1 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2005-11-15 14:59 ID:6TsVPKGD [Del]

This is the support thread for Xee. All kinds of questions and bugreports can be posted in here. This thread will also be linked from inside the program itself.

There is also a thread about Xee here: http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1122405906/
It contains more general discussion, and announcements of new versions and updates.

Just downloaded it on to iMacG5, OS 10.3.8
Program unexpectedly quits each time I try to open an image. What's up?

I've heard about it crashing on 10.3 from elsewhere too, but I have no way to test it... Could you post a crash report from ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Xee.crash.log?

great stuff! just some feature requests:

  • search subfolders
  • slide show option
  • fullscreen/orderless option

thanks a lot

Hello,
It's amost perfect for my needs - thanks !
But I really miss that image browsing can't be done just with "left" and "right".
Why on earth should I hit page up/down ? On my laptop, I need two hands for that !

Regards,

Pierre

Fullscreen support is planned, as and probably also subfolder searching (although that is a bit tricky to do right - you don't want the program to lock up while scanning your entire hard drive if you accidentially open the root). Not sure about slide show.

>>7

Left and right are used for scrolling. For laptops, there is a (sadly undocumented) alternate set of keys for browsing, "," and ".".

Quick bug report: when dragging into the folders drawer a folders that contains a "/" in its name, the "/" is replaced by a ":".

10 Name: Anonymous : 2005-12-01 04:23 ID:yF2vcB01 [Del]

I'd like to request 2 features:

- Last modified date in the statusbar, and an option to view files sorted by modified date
- Print

BTW, I'm the guy who reported problems with the sound notifications on copy/move, but the problem never happened again. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention correctly, sorry about that.

11 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2005-12-01 06:27 ID:TPNWUte8 [Del]

Different sorting methods is something I'd like to implement, but I haven't figured out the best way to do it yet. Ideally it should find the sorting order of the Finder window it was launched from and use that... I'll see what I can come up with.

Printing scares me, because I know just how hard it is to get printing right.

I have Sony DSC-W12 camera, and after taking pictures I rotate them in camera to vertical position. for some rason, Xee doesn't understand that and I have to rotate them agian in Xee. (Apple Preview shows all images correctly). Can you do something about it?
Secondly, after rotating JPG image, I want to keep it in that position, so I hit Command+S to save it. Strangely enough, Xee offers me to save JPG image as PNG inage. WHY??? For every image I have to choose JPG again. Can you move hte default format to Preferences, and offer the same format as currently opened image. If I have JPG image, please offer me to safe JPG, if I have PNG, then offer me to save as PNG, OK?

13 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2005-12-07 08:25 ID:TPNWUte8 [Del]

Your camera doesn't actually rotate the images. It just sets the orientation tag, and expects the viewer to rotate the image. Xee doesn't do this, an neither does any web browser I'm aware of. Preview, on the other hand, does. I find this behaviour confusing, since it tricks you into thinking the image will look right everywhere, when it won't.

Second, the rotation in Xee automatically saves the images. You should not save them again. Doing so will only degrade the image quality. The rotation is lossless, but saving images again as JPEG isn't.

All you need to do to rotate your images is to press Command-A. This will read the orientation tag, rotate the image appropriately, and write it to disk.

To expand on that a bit: The Save As command is only used to convert between file formats. That's why it won't pick the current file format, as that would make no sense. There's no reason to use Save As at any other time than when converting formats.

15 Name: Anonymous : 2005-12-07 12:05 ID:OGFm+ZjT [Del]

What if they want to save a copy? The Save As command is commonly used for that.

16 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2005-12-07 13:39 ID:Heaven [Del]

Then you'd be better off using the Copy File command.

One small remark. Today I went through 50+ images in Xee and wanted to sort them (mark useful ones), but... no tools for that. I know, I can switch to Finder and move or copy files or apply color label, but... Can you add color labeling in Xee? For example, press Command+1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 to apply red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink or gray color label.

(Current Command+1, 2, 3 could be assigned to <, > and Current <, > to LeftArrow, RightArrow.)

This way, I could go through the images and apply color labels, according to my taste. It would be good to display color label also over the image, maybe as a color circle somewhere in the corner?

How can I make Xee default to opening files at 100%?

20 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-01-05 06:11 ID:Heaven [Del]

View -> Automatic Zoom.

21 Name: Retep : 2006-02-18 13:13 ID:qffR15X7 [Del]

Xee is basically excellent, still some bugs.

  • drop .jpg icon on Xee icon sometimes will open, sometimes not
  • rotate: most of the time it says: "JPEG Transform Failed" (a few times it worked correctly)
  • Full screen mode: image is "garbled"; the same happens, when I try to manually resize the picture beyond a certain limit. The limit is slightly over 1800 pixels horizontally. (If I limit the screen size to 1200 X 1800 via system prefs the full screen mode works correctly.)
  • In full screen mode the fit on screen does not work if the original size is bigger than the screen.

(Xee v.1.2.1, PB G4 + 23' screen, OS X 10.4.4)

22 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-02-18 13:57 ID:6TsVPKGD [Del]

> drop .jpg icon on Xee icon sometimes will open, sometimes not

Can't reproduce that. Where are you dropping it? The Dock? Does Console.app list any errors? Does double-clicking on icons with Xee set as the default viewer work all the time?

> rotate: most of the time it says: "JPEG Transform Failed" (a few times it worked correctly)

Actually, are you sure these files you have are JPEGs and not just named such? Could you upload one that fails here?

> Full screen mode: image is "garbled"; the same happens, when I try to manually resize the picture beyond a certain limit. The limit is slightly over 1800 pixels horizontally. (If I limit the screen size to 1200 X 1800 via system prefs the full screen mode works correctly.)

What graphics card does your Mac have? Do other OpenGL programs work in full screen?

> In full screen mode the fit on screen does not work if the original size is bigger than the screen.

What exactly happens?

23 Name: kohlmannj : 2006-02-25 13:20 ID:3mF/TFMH [Del]

Still absolutely loving Xee, but I thought I'd throw in some more feature considerations:

+1 for an option to open in full screen mode by default. Using Xee with iPhoto, for example, is absolutely sublime, except that I usually want to view whatever image I double-click on as large as possible.

A corollary to that – full screen button/bezel-esque controls? That'd be sweet.

Last thing on this laundry list – addition of image movement controls (arrow keys) to the Keyboard preference. I have a Mighty Mouse, so I'd prefer to use the scroll ball to move around the image, for example. I can't do this right now since there aren't any modifiable "scroll image left/right/up/down" keyboard shortcut entries in Xee's prefs, but it seems that it'd be a fairly easy addition.

