Looks to me like tactics, blamegame. I guess the several attempts were probably connected: first the shitpasta using the idiots to spam the site, later spambots. They use the persistent weakness of the site, for which we anyway need a lasting solution, I would say something like a soft version of r9k for all the boards.
I for once enjoy the free time to sort my images and get some sleep in the hours normal people get it. And wow, there is outside, raining though, shit.
