This is the support thread for Xee. All kinds of questions and bugreports can be posted in here. This thread will also be linked from inside the program itself.
There is also a thread about Xee here: http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1122405906/
It contains more general discussion, and announcements of new versions and updates.
Please add the option to use an image as a wallpaper from inside xee.
Hi,
when I browse through pics with Xee, all of them appear washed out (colors look faded). If you open the same pic in Xee & Preview and compare the two, the difference is quite apparent.
Is there a way to make Xee display the pic in normal colors?? Otherwise it's pretty much useless for me.....
Great app! Just discovered it.
2 features would make it perfect for me. A thumbnail view and a tree view of my hard drive contents so I could navigate and click any folder and it would open that folder. Accessing it off the Open menu item is more cumbersome. One I selected a folder it would start showing thumbnails which I could scroll through (assuming enough) and then click one to view that image and then from that image continue forward or backward via your slide show functionality. Esc would take me back to the thumbnails. Perhaps for performance considerations, consider caching the thumbnailed images.
One other feature, right click on an image for a context menu with editor options and rotate options.

Color profile support is hard to do in OpenGL. Here are two posts from the developer on the topic:

What I did: Cropping with ctrl k, make selection, enter, save as, using the same file name, jpeg without recompression, replace.
What happens: When I'm in windowed mode, it sometimes switches to full screen mode. When I'm in full screen mode, it sometimes switches to windowed mode. Also, sometimes the program crashes. I hit relaunch, and I see the file was properly cropped before the crash.
Xee version 2.1.1 on OS X 10.5.
I can't open my iPhotos in this? How do I navigate to the folder with iPhotos in it? I can navigate to the iPhoto app but it's greyed out, and so I can't right-click to get to package contents & view the photos. It must be something simple I am overlooking. Can you help? thanks!
I create IPTC metadata in Lightroomn 2 anc check to see if it can be read outside LR by using Xee. (Yes, I AM paranoid). Everything is there EXCEPT "Date Created" under the "Image" subheading of IPTC. This is important since I have about 10k scanned images, and the EXIF data shown is the date scanned, not the date the photo was taken.
Xee version 2.1.1 on OS X 10.6.4
Sounds like a straightforward bug. File an issue on the bug tracker, and include an image that shows the problem, and I'll try to get around to fixing it.
i would like to report a bug
MAC OS 10.5.8 - Xee 2.1.1
after a mirror horizontal operation and file saving
a thin strip appears on the right side of the picture

That is normal behaviour. It is a consequence of how JPEG works. The only way to get rid of it is to crop away a bit more than than that strip. You can tell Xee to do this by using "Save as..." with "JPEG (without recompressing)".
OK thx, that's what i've done !
sorry for the inconvenience ;)

Why do certain GIF and PNG images have this white background with gray "squares," while Preview, for example, will display the same image nicely without this white background?
>>315
The squares are there to indicate to you that it's transparent and not just an image that has a white background.
Can someone tell me how can I disable that when I touch the scroll button on my mouse, it will either move to the next or previous pics?
It's really annoying so I'd like to completely disable the middle mouse button in Xee.
MAC OS X 10.6.8 with Xee 2.2:
Feature request: "Crop & Save current view"
Use case: Picture is viewed in Fullscreen mode, Trackpad is used to zoom to important area of the picture, keyboard shortcut is pressed which will crop the picture as it is seen on the screen (without the need to define a crop selection!), picture is automatically saved to the same filename without recompression. Let me know what I should donate, I really need this feature.
Is it possible to use Lightroom 3 as an editor from Xee? When I click on "open in editor" Lightroom doesn't appear in the list of available editors?
I think it would be a good idea to use for a image browsing Lion's features like "swipe between pages" for magic mouse and trackpad, otherwise, work with these devices in Xee is not usefull.
Two questions:
I run on 10.7.2. and
a) I cant get the multigestures to run (why?)
b) I since 2.2. I cant close a Fulscreenwindows with the ESC button, thats really annoying. Anybody can help?
Thank you very much!