Thanks once again for your work, Sir Dag. Xee totally r0x0r5.

I can rotate this image fine. Are you sure the file isn't write protected (if you copied it in from a CD or something, it might be, or if you use several user accounts and the wrong one owns the file?)

26 Name: rino : 2006-04-01 15:54 ID:mCJ+nIUI [Del]

Wow. In deed there is something wrong with the permissions: the group was set to 'wheel'.
Although it doesn't make any sense (or am I being dumb? see below for file permissions), changing it to a group I belong to allows me to use the rotate function perfectly.

Is Xee not updated any longer? =/ This software is the BEST image viewer around for OS X. I wished it was updated so the following flaws would be fixed:

I'm trying to open Nikon Raw Format (NEF) files in Xee, but the program only shows a blurry, pixelated, really small picture that more seems like an icon than a picture. Is this a bug, since .NEF seems to be supported in the preferences.

Another question: Why not add the possibility to have autorotate on the pictures. I know you have heard this from a lot of users - and now even from me. =)

Best Regards,
Fredrik, Sweden

28 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-05-24 14:36 ID:6TsVPKGD [Del]

>>27

It would be updated, if I had a bit more spare time... Sadly, I don't at the moment. I'd also like that Intel Mac so I could develop a universal version finally. There'll be more, but it'll take some time.

When opening NEF files, do you get more than one frame? Try to see if the Go -> Next Frame and Go -> Previous Frame options are enabled. There is the possibility that an embedded thumbnail gets loaded as the first frame instead of the full picture.

Autorotate how? JPEGs with orientation data in the EXIF can be autorotated from the menus or the toolbar. Other formats don't support this, however, because I don't have code to losslessly rotate any other formats. This would most likely only apply to camera RAW formats, and I'm not even sure they CAN be losslessly rotated without converting them to a full RGB format, which would make the filesize explode.

If you mean automatically rotate images as they are loaded, I don't want to do that, because it tricks people into thinking their image is rotated that way already, when it isn't. If they then for instance upload it to the net, it would have the wrong orientation.

29 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-05-28 13:50 ID:6TsVPKGD [Del]

>>28

Update: I got a hold of a NEF file, and I notice the same problem. It will be fixed.

30 Name: Fredrik : 2006-06-01 04:32 ID:+lmWL2C/ [Del]

Oh, great! Thank you for your answers! I have also found at strange behavior when trying to step forward to the "next" image in the architecture; sometimes it won't go to the next picture, even though it's there and in the same format and size as the previous images. Any clue about this? =P

The image showed up when trying to load a .NEF picture is certainly the thumbnail, with the size 160 x 120 (from what i can recall). It does not help to step forward and backward. How soon do you think you'll have a fix for this? =)

Best regards,
Fredrik, Sweden

Sorry, can't give any definite date on that. I don't have much spare time at the moment to work on it. It's a quick fix, but there are a million other things I'd like to fix too before making another release.

Have you got any offers to sell your software yet, its THAT great.
(and if so - please dont) :)

Wow, that crash report seems really broken, or maybe it's just Rosetta being weird. Either way, does this happen for a specific image only, or for any image? Also, sometimes a crash can mess up QuickTime to the point that it will crash several times on launch afterwards, but then start working again later.

So, is this reproducible?

39 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-07-11 19:12 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>32

Actually, I had a look at the code just now and tried to get it to load a NEF file, and I discovered something weird: Various other OS X programs that use the standard image loading ALSO fail to load it! Preview, however, works. This is very mysterious.

40 Name: jaime : 2006-07-24 18:36 ID:PW2mazgZ [Del]

i really like this program, so much better then 'preview' for picture viewing. but i have one concern:

i can't rotate any pictures. how do i fix this or is it a bug?
(i checked the permissions and i can read and write)

thanks for your help

You can only rotate JPEG pictures, as it stands now.

42 Name: chumsdock : 2006-08-01 19:56 ID:WTWSoyLS [Del]

I'm using 2.0Alpha Universal.
It's so fast and I love surfing using arrow keys.
But the colors seems different from Preview
and when the picture is scaled down to fit, it has much more rough edges.
Is it possible to leave a option? I know it may take more time and resource.
If for fast surfing and exact viewing, a "re-Render" shortcut may be perfect.

I understand that you don't like autorotation because it could cause confusion. however i've got many pictuers (jpg) that aren't "really" rotated but i want to see them correctly anyway without having to manualy change everything. this could be a hidden option for people knowing what they're doing : )

otherwise it's a superb app

Hi,
really great program.
As an former Windowsian I still miss some features the Win-version of i.e. ACDSee has. This is for example "batch processing" of turninge Photos. means, that you can mark multiple photos in an overview of the folder content and then turn them all with just one klick.
Or batch renaming of filenames with the possibility to use exif-information as well as free text (wildcards for numbering etc. welcome...).
If this features would be in I would fall on my knees for you and your proggie.

Cheers Pafu

Do you have any haxies or similar installed?

71 Name: Anonymous : 2006-12-22 16:19 ID:lDAfvn2z [Del]

>>70
I dont really know what you mean with haxies, but i don't have anything that would mess with open windows/expose/dock.
Maybe its because im running a german version of osx.
I now know exactly what i have to do to open the prefpanel:

  1. Have some other program open
  2. Start Xee and cancel the open image window
  3. click on Xee -> Preferences (nothing happens)
  4. click/activate another open program
  5. click Xee on the dock. Now the Preferences window comes up.

The problem is just that i cant use the mouse. Xee even wont get the active program when i click on the open preferences window. The caption buttons of the preferences window wont works also (i have to restart xee to close the preferences window), but i still can drag the window by the titlebar.

I hope i could help a bit.

"%NSWindow" is definitely not something that should be there. The window is just a plain "NSWindow". I suspect there is some third-party app or hack that is interfering with things.

76 Name: Anonymous : 2006-12-23 14:33 ID:lDAfvn2z [Del]

Geez, why didnt i think of it before...
It was "simbl" in combination with "megazoom" (it allows to really maximize windows). I totally forgot about it.
Removed it and Xee works without problems now!
Im sorry if i wasted your time finding a bug that isnt there.
Anyway thanks!

You may want to report the bug to whoever made megazoom, though. That way some good may come of it.

Congratulations to this awesome program.
I believe in xee and I'm confident you'll be able to finally create an app that can rival Windows' IrfanView. Actually IrfanView is the only thing I miss from being a windows user. Xee is getting PRETTY close already tho.

Keep up the amazing work!

