, except for the "easy" part. They're easy enough to fake, but not easy to fake well. That means that they usually are reasonably reliable evidence.

I might add, that, in this case, the skiddie from raidchan that was at the center of the thing (pacifico) has acknowledged (on youtube) the authenticity of the log at this point, though he persists in disputing his or raidchan's role in the attack (he claims, among other things, that their attack lasted for only ten minutes, that it didn't involve a botnet, and that they don't have capability for the 3-5Gb attack moot referred to).

>>254
It was back for quite a bit earlier, but now it's down again.

256 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-25 03:25 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>255,252
I've been ruminating over the logs a bit, and they certainly do look authentic on the first glance, but there's still something about them that's unsettling, particularly the timestamps.

pacifico is a teenager, and as most teenagers are, loves attention. While it's disputable whether he played a central role in the attack, he certainly wanted to be. Maybe he did launch some minor attacks, but I also doubt he has that big of a botnet -- raidchan as their name implies has attempted DDoSes on other sites in the past, but they've never managed much bandwidth.

I don't know. There's a lot of confusion right now, as there seems to be a consensus that this can't all be raidchan's doing - if they have this kind of capability, then they've been seriously holding out during previous raids. Nobody seems to know what's going on with certainty.

This is getting serious, though, because an outage of this duration is the type of thing that site owners usually involve the FBI over (and moot has done that before).

>>263
Normally, yes, but I suspect they are going to take pretty seriously anyone who has the capability of this level of DDoS attack, regardless of the target. 3-5Gb directed at one site is pretty big (and given that they are hitting multiple sites at once, their capacity is even greater).

Even though they find 4chan distasteful (and in point of fact, they mostly find it inane, rather than threatening), they have a legal obligation to uphold the law, and, at any rate, they are not likely to want to leave a threat on the loose who could conceivably turn its attention to more problematic targets. What do you think the political repercussions would be if some "legitimate" site got hit by the same perpetrator(s) down the road, only to find out the FBI could have done something earlier, but didn't "because they were only hitting -chan sites?"

In this era when the authorities take every incident of cyber-crime pretty seriously, these people are asking for a visit from the partyvan.

Also, cocks.

Anyone else think moot might be using the DDOS as an excuse to finally give up? Think about it, in the Time interview he's expressed his frustration over the difficulty in running the site with barely enough money to pay for it, and that stupid cat site making 3 million bucks while he gets nothing at all might be the final straw for him. Added with the incresingly negative publicity and how problematic /b/ has gotten over the past 2 years, and, well...maybe it's time to give up.

Considering all the shit that the site has gone through over the past 5 years, it's more surprising that it even lasted that long. Now that it's too popular, and subsequently too expensive to run, the DDOS is the perfect excuse to shut it down for good. The blame for the site's downfall gets shifted to someone else, while moot can simply sneak out the back door and no one will ever blame him. The end?

I doubt it. He had just announced that new features and changes to improve the site were coming soon. While some might argue that death would be the biggest improvement of all for 4chan, I don't think moot really feels that way. He actually has been very annoyed about the whole "moot hates 4chan," idea floating around.

If, OTOH, you think he might simply not be exerting maximum effort to get the site back up as quickly as possible - sort of using the opportunity to relax a bit - then you might be on to something. He certainly doesn't take the site as seriously as some of the users do (which I would argue is a sign that he is still sane).

It was probably because Alan Moore found out that the kids wearing the V for Vendetta mask weren't fans of his book, just idiots from -chans.

Don't fuck with Alan Moore.

Several /k/ regulars are there. But unfortunately, without any gun noobs or liberal gun banners, there's practically nothing to talk about at all.