Hello,
I cannot tell if a jpeg is 'progressive' or 'baseline' from the 'image info', do I look for the wrong place or Xee does not have this function? If Xee lacks this function, could you consider to add this function?
Thank you!
I loooooove xee! Perfect replacement of ACDSee for me. No database, no import export, just browsing my holiday snapshots folders. I love it.
Any plans to include small movie clips in slideshow?
rock on pls!
I just want to tell you how much I love Xee. It's the best picture viewer I've ever used - and I've used picture viewers on nearly 25 different operating systems.
It's also great to be able to open Amiga IFF images! (pity I have to add .IFF extensions to filenames to view them, but I can't expect this to work like an Amiga program and parse the first few bytes of the file for the filetype regardless of extension.... )
Lion broke preview, about which I have grumbled at Apple. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3472948
Xee fixed it — thank you.
It will actually read them even if they have the wrong name if you drop them on the icon. But scanning the file contents of every file in a directory would be too annoyingly slow, so you can't browse a directory of files unless they have the right extensions.
Ah, you're right! Awesome. That'll come in handy because I've got thousands of Amiga images with useful self-made extensions I don't want to change.
I love your Unarchiver program too. Thanks very much!
Anyway of adding a rating/label/file lock to this so you can somehow mark images?
Unfortunately, I cannot use Xee on Lion 10.7.2 (MBP early 2011) as it regularly causes kernel panic in video card driver.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
Repeat steps 3-4 until kernel panic on step 4. It seems that large TIFF images (16 Mpix, 16 bits/channel) are more likely to reproduce this issue.
Configuration:
Model: MacBookPro8,1, BootROM MBP81.0047.B1E, 2 processors, Intel Core i7, 2.7 GHz, 8 GB, SMC 1.68f96
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000, Intel HD Graphics 3000, Built-In, 512 MB
Does library open any of Adobe illustrator, PSD or InDesign file formats?
I love the Xee app, just one annoying bug. I run Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 and just downloaded the Xee app.
Now to the bug. I can´t set Xee to be the default app for images, I know the procedure for making an app a default one for specific filetypes. It just won't stuck as a default app for images.
Please help, otherwise a great app.

I'd like to add my wish for the ability to display pictures in nested folders. For example, if the files are arranged in folders like:
foo
bar
1.jpg
2.jpg
baz
3.jpg
4.jpg
Then pointing Xee at the folder foo would cause Xee to display:
1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, 4.jpg
Great piece of soft !!!
GIVE US LABELS ! GIVE US LABELS ON SHORTCUTS !
shortcut orginal config if weird. arrows are for navigating, not cmd arrow !
Any way to save config ?
again :
GIVE US LABELS ! GIVE US LABELS ON SHORTCUTS PLEASE !
and I'll definitively adopt Xee ! because preview is a pain !
And for christmas, I'll ask for folder batch 600x800 resize with image list on right to handle them.
Xee could be the mac version of the excellent Irfanview.
Keep up ! Excellent work and spirit !
And quit on close, too many icons in the dock.
It would be fantastic if you offer an option to quit when closing the last window. As one user said, we already have too many icons in our dock :)
Please add support for the new Retina screens.
Sorry, deleted one too many posts by mistake.
Under what license are you making Xee available? Thanks
It's basically public domain. If that doesn't work in your jurisdiction, consider it BSD licensed.
Is anyone still working on Xee? If so I have on request, when loading canon raw files .CR2, there is a very noticeable delay and black screen when switching from one photo to the next. I don't know if anything can be done to load the files faster but AcdSee 2 for MAC does a neat thing, it instantly loads the low res embedded jpg preview while you wait one second for the CR2 file to load. it may seem insignificant but it makes a huge difference and is much more pleasing to use as you don't have this one second of -black- between photos when cycling through a folder or gallery.
If you could implement this it would be fantastic! its equivalent to the iphone loading a screenshot of an app for a second while the app loads rather than a black loading screen. thanks!
I have been working on and off on a rewrite that should become version 3.0 at some point in the future. Not sure when, though.
I'll keep that one in mind, though, it might be a good idea. Especially if I can think of a way to scale the thumbnail up that is not completely ugly.
I have a suggestion. If the picture I closed is the last one, just quit xee.
I think this is a best viewer. I have used it for a long time. Recently I updated to Mountain Lion and now I can't save RAW file as JPEG. How can I fix this? In post 275 you wrote that Xee uses the OS X ImageIO framework to load raw files. Maybe I can take some libraries from Lion and use them?
I would like it if there was an option to zoom the image so it fits a screen wide, not just tall (so you could scroll down to see the rest). It would be better for reading images that are pages. Right now, the program just can't do that at all and I wish it could.
I should say though, other than that, and maybe that it doesn't notify when there's updates, it seems to me the app's pretty darn close to perfect.
Recently i have an problem regarding sorting of images.. the option in advanced tab in preference "DEFAULT SORT ORDER-SAME AS IN THE FINDER" is not working at all. All pictures are sorted by name only
Hi, I just began using Xee after upgrading from Mac Panther (10.3.9) to a newer system that demands OS X native apps as the default. I was using the old PictureViewer app on the old system because of its quickness and sleekness, and after trying out many OS X image-viewing equivalents, I decided Xee was the one to go with.
My only problem (so far anyway) is when I use my VueScan app to scan an image, Xee butts in and opens the image up (even though I have the "viewer" pref in the VueScan app set to "Photoshop"). On my old system, Photoshop would open the scanned image up (even though I had .jpg's set to open in PictureViewer by default).
I'm just wondering if there's some way to get Xee to open up .jpg's normally, but leave them alone when I'm scanning and wanting images to open in Photoshop instead.
There is a workaround -- I just changed the save folder in Vuescan to the Desktop and then open them up in Photoshop, but that involves an extra step.
Sorry for this long message and I'll still be using Xee even if I have to live with this minor inconvenience.
Hi I'm experiencing the same problem as post 295, move/copy file seems to be greyed out. Could anyone help? Very new to Xee but would like to move/copy very much,
Thanks,
I'd like to be able to view some additional EXIF data in the status bar, specifically the focal length, aperture, and shutter speed. Thank you.
How about an option to automatically zoom to fit when you load a new image, especially during a slideshow.
It would also be nice if the left and right arrow keys could be use to navigate through the images.
I did Rotate Counter-Clockwise and Saved Losslessly.
When I reopened the image, a strip of 35 pixels from what became the top of the image were now at the bottom of the image. It didn't happen on another image I tried it with though, and it didn't happen until I clicked 'Save Losslessly'.
Is this a bug? Does it depend on image dimensions?
I'm on OSX 10.6.8
Thanks!
It is a side-effect of lossless JPEG rotations. If the size is not a multiple of the MCU size (usually 16x16 or 8x8), some edge blocks can't be transformed. They are retained so you don't lose data, though, and will be restored if you rotate back.
Use File -> Move to... or Copy to... to open the list of destinations, then you can either pick a destination and it will be automatically added, or you can drag folders to the list.
This is driving me nuts.
When moving through images quickly or browsing through large images of 1.5mb or larger, the app crashes..
Am I just asking to much for this app?
Running OSX 10.8.4, 4 gig RAM.
Which version, and crashes how? Can you post a crash log?
My recent update to XEE 3 is also crashing my MBP. The earlier versions worked just fine. As soon as I open an image, it freezes while loading or it freezes right after it loads. I have to restart the computer each time. Unable to create crash log.
Running: OSX 10.7.5 8gig
Unable to post
Can you check Console.app to see if there is some kind of kernel crash log?
When I try to open a zip file by right click -> open with -> xee3 it always hangs and I have to restart the system. In the log I get the following every 5 seconds

