This is the support thread for Xee. All kinds of questions and bugreports can be posted in here. This thread will also be linked from inside the program itself.

There is also a thread about Xee here: http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1122405906/
It contains more general discussion, and announcements of new versions and updates.

Actually, I had a look at the code just now and tried to get it to load a NEF file, and I discovered something weird: Various other OS X programs that use the standard image loading ALSO fail to load it! Preview, however, works. This is very mysterious.

40 Name: jaime : 2006-07-24 18:36 ID:PW2mazgZ [Del]

i really like this program, so much better then 'preview' for picture viewing. but i have one concern:

i can't rotate any pictures. how do i fix this or is it a bug?
(i checked the permissions and i can read and write)

thanks for your help

>>40

You can only rotate JPEG pictures, as it stands now.

42 Name: chumsdock : 2006-08-01 19:56 ID:WTWSoyLS [Del]

I'm using 2.0Alpha Universal.
It's so fast and I love surfing using arrow keys.
But the colors seems different from Preview
and when the picture is scaled down to fit, it has much more rough edges.
Is it possible to leave a option? I know it may take more time and resource.
If for fast surfing and exact viewing, a "re-Render" shortcut may be perfect.

I am actually working on better scaling right now, so hopefully that will be fixed, while still being fairly fast. We shall see how it works out.

I love Xee, it's a fantastic picture viewing program. I do have one feature request though...

Zoom Lock - Once a zoom level is set, the ability to lock it so that the zoom level is the same until you change it yourself or turn off the feature.

47 Name: elan : 2006-08-20 01:24 ID:TxSgbbM1 [Del]

Great program...it didn't display my .cr2 Canon 20D RAW files correctly, though, it just showed random color dots.

48 Name: Volt : 2006-08-20 16:56 ID:V6cl5bKf [Del]

Xee is excellent, but I just have one request. I'd like to be able to scroll large images using a scrollwheel/scrollball. Right now, it changes the image. Could you make the scrollwheel behaviour customizable?

49 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-08-20 19:20 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>47

Which version? Did you try the 2.0 alpha version to see if that will show it correctly?

>>48

I'll consider it.

Could you add a toggle for cursor visibility in fullscreen? I just throw it in the corner and use the keyboard, anyway.

51 Name: stupidor : 2006-08-22 09:14 ID:SVICUug1 [Del]

>>28

I understand that you don't like autorotation because it could cause confusion. however i've got many pictuers (jpg) that aren't "really" rotated but i want to see them correctly anyway without having to manualy change everything. this could be a hidden option for people knowing what they're doing : )

otherwise it's a superb app

Hi,
really great program.
As an former Windowsian I still miss some features the Win-version of i.e. ACDSee has. This is for example "batch processing" of turninge Photos. means, that you can mark multiple photos in an overview of the folder content and then turn them all with just one klick.
Or batch renaming of filenames with the possibility to use exif-information as well as free text (wildcards for numbering etc. welcome...).
If this features would be in I would fall on my knees for you and your proggie.

Cheers Pafu

Batch processing would really be useful, but I won't have time to implement that anytime soon. Sorry, it'd be a lot of work.

Do you have any haxies or similar installed?

>>70
I dont really know what you mean with haxies, but i don't have anything that would mess with open windows/expose/dock.
Maybe its because im running a german version of osx.
I now know exactly what i have to do to open the prefpanel:

  1. Have some other program open
  2. Start Xee and cancel the open image window
  3. click on Xee -> Preferences (nothing happens)
  4. click/activate another open program
  5. click Xee on the dock. Now the Preferences window comes up.

The problem is just that i cant use the mouse. Xee even wont get the active program when i click on the open preferences window. The caption buttons of the preferences window wont works also (i have to restart xee to close the preferences window), but i still can drag the window by the titlebar.

I hope i could help a bit.

"%NSWindow" is definitely not something that should be there. The window is just a plain "NSWindow". I suspect there is some third-party app or hack that is interfering with things.

76 Name: Anonymous : 2006-12-23 14:33 ID:lDAfvn2z [Del]

Geez, why didnt i think of it before...
It was "simbl" in combination with "megazoom" (it allows to really maximize windows). I totally forgot about it.
Removed it and Xee works without problems now!

You may want to report the bug to whoever made megazoom, though. That way some good may come of it.

Congratulations to this awesome program.
I believe in xee and I'm confident you'll be able to finally create an app that can rival Windows' IrfanView. Actually IrfanView is the only thing I miss from being a windows user. Xee is getting PRETTY close already tho.

Keep up the amazing work!

79 Name: Anonymous : 2007-01-23 01:33 ID:zY+hcONV [Del]

the old version 1.21 kept the settings for an image once applied (i.e. rotating 90 degree, jpeg), I assume by writing the exiftags. This is no longer possible with 2.0 beta 2.
I hope I didn't miss some obvious settings...

80 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-01-23 04:03 ID:TPNWUte8 [Del]

>>79

It did it by losslessly rotating the image data itself. 2.0 does it too but you have to pick "Save Losslessly..." after rotating, or press Command-S.

I've been thinking of adding an option to do this automatically, but I've not decided yet if that's a good idea or not.

81 Name: Anonymous : 2007-01-29 19:08 ID:+23SKjRf [Del]

Well, it seems that after I upgraded to Xee 2.0 final and The Unarchiver 1.4, I cannot view images inside .zip archives anymore.

Previous archives that worked with Xee 2.0Beta2 and The Unarchiver 1.3 simply display "Couldn't display file xxxx.zip" in the statusbar.

Any ideas? Thanks!

82 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-01-29 19:15 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>81

Not sure, I've had a similar problem but it went away by itself. If you put the old The Unarchiver in the trash, try emptying it.