79 Name: Anonymous : 2007-01-23 01:33 ID:zY+hcONV [Del]

the old version 1.21 kept the settings for an image once applied (i.e. rotating 90 degree, jpeg), I assume by writing the exiftags. This is no longer possible with 2.0 beta 2.
I hope I didn't miss some obvious settings...

80 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-01-23 04:03 ID:TPNWUte8 [Del]

>>79

It did it by losslessly rotating the image data itself. 2.0 does it too but you have to pick "Save Losslessly..." after rotating, or press Command-S.

I've been thinking of adding an option to do this automatically, but I've not decided yet if that's a good idea or not.

81 Name: Anonymous : 2007-01-29 19:08 ID:+23SKjRf [Del]

Well, it seems that after I upgraded to Xee 2.0 final and The Unarchiver 1.4, I cannot view images inside .zip archives anymore.

Previous archives that worked with Xee 2.0Beta2 and The Unarchiver 1.3 simply display "Couldn't display file xxxx.zip" in the statusbar.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Not sure, I've had a similar problem but it went away by itself. If you put the old The Unarchiver in the trash, try emptying it.

Hello,

CONGRATULATIONS for the new verson! Thank you for keepin' it free, how nice of you :)
Also thank you for that loop option. Hopefully, new verson of Xee will scan subfolders too and you won't think of dumb pople who drag root folder on the icon, he he he :) Rest of us could use that option, thank you :) :) :)

I have Unarchiver installed too and Xee reads .cbz and .cbr archives without problem. Great idea! I have a lot of scanned comics and it would be helpfull if Xee could remember zoom of a previous image.

Xee works even faster than before, on my PPC machine. You probably had a lot of work with this version but it came out just great! Best regards!

Check the View -> Automatic Zoom menu, there is an option to remember the zoom level. (Although the "shrink to fit" option overrides it, so remember to disable that.)

86 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-02 19:08 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

None of the antialiasing options shows in higher zoom modes any differences.
The image looks always not atialiased.
(G5, 10.4.8, NVidia 6600 w/256MB)

87 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-03 04:55 ID:Heaven [Del]

Does "higher zoom modes" mean scaling the image up? Antialiasing is only used when scaling the image down.

88 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-03 08:48 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

That is sad.
I would need antialiasing mainly on upscaling,
and in high quality (no visible jaggies).
Maybe in the next version?

89 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-03 08:51 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

By the way, it would be nice, if XEE could work on nested folders as well.

90 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-03 10:02 ID:Heaven [Del]

Generally I don't think upscaling is ever a good idea. No matter how you do it, it will look ugly. The only times I want to actually scale up an image is when I want to look at the pixels, and if the image is smoothed this is impossible, which is why I haven't bothered implementing it. I might do it in the future, but it is not a priority.

Could you add information to the crop selection telling you what size the cropped size will be ?

You could just add the x & y sizes to the lower right corner of the crop tool ? or put some info in the bottom.

This would make xee even cooler

Pleas fix it !!

95 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-08 11:49 ID:Heaven [Del]

That is OS X picking Xee to open archives instead of some other program. You have to fix it yourself by choosing Get Info on an archive file, picking the right program, and then clicking "Change All". Or you can use RCDefaultApp to change which program opens archives.

98 Name: Gorm : 2007-02-08 22:04 ID:oAkCiAhJ [Del]

Not true. When i doubleclick on a .zip file, then stuffit opens. So ther must be some thing wrong in the installation of XSee 2. Un-installing it solves the problem.

99 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-10 11:33 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>98

No, Xee only tells OS X that it can open zip files. OS X itself chooses which program of those that say they can open them that actually opens it. You have to tell OS X which app you want to use by following the instructions in >>95. There is really nothing that can be done to change that.

100 Name: Gorm : 2007-02-14 09:28 ID:ie73A1tJ [Del]

But why does XSee try to open Zip files, when launched from VersionTracker ???
As I wrote before: Double Clikc on a .ZIP file it opens with StuffIt and NOT XSee.
Conclusion: Remove the unarchiver support in XSee.

Try it your selve, DL Version Tracker.

Because VersionTracker is broken. Report the bug to them.

Well, for now I have disablet auto unpacking from VersionTracker.

103 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-18 14:06 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>102

Well, the basic problem is that OS X's universal type system, which VersionTracker is probably using, is kind of broken. Ideally, VersionTracker should use it and work fine, but in practice you get these kinds of problems.

104 Name: Chris : 2007-02-21 11:48 ID:SCw/BHLQ [Del]

Thanks for writing Xee. Actually I most like it because it allows to turn off antialiasing, which is not possible in Preview.

Here are two wishes:

1) Please add a file LICENSE to the sources to make clear under which terms the source code can be used.

2) Were it possible to add an information field in the status footer line (maybe as an option in the preferences or in the toolbar), which displays the position (in image pixel coordinates col x row) of the mouse? When this mode is turned on, the mouse pointer probably shoud be set to an arrow.

Thanks.

No license, the code is public domain.

As for that feature, it seems a pretty niche feature, so I probably won't add it anytime soon, as I have a lot of other work to do anyway.

106 Name: Robert : 2007-02-27 06:49 ID:MuJz9NP/ [Del]

I suspect what some people were hoping for re: "antialiasing" was not so much upscaling as something like the Quartz "smooth images" effect with zoom in Universal Access. I often use ⌘⎇= to appreciate continuous-tone images that just don't have enough pixels. I don't know that it is possible to display such an effect in a resizable window.

107 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-27 10:36 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>106

That is exactly what upscaling is, and since the zoom effect in Universal Access is done on the graphics card hardware, just like Xee, it would look much the same.

Me, though, I turned that feature off immediately because I think it looks really horrible.

108 Name: xpab : 2007-03-27 00:31 ID:GSFUFTPO [Del]

Xee is a wonderful application. May thanks.

  • Bug/Enhancement : When you have choosen the "Fit to screen" option, if you rotate the image it "forget" the option and you have to manually reselect the "Fit to screen" to fit the image.
  • It would be nice if it could remember the rotation that have been aplied to images for the viewing session. Now if you rotate an image, go to the next and come back it has reverted to its original orientation.

Without the image you are trying to view, I can't do anything about that.

I seem to have a problem. To be honest I haven't read all 567 posts. Most of them I don't understand anyway.
I have a digital photo frame. I viewed all the pictures with Xee and deleted those I didn't want. They are on an SD card. None of them went to the trash. When I play the pictures, they all come up. If I go to the folder mode on the frame, it shows trashes and that is where the discarded pix live; but I am unable to see them on my Mac so that I can discard them permanently. How would I do this, or is it impossible?
Thanks for your response.