Sounds like an OS X bug, really, it should not even be possible for any program to hang the system like that.
I just got the Cnet info of the new upgrade. Nowhere does it say that you have just instigated to PAY program. I know it's not much money.....but just wondering WHY and why no where does it state that Xtee is now a pay program.
Hi
Many thanks for Xee, a nice application. But - how do change the zoom increment? I can't find it anywhere. I like 0.1 zoom increment, the default is too high.
Use touch zooming, or rebind the keys to use the fine zoom commands instead.
When I open an image by double clicking it in Finder, then a little flash of the image appears on the screen right after the image has been loaded. I was wondering if it's possible to turn this off in the preference file?
How do you use multigestures to rotate? The main reason I bought Xee was because I was hoping that I could use gestures to partially rotate an image along the 360 degree axis (as opposed to only by 90 degree increments). Is this possible?
great application
have one little problem ...
MAC OS 10.6.8 Xee 2.2
Whenever a file is opened the following appears in the Console Message Log:
12/06/15 6:54:32 PM Xee[2943] Exception during initial loading of "(null)" (XeeJPEGImage): libjpeg error: Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xff 0xd9
But the image loads OK.
Have done a Hex Dump of the image files and they all start with 0xff 0xd8
is this something that can be resolved? Thanks
1) Would be nice if there was a thumbnail view available to jump quickly to the wanted pictures (if many pictures in the folder).
2) Also a sorting order would nice (scan through images by date, name, etc...)
3) Would be nice if we could navigate folders directly from Xee (like go to parent or next folder) without having to go each time through the menu and make file/open
There is already a sorting order option.
after i rotated a jpeg in xee3 v3.5.2 (43), the corrected orientation does not show in quickview and also not in preview. the saving option in the file menu is greyed-out. i havent used xee in a long time (auto-rotation used to be a blessing)... if i remember right, xee used to save the orientation to the image without me having to losslessly save the image again...
may be there is something i am missing?!? greetings from GER!
Hey guys,
it would be amazing, if I could use the right and left arrow keys when I am renaming files, to navigate within the file name. Then I wouldn't have to switch from keyboard to trackpad.
Cheers,
Grit