That's strange. Did you remove the card without ejecting it first or something?

To fix it, I'd suggest copying the working pictures off the card, reformatting it, and copying them back.

114 Name: bhcatlady : 2007-04-14 00:38 ID:f9IaQGBO [Del]

Thank you for your reply. No. I did NOT remove the camera BEFORE ejecting it. When I deleted the pictures, instead of going to my computer trash, they went to the card's trashes. The thing that really bothers me is I can't see the trashes on my computer nor the camera nor the frame when I plug it into the computer. I can see it only on the Digital Photo Frame. I checked from both the camera and the frame. I'll try to do what you suggested (groan) and see if that works. I reformat the card from my camera, right? I have forgotten. I don't have a card reader, but I guess I should get one.

I just downloaded Xee and have not tried much. But what i've tried was not so successfull.
Since I switched to Mac I wasn't able to find a program to open my 20000x20000x256 color png file I have around (a street map).
Xee allocates 2G of memory and my 1G Mac is swapping like hell :(
A very old version of ACDSee I always used on pre-Mac-time had no problems to open this file. Hope you can somehow fix Xee to use only the required 400MB of memory.

As there is no real support in OpenGL for 256-colour textures, it's not going to happen, sorry.

Unless someone can figure out a trick to do it.

Hmm, there is EXT_paletted_texture but I think my iMac doesn't support it.
Couldn't verify it, cause a simple program to query gl-Extensions cored with Bus error.

Perhaps you know what wrong with this?

#include <stdio.h>
#include <GL/gl.h>
int main( int argc, char**argv )
{
printf( "%s", glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS) );
}

Hi,

First of all, thank you very much for developping this great application!

For some reasons when opening images stored on an external USB harddrive which is FAT32-formatted, images load very slow, compared to images stored on any local drive.
However, I couldn't reproduce this thing on a USB thumbdrive which is fat formatted too

That sounds very strange. Do other programs read the images slowly at all? Is copying them off the drive fast or slow?

I've just discovered Xee and love it. But I have one little feature request - could you add an option to browse only associated file formats? No it tries to open my RAFs and fails every time.

Hello, thanks for develping Xee, with which I can rename my files from different remote computer (other than with viewer).

however, I can't save cropped files on neither the remote computer nor my local computer.
with apples preview app, I can crop even the remote, so I assume, I have the correct access rights.

anything I missed configuring in Xee?

I habe UnRARX on my Mac for extracting RAR Archives. But now i installed Xee and it wants to open all RAR Archives. I found no option to disable that and bring UnRarX back.
Even if i rightklick on a file and select open with - always open with UnRarX, Xee tries to open the Rar the next time...

Hi, just discovered Xee, great work!

Any chance you could support XPM format (both for reading and conversion from other formats)?

It's somewhere on the far too long list of stuff to implement some day.

Hi!

thank you for the fast Xee 2.0!

Bug: when rotating a jpeg, the color-format gets changed from YCbCr H2V1 to YCbCr H1V2.

Additionally, Xee crashes when I proceed to the next image while still saving a rotation.

Thank you,
Helmut

That's not a bug. It's pretty obvious the horizontal and vertical resolution should be swapped if you rotate the image, no?

I've been trying to figure out what causes the crashes, as I thought I fixed that already, but no luck so far.

Hello,
my colors in xee and preview are not the same, the colors in xee are much more boring and soft. is this why xee doesn´t take the color profiles of the pictures? it´s a bit bad, hope to change this in newer versions!

The keyboard shortcuts for the arrow keys appear to override proper navigation of the Open dialog. They really shouldn't be active while in that window.

135 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-07-23 12:23 ID:Heaven [Del]

I can't reproduce that. What are you doing?

136 Name: Anonymous : 2007-07-23 15:02 ID:ZkW/44vB [Del]

I set the left and right arrows to switch to previous and next images, rather than scroll the image (which I usually don't need since I size things to fit the window - even though it moves about). When in open/save dialogs, left/right arrow now do nothing.

Absolutely the BEST image viewer available on the Mac. It loads jpg's blindingly fast, 2.0 has very nice anti-aliasing and good color rendering, and a slideshow mode!

I use it to browse and show my digital photo's almost every day, and sent a donation to the author. He deserves it! If you use Xee as much as I do, please consider donating, it's well worth the money/effort.

After I rotate an image 90 degrees, the save losslessly button is in the file menu is dimmed. Why is that?

139 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-08-08 08:08 ID:Heaven [Del]

It shouldn't be. It's dimmed if there are no changes, or if it is impossible to save truly losslessly. Usually that only happens when you crop.

You can always Save As and pick "JPEG without recompressing", which is the same thing.

It would be nice to have option to disable sound effects, or if Xee would use OSX setting for "Play user interface sound effects"

Currently only way to disable sounds seem to be removing these files:
/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/dock/drag to trash.aif
/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/dock/poof item off dock.aif
System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/system/Volume Mount.aif

I really love this app!
Thanks so much.

I have a little color-problem with my .nef files.
This is a screenshot of Preview and Xee opening the same image.
As you can see in the status bar, I've set Xee to use RGB, with YUV I get similar results.
Is this a bug? Is there a way to fix it?

Love Xee. trying to get my wife to switch to Mac from Windoze and this is by far the best picture viewer replacement. The only thing she is really wanting is that "auto-save" option. she wants to click rotate and then go on to the next picture without having to do Command+S. I saw you were considering putting that back in, and I wanted to add my two cents.

146 Name: abey : 2007-10-08 05:22 ID:AKFnhV16 [Del]

Would be great to save the scroll position when viewing at 100%. Scenario is:

  • have a bunch of pix taken at low shutterspeed, I want to select the sharpest one
  • zoom 100%
  • scroll to say.... eyes (in case of a portrait)
  • go back & force between the other picture to find out which is the sharpest

having to scroll each time to the eyes 1) takes more time and 2) reduce your visual hability to compare sharpness precisely. would be a welcome feature to save the scroll position when browsing through images...

tia,
antoine

147 Name: abey : 2007-10-08 06:36 ID:AKFnhV16 [Del]

another improvement request: even if "Automatically orient image" is activated, please retain the rotation seting of each image if we manually rotate, such as the sequence:

  • rotate
  • next image
  • prev image

displays the image in the intended rotation, without requiring to save the jpeg (which I'd like to avoid).

148 Name: abey : 2007-10-08 06:41 ID:AKFnhV16 [Del]

final request: a mark/unmark feature in order to move/copy marked image in batch. this would ease, again, the process of comparing many version of the same image in order to keep the best, by allowing error ("select one, oh no i want this other one ---to late it's already copyed...")

with the three features above, this would make Xee the ultimate tool to pre-sort images after a shoot, before moving on to archive soft (iPhoto, etc.) and/or post-processing soft (Lightroom, Aperture, etc.). it is already a great piece of software I intend to use.

Best,
Antoine

Same problem here as well; this is very annoying. Even though none of the Archive file formats are checked in Xee, they still get hijacked. Even if I go to "Open With" and re-set them to always open with StuffIt Expander or whatever, control always gets reset to Xee.

Otherwise, great program so far. Keep it up! :)

Being investigated. It may be caused by a bug in Leopard. Either I'll have to implement a workaround, or it will be fixed in 10.5.1, whichever happens first.

Very happy with Xee as a browser. However here are some wishes (never satisfied !)

This the very first time that I see as many "infos" for any photo !

Is it possible to pick them out and use the infos to another file?

Or, better, I would like to add new items to fill myself with names of flowers (3 names at least), etc...
Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for a great app!

Is there a way to constrain cropping to preserve the aspect ratio of the original image? It would be great if I could just hold down shift, or option or something to get a crop area with the same aspect ratio as the original.

Thanks for this great app but in the last few days I encountered more and more crashes with simple JPEGs wich Preview can handle. Sometimes it crashes with a specific picture in a slideshow and the whole system freezes up for about 1-2 minutes. And as example, Xee starts and crashes with the attached image, wich is me and my system by the way ;) It's a MBP, first series, 2 Ghz, 1.5 GB Ram, 80GB HDD & Superdrive. I'm running 10.4.10. Hope you find the bug :)

Hey I'm the guy who was looking into the fullscreen problem on 10.5 (and the EXIF bug which might be what >>161 is talking about. It sounds similar). I decided to find a good solution to the fullscreen and I managed to get one and it works great so far.

I've got a patch against what's currently in SVN that includes the fullscreen fix and the EXIF "fix" (it fixes the problem that I see but I'm not sure it's the most graceful solution). There's a slight problem though that the current revision (r17) does not compile because it references some files and frameworks that are not there:

XeePhotoshopPICTLoader.h
XeeExperimentalImage1Saver.h
XADMaster
UniversalDetector

my patch doesn't include the removal of references to these files and frameworks that I needed to make it build (I'm assuming everything builds fine for you). If you want the patch with these extra changes, let me know.

Meanwhile I've got a Universal build you can try out here:
http://theidiotproject.com/Code/Xee+patch.app.zip
and the patch file here:
http://theidiotproject.com/Code/fullscreen+exif.patch

It's probably not a perfect solution to either problems, but they do work just fine in my tests. The EXIF one is particularly nasty because it can cause your whole machine to grind to a halt while it loops. If nothing else I hope they help.

164 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-12-07 18:52 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>163

Thanks! I already made the EXIF fix in my local version (slightly differently but same basic idea), but I didn't do anything abou the fullscreen thing yet. I'm a bit reluctant to use that fix because it seems a little kludgy and might not be needed soon anyway, but for a stop-gap it's a good enough idea.

Anyway, the version in trunk is in some half-finished state, and may or may not be a good idea to run normally. If you want something that works a bit more reliably, check out the older source for 2.0 from tags. XADMaster and UniversalDetector come from The Unarchiver, you can grab them from there if you want to build a proper version.

165 Name: samiamwork : 2007-12-12 11:15 ID:Sgv2QZcd [Del]

>>164

Yeah I admit, the fullscreen fix is a bit kludgy. Has anyone filed a bug on reparenting an NSOpenGLView? I can volunteer to file a report but it might be a week or so until I get around to making a minimized case.

I've also got a cleaner fix in mind, but I don't have high hopes for it.

Hi,

Here's #83 again. Just wanted to say cheers :)

Also I'll have to bug you with the "scan subfolders please" appeal/request again. I'm sure you're working hard on this magnificent program and if you could implement this one simple yet very very useful function Xee would be officially perfect :D

Thank you very much for your work,
B.

The Finder will already give you an index sheet, and I see no reason to spend much effort copying that functionality.

I've been dealing with some high res photos lately and Xee gets pretty choked up, sometimes taking up to 30 seconds or more to load a really big image (Using a newish MacBook). A couple other utilities don't have more than a couple seconds wait. Perhaps there is a way to optimize how Xee handles large pictures?

Just a small feature request: could we have some sort of checkbox to remember the level of rotation throughout images, kind of like "Remember zoom level?" For example, sometimes, I want to view all images rotated clockwise (say, when reading a comic with the laptop placed in the horizontal), but without actually modifying the files.

I tried emulating this behavior by pressing space(*) to go to the next image and then hitting Command-R to rotate the image clockwise, but that doesn't even work right, since Xee won't apply "Shrink to fit" again after rotating an image. I have to do Space, Command-R and Command-*, which is a bit too much to flip through comic pages.

(*) - I don't remember if space goes to the next image, I modified many keybinds to their IrfanView equivalents.

I might consider adding that, but file a bug on http://code.google.com/p/xee just to remind me.

You could get the same effect by rotating the screen in the screen settings, though, but that can be a bit slow.

does wakaba include that left frame navigation?

Just ran into the "couldn't display file" error mentioned in entry 81. The problem here was that the unarchiver variable in archiveForFile ended up with some unloadable path, most probably because I've tried to run the __MACOSX dir that appeared after unzipping it on the command line. The fix was to delete all unpacked versions of The Unarchiver except the one in /Applications. (Emptying the trash, as mentioned in the reply, is also a good idea.)

Having the source code rules. :-)
Thanks for the great apps.

The crop feature doesn't seem to be functioning correctly.

I position the frame over the exact area to retain, when I hit return or command-k the outer area gets cropped which is right. Then I do a Save As and choose JPEF with no recompressing plus I have to additionally choose Trim or Expand which is strange since cropping always trims something off. Anyway, if I choose Expand then the program adds a border (a few pixels wide) along the top and right side. Conversely, with Trim the program cuts away a border also on the top and right side. I can never get the exact area that I've framed with the crop tool. Is this a bug or did I do something wrong?

Am using OS 10.4.10 and Xee 2.0. Thanks for all the time you put into this program.

Lossless JPEG cropping can only crop along the edge of the blocks in the image, which are 8x8 or 16x16 pixels, depending. You have to set it to re-compress the image if you want to crop exactly, but you'll lose some quality.

203 Name: Anonymous : 2008-04-15 10:38 ID:Heaven [Del]

How is width stored in JPEG beyond the number of DCT blocks? I think you could crop by changing that.

204 Name: Martin : 2008-04-15 10:44 ID:VxTOPGas [Del]

Another vote for auto-loss less saving.

Perhaps instead of auto saving upon rotation, make it save when user navigates away from the image after doing the rotation. This will save some CPU cycles compared to saving it after each rotation. I.e. if the user rotates it CW 90 degrees 3 times to get it correctly orientated, if it were to auto save only when the user navigates away from the image, this will be better than doing it 3 times.

Also, is there a reason that rotated & saved pics show up in their original orientation if quickly navigated back to them? This can be a headache when you are rotating many images and not sure if you missed a few... I assume it has something to do with pre-caching.

Yeah, I just realized that... well, you can crop per-MCU on the top and left and crop per-pixel on the other two sides.

208 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-04-16 17:46 ID:Heaven [Del]

I do. Also, which edges can be cropped will vary depending on if you also rotate the image at the same time.

xee is a great app. i love it. i just have a quick question about cropping. (i understand about having to follow the edges of the 8x8px or 16x16px macroblocks, to maintain lossless saving), but could you briefly explain what the difference is, when cropping, between "trim" mode and "expand" mode? both appear to have almost the same results. intuitively, i would assume that cropping, by definition, would always trim, but there must be some difference between trim and expand, for it to be coded in as an option. thanks in advance.

It's the choice of what happens to any partial macroblocks that can't be cropped exactly. Trim removes them, and expand keeps them.

213 Name: nico : 2008-05-16 11:47 ID:8TiRN45+ [Del]

is there any plan on adding image re-sizing capabiliites to Xee in the future?
(to shrink down large images from their originals--say make a 3000x2000 pixel image 300x200 pixels. this seems most useful for preping files for web.)

>>204
If you accept this request, please consider not disabling the current behavior. Losing the ability to rotate quickly for display purposes (without the rotation being committed to the file or remembered by Xee) would break the app pretty badly for me.

Hi all!! Thank you so much for this good and useful application. I found one problem. I usually open pictures by Xee on fullscreen. When I leave fullscreen pressing Esc, proseed it in window. On the bottom are important informations about this picture, but at this moment is not size in percents shown correctly.

I really like your application, I am just wondering if it is possible to assign the trackpad-scroll function to be for moving the image around instead of to move back and forth between pictures. I tried messing with the keyboard assignment configuration, but I was never able to get it to work. I don't even know how to assign a shortcut to left and right scrolling, so that's out of the picture. However, up-and-down scrolling never worked for me, either.

Very nice app - I even blogged it.

I would like to make a few suggestions, if I may:

in the full-screen mode when you are going through the files and reach the end of the directory... nothing happens. You are just stuck confused without any indication that you have simply run out of files.

The user-friendly behavior would be:

1) Indicate that the end of the directory has been reached, and
2) give an option to either wrap around or go up (or down) a folder.

The perfect execution would overlay a nice dark directory tree on top of the last image and allow to either traverse it with arrow keys or just press "space" (or whatever is configured to go to the next image) to wrap around the current folder.

An extra hotkey to bring up this directory overlay wold be a bonus ;-)

This is the only thing (beside resizing) that stands between Xee and total perfection!

Many many thanks in advance.

~Andrey

It's already possible to turn on wrapping around.

However, I don't really think behaviour that does anything like that is very user friendly. I often just hold down the next button to get to the end, and if that made all kinds of junk pop up on top of my image that I had to get rid of, I would find that incredibly annoying.

It's basically surprising behaviour - the user expected the next image, but they got some kind of weird directory tree. It breaks the law of least astonishment. At the most, some kind of subtle indicator that you've reached the end is the most I'd think is appropriate.

Thanks for that great application, I love it!

But there is one thing that could be improved: When flipping through image files in full screen mode Xee first deletes the whole screen with the black background color (as it is black in my preferences) and then it paints the next picture on top of the cleared screen. This causes screen flickering when quickly browsing through a list of images.

This can be avoided if the new image is painted on top of the last image and the new borders are painted after the new image has been painted on screen. This means, that just the area between the image border and the screen border is then painted using the black background color.

Doing this you can easily flip through high-res images and it looks like a HDTV would be playing. Works great on fast machines.

I made this recommendation to the author of IrfanView about two years ago and he greatly enjoyed and implemented this feature. So using irfanview on a windows computer offers flickerfree browsing through images.

I would greatly appreciate if you could think about implementing such a flicker free browsing too.

Thank you. Best regards Oliver.

>>229

You are misunderstanding what is going on. Xee only paints black on the screen when it has not fully loaded the image yet. You can't draw what's not there. If you browse slowly enough that it has time to load each image in advance, there will be no black.

231 Name: OliK : 2008-09-28 23:47 ID:AyXknjXU [Del]

Try out IrfanView on the PC, there it works.
Alternatively you can use double buffering as an option.
Currently the screen flickers, and that is what distracts.
If you might want to get rid of this flickering you are welcome, if not, I don't care, there are other viewers which can flickerfree paint images.
I surely do understand, still flickering is distracting. That is probably what you did not understand. Thanks anyway.

232 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-09-29 12:49 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>231

No, see, that's a feature. Instead of having to wait for the entire image to load, you can see the part that has loaded so far It has nothing to do with double-buffering or painting. Painting is entirely flickerfree already. It's just that entire image has not been loaded yet if you browse quickly. The "fix" for this would require preventing you from browsing until the image is fully loaded.

Hi, I use Xing as my default image viewer and I love it, though I've been hoping for some updated features for a while now. Since I haven't seen an update for a long time, I was wondering if the app is being actively supported and developed.

Some enhancements that I would love to see include:

  • Slideshow transition effects (at minimum a "fade" option)
  • Keyboard shortcut for slideshow start/stop
  • Allow automatic slideshow stop when exiting full screen mode
  • Hide hand/pointer after timeout when in full screen mode
  • Pre-loading, buffering, and/or caching of image data to allow faster browsing without flicker-like effect (like in ACDSee)
  • Option to quit program on Escape (instead of just closing window)
  • Allow image rotation in Full Screen mode

Let me know when we might see an update for Xee.

Thanks!

> Keyboard shortcut for slideshow start/stop

You can change all the keyboard shortcuts already.

> Pre-loading, buffering, and/or caching of image data to allow faster browsing without flicker-like effect

This has been implemented since 1.0.

> Allow image rotation in Full Screen mode

Works fine with keyboard shortcuts or the right-click menu.

235 Name: freediverx : 2008-10-19 14:52 ID:smP1DlIv [Del]

Thanks for the quick reply.

Keyboard shortcut:
I didn't see an option for a slideshow shortcut the first time around, but I now found it listed under "Run". Thanks

Buffering:
I stand corrected. I was testing using a folder of very large 8MP images. But with more typical image sizes Xee keeps up nicely. I suppose I could request a setting to adjust the buffer size, but I suspect the amount of memory required to buffer 8MP images for fast browsing would be excessive.

Image Rotation in Full Screen mode:
For some reason this doesn't work for me. In normal window view, I can use Command-R or my custom Command-Arrow shortcuts to rotate images in both directions. But in full screen mode neither shortcut seems to have any effect. Any suggestions?

Xee uses OS X's raw image loading, so you have to wait until Apple updates it.

If Preview can open it and Xee can't, though, that's a bug and I'd like a copy of the image to test with.

241 Name: Anonymous : 2008-11-27 05:41 ID:zjbSPw+b [Del]

Two related bugs with the latest version:

  • When hitting backspace and triggering the "delete after confirmation" command, you can't cancel by pressing esc, which is expected from any dialog with a cancel button. It's annoying since accidental presses force you to use the mouse.

Which leads to the second issue:

  • I removed both keys bound to "Delete after confirmation" because I found myself hitting backspace accidentally all the time. But after a relaunch, these two keys are re-assigned to this command. This do not happen when I only remove one key - you need to remove both to reproduce the bug.

Also, file that other bug on the bug tracker so I'll remember to get around to looking at it.

Xee (659, 0xa000ed88) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug

followed by a crash
Note that the (size=#) is identical to the one in his post.
it seems to occur on precisely two images. Any other image loads perfectly fine.
I'd provide you with copies of them, but they are of a ahem sensitive nature.
I will see if there is any abnormality with them. Perhaps missing/incomplete/damaged EXIF? or was that bug taken care of?

Great program, thanks for making it free.

A few requests, and I'm not knocking your program vs. Preview it is just that Preview has a few features that are really convenient that would be great to see partnered up with the great stuff in Xee.

Could you please add:

  • a preference or option so that when you rotate a picture from horizontal to vertical it automatically 'zooms' out and fits the screen in vertical format? (This is what happens in Preview when you rotate). Currently I have to rotate, then click (or hot key) 'fit screen' to be able to see the whole photo. I looked for a preference setting for this but couldn't find one, perhaps I missed it?
  • a drawer on the side for the thumbs like Preview (I find this very handy personally)

A note on a possible bug? I tried using the 'Save As' option to save a rotated photo and compare it with the original re: resolution, file size etc. for interest sake. I named the photo xxxxxx.jpeg-2.

Xee then saved this as a .doc file. ? I don't know why. I can name duplicate files like this in Preview/Finder and Seashore and they are saved correctly as jpegs.

Thanks again for a great free program, very useful.

I noticed that when viewing some psd files which have saved alpha channels, the image is displayed using the first alpha channel as the transparency mask. That should not happen, in my opinion (although the Preview app behaves the same)...

Only one thing i´m missing, because I mostly have jpg and raw in my folders. Would it be possible to implement an option to show either "jpg AND nef" or "ONLY jpg" or "ONLY raw"? But xee can open the file on my MBP with 10.6.2 - my iMac with 10.5.8 cannot.
The only difference on my MBP is the RAW Software from Capture One (4 Std.) and Adobe (CS4) - which is installed. Both software solutions can read this filetype.

Hi,
I thought I had a problem with Finder (OSX 10.6.2) but now I think I found a problem with Xee.
I opened an image (shot with a Casio EX-Z12) that was shot on portrait but Finder (icon view, show icon preview) shows the preview on landscape (I think there is no rotation info on the image itself). Then I used Xee to rotate the image and save it losslessly. Now Finder shows the right frame (portrait) but the content isn't rotated (no problem opening the image with Xee). I even tried to save the rotated image as PNG and everything works fine.
(Here I attach just the Finder rendered previews).

I could not find any documentation, hence I ask here at the forums:

How can I crop and then losslessly save in Xee?

Xee is advertised with "Losslessy rotate and crop JPEG images".
When I rotate the image, Xee allows me to use "Menu > Save Losslessy".
But when I start the crop tool and apply it, Xee makes the "Save losslessly" menu inactive.

According to my understanding of JPEG, lossless crop&save would require me to cut along the "JPEG MCU block lines" and not through them, as the outer blocks would then need recoding.

I tried whether there is a modifier key, that helps me to snap the cropping lines along the block lines, but neither ALT, SHIFT or CMD helped.

"Save losslessly" is disabled when you crop, because that is obviously not really a "lossless" operation.

Use Save As and choose "JPEG, without recompressing".

What happens on a technical level if I choose "JPEG, without recompressing"?

And is my imagination of cutting along MCU block lines possible?

And if, could you imagine adopting your GUI, so that the cropping grid only allows cutting along the MCU block lines?

>>287

"JPEG, without recompressing" is just does the same lossless JPEG transforms as most lossless JPEG editing tools, transforming and reordering MCUs, and dropping those that are cropped out.

There's an option of whether to expand or contract the cropping area so it matches MCU borders. I did want it to be possible to see directly in the GUI how that would work, but I never figured out what the proper way to implement it would be, so I never got it done.

I have a suggestion of how to implement it in the GUI:

A) If one moves the crop frame normally, MCU lines are ignored.
B) If you move the crop frame with the ALT key pressed, the crop frame always snaps to the nearest MCU block line/edge.

Will you implement this? Would be great!

The lossless crop process as I imagine it, in detail:

1) Already the initial point shall be set directly at a MCU edge point. To achieve this already within the first step, the user holds down the ALT key and moves the mouse around without a mouse-button pressed until the cursor points at the desired snapping point. Note: The mouse movements do not drag a frame yet, they only set the initial point!
2) Then the user press-and-holds a mouse-button and remains holding the ALT key and moves the cursor to determine the second edge point and hence already determines the complete crop frame.
3) Possibly continue to move the other edges/lines until the cropping frame is completed as desired.
4) Possibly move the whole frame along the MCU-raster by holding the ALT key and click-and-holding the mouse cursor within the frame square, followed by moving the mouse and hence the frame around, until the mouse button is released.

Note: If setting the initial edge on the raster (1) cannot be realised, it is also possible to simply start the initial edge on an arbitrary point (likely no MCU edge), set the other snapped edge(s)/line(s) first (2) and in the last step correct the initial arbitrary point to a MCU edge!

Hi,
when I browse through pics with Xee, all of them appear washed out (colors look faded). If you open the same pic in Xee & Preview and compare the two, the difference is quite apparent.

Is there a way to make Xee display the pic in normal colors?? Otherwise it's pretty much useless for me.....

Great app! Just discovered it.

2 features would make it perfect for me. A thumbnail view and a tree view of my hard drive contents so I could navigate and click any folder and it would open that folder. Accessing it off the Open menu item is more cumbersome. One I selected a folder it would start showing thumbnails which I could scroll through (assuming enough) and then click one to view that image and then from that image continue forward or backward via your slide show functionality. Esc would take me back to the thumbnails. Perhaps for performance considerations, consider caching the thumbnailed images.

One other feature, right click on an image for a context menu with editor options and rotate options.

What I did: Cropping with ctrl k, make selection, enter, save as, using the same file name, jpeg without recompression, replace.

What happens: When I'm in windowed mode, it sometimes switches to full screen mode. When I'm in full screen mode, it sometimes switches to windowed mode. Also, sometimes the program crashes. I hit relaunch, and I see the file was properly cropped before the crash.

I create IPTC metadata in Lightroomn 2 anc check to see if it can be read outside LR by using Xee. (Yes, I AM paranoid). Everything is there EXCEPT "Date Created" under the "Image" subheading of IPTC. This is important since I have about 10k scanned images, and the EXIF data shown is the date scanned, not the date the photo was taken.

That is normal behaviour. It is a consequence of how JPEG works. The only way to get rid of it is to crop away a bit more than than that strip. You can tell Xee to do this by using "Save as..." with "JPEG (without recompressing)".

It's also great to be able to open Amiga IFF images! (pity I have to add .IFF extensions to filenames to view them, but I can't expect this to work like an Amiga program and parse the first few bytes of the file for the filetype regardless of extension.... )

It will actually read them even if they have the wrong name if you drop them on the icon. But scanning the file contents of every file in a directory would be too annoyingly slow, so you can't browse a directory of files unless they have the right extensions.

Unfortunately, I cannot use Xee on Lion 10.7.2 (MBP early 2011) as it regularly causes kernel panic in video card driver.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Open Xee version 2.2;
  2. select View -> Always Open In Full Screen (not sure this step is required);
  3. browse in Finder any JPEG/TIFF image and open it with Xee, image opens in full screen;
  4. press Esc to close the image.

Repeat steps 3-4 until kernel panic on step 4. It seems that large TIFF images (16 Mpix, 16 bits/channel) are more likely to reproduce this issue.

Model: MacBookPro8,1, BootROM MBP81.0047.B1E, 2 processors, Intel Core i7, 2.7 GHz, 8 GB, SMC 1.68f96

Is anyone still working on Xee? If so I have on request, when loading canon raw files .CR2, there is a very noticeable delay and black screen when switching from one photo to the next. I don't know if anything can be done to load the files faster but AcdSee 2 for MAC does a neat thing, it instantly loads the low res embedded jpg preview while you wait one second for the CR2 file to load. it may seem insignificant but it makes a huge difference and is much more pleasing to use as you don't have this one second of -black- between photos when cycling through a folder or gallery.

If you could implement this it would be fantastic! its equivalent to the iphone loading a screenshot of an app for a second while the app loads rather than a black loading screen. thanks!

I would like it if there was an option to zoom the image so it fits a screen wide, not just tall (so you could scroll down to see the rest). It would be better for reading images that are pages. Right now, the program just can't do that at all and I wish it could.

I should say though, other than that, and maybe that it doesn't notify when there's updates, it seems to me the app's pretty darn close to perfect.

Hi, I just began using Xee after upgrading from Mac Panther (10.3.9) to a newer system that demands OS X native apps as the default. I was using the old PictureViewer app on the old system because of its quickness and sleekness, and after trying out many OS X image-viewing equivalents, I decided Xee was the one to go with.

My only problem (so far anyway) is when I use my VueScan app to scan an image, Xee butts in and opens the image up (even though I have the "viewer" pref in the VueScan app set to "Photoshop"). On my old system, Photoshop would open the scanned image up (even though I had .jpg's set to open in PictureViewer by default).

I'm just wondering if there's some way to get Xee to open up .jpg's normally, but leave them alone when I'm scanning and wanting images to open in Photoshop instead.

There is a workaround -- I just changed the save folder in Vuescan to the Desktop and then open them up in Photoshop, but that involves an extra step.

Sorry for this long message and I'll still be using Xee even if I have to live with this minor inconvenience.

It is a side-effect of lossless JPEG rotations. If the size is not a multiple of the MCU size (usually 16x16 or 8x8), some edge blocks can't be transformed. They are retained so you don't lose data, though, and will be restored if you rotate back.

Sounds like an OS X bug, really, it should not even be possible for any program to hang the system like that.

I just got the Cnet info of the new upgrade. Nowhere does it say that you have just instigated to PAY program. I know it's not much money.....but just wondering WHY and why no where does it state that Xtee is now a pay program.

Hi

Many thanks for Xee, a nice application. But - how do change the zoom increment? I can't find it anywhere. I like 0.1 zoom increment, the default is too high.

Use touch zooming, or rebind the keys to use the fine zoom commands instead.

When I open an image by double clicking it in Finder, then a little flash of the image appears on the screen right after the image has been loaded. I was wondering if it's possible to turn this off in the preference file?

How do you use multigestures to rotate? The main reason I bought Xee was because I was hoping that I could use gestures to partially rotate an image along the 360 degree axis (as opposed to only by 90 degree increments). Is this possible?

great application
have one little problem ...
MAC OS 10.6.8 Xee 2.2
Whenever a file is opened the following appears in the Console Message Log:

12/06/15 6:54:32 PM Xee[2943] Exception during initial loading of "(null)" (XeeJPEGImage): libjpeg error: Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xff 0xd9

But the image loads OK.
Have done a Hex Dump of the image files and they all start with 0xff 0xd8

is this something that can be resolved? Thanks

1) Would be nice if there was a thumbnail view available to jump quickly to the wanted pictures (if many pictures in the folder).

2) Also a sorting order would nice (scan through images by date, name, etc...)

3) Would be nice if we could navigate folders directly from Xee (like go to parent or next folder) without having to go each time through the menu and make file/open

There is already a sorting order option.

after i rotated a jpeg in xee3 v3.5.2 (43), the corrected orientation does not show in quickview and also not in preview. the saving option in the file menu is greyed-out. i havent used xee in a long time (auto-rotation used to be a blessing)... if i remember right, xee used to save the orientation to the image without me having to losslessly save the image again...

may be there is something i am missing?!? greetings from GER!

Hey guys,
it would be amazing, if I could use the right and left arrow keys when I am renaming files, to navigate within the file name. Then I wouldn't have to switch from keyboard to trackpad.
Cheers,
Grit