83 Name: Bruce Campbell : 2007-01-30 08:13 ID:2uRUhRZ8 [Del]

Hello,

CONGRATULATIONS for the new verson! Thank you for keepin' it free, how nice of you :)
Also thank you for that loop option. Hopefully, new verson of Xee will scan subfolders too and you won't think of dumb pople who drag root folder on the icon, he he he :) Rest of us could use that option, thank you :) :) :)

I have Unarchiver installed too and Xee reads .cbz and .cbr archives without problem. Great idea! I have a lot of scanned comics and it would be helpfull if Xee could remember zoom of a previous image.

Xee works even faster than before, on my PPC machine. You probably had a lot of work with this version but it came out just great! Best regards!

84 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-01-30 09:24 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>83

Check the View -> Automatic Zoom menu, there is an option to remember the zoom level. (Although the "shrink to fit" option overrides it, so remember to disable that.)

85 Name: Bruce Campbell : 2007-01-30 12:13 ID:P5s6DgHT [Del]

Hey, it works!

You're the man!

86 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-02 19:08 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

None of the antialiasing options shows in higher zoom modes any differences.
The image looks always not atialiased.
(G5, 10.4.8, NVidia 6600 w/256MB)

87 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-03 04:55 ID:Heaven [Del]

Does "higher zoom modes" mean scaling the image up? Antialiasing is only used when scaling the image down.

88 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-03 08:48 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

That is sad.
I would need antialiasing mainly on upscaling,
and in high quality (no visible jaggies).
Maybe in the next version?

89 Name: MacNerd : 2007-02-03 08:51 ID:Bsghzd8l [Del]

By the way, it would be nice, if XEE could work on nested folders as well.

90 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-03 10:02 ID:Heaven [Del]

Generally I don't think upscaling is ever a good idea. No matter how you do it, it will look ugly. The only times I want to actually scale up an image is when I want to look at the pixels, and if the image is smoothed this is impossible, which is why I haven't bothered implementing it. I might do it in the future, but it is not a priority.

Could you add information to the crop selection telling you what size the cropped size will be ?

You could just add the x & y sizes to the lower right corner of the crop tool ? or put some info in the bottom.

This would make xee even cooler

95 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-08 11:49 ID:Heaven [Del]

That is OS X picking Xee to open archives instead of some other program. You have to fix it yourself by choosing Get Info on an archive file, picking the right program, and then clicking "Change All". Or you can use RCDefaultApp to change which program opens archives.

Looks like that is broken, yes. Thanks.

98 Name: Gorm : 2007-02-08 22:04 ID:oAkCiAhJ [Del]

Not true. When i doubleclick on a .zip file, then stuffit opens. So ther must be some thing wrong in the installation of XSee 2. Un-installing it solves the problem.

99 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-10 11:33 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>98

No, Xee only tells OS X that it can open zip files. OS X itself chooses which program of those that say they can open them that actually opens it. You have to tell OS X which app you want to use by following the instructions in >>95. There is really nothing that can be done to change that.

100 Name: Gorm : 2007-02-14 09:28 ID:ie73A1tJ [Del]

But why does XSee try to open Zip files, when launched from VersionTracker ???
As I wrote before: Double Clikc on a .ZIP file it opens with StuffIt and NOT XSee.
Conclusion: Remove the unarchiver support in XSee.

Try it your selve, DL Version Tracker.

Because VersionTracker is broken. Report the bug to them.

Ping - Pong. :-(

Well, for now I have disablet auto unpacking from VersionTracker.

103 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-18 14:06 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>102

Well, the basic problem is that OS X's universal type system, which VersionTracker is probably using, is kind of broken. Ideally, VersionTracker should use it and work fine, but in practice you get these kinds of problems.

104 Name: Chris : 2007-02-21 11:48 ID:SCw/BHLQ [Del]

Thanks for writing Xee. Actually I most like it because it allows to turn off antialiasing, which is not possible in Preview.

Here are two wishes:

1) Please add a file LICENSE to the sources to make clear under which terms the source code can be used.

2) Were it possible to add an information field in the status footer line (maybe as an option in the preferences or in the toolbar), which displays the position (in image pixel coordinates col x row) of the mouse? When this mode is turned on, the mouse pointer probably shoud be set to an arrow.

Thanks.

>>104

No license, the code is public domain.

As for that feature, it seems a pretty niche feature, so I probably won't add it anytime soon, as I have a lot of other work to do anyway.

106 Name: Robert : 2007-02-27 06:49 ID:MuJz9NP/ [Del]

I suspect what some people were hoping for re: "antialiasing" was not so much upscaling as something like the Quartz "smooth images" effect with zoom in Universal Access. I often use ⌘⎇= to appreciate continuous-tone images that just don't have enough pixels. I don't know that it is possible to display such an effect in a resizable window.

107 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-02-27 10:36 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>106

That is exactly what upscaling is, and since the zoom effect in Universal Access is done on the graphics card hardware, just like Xee, it would look much the same.

Me, though, I turned that feature off immediately because I think it looks really horrible.

108 Name: xpab : 2007-03-27 00:31 ID:GSFUFTPO [Del]

Xee is a wonderful application. May thanks.

  • Bug/Enhancement : When you have choosen the "Fit to screen" option, if you rotate the image it "forget" the option and you have to manually reselect the "Fit to screen" to fit the image.
  • It would be nice if it could remember the rotation that have been aplied to images for the viewing session. Now if you rotate an image, go to the next and come back it has reverted to its original orientation.

Without the image you are trying to view, I can't do anything about that.

112 Name: bhcatlady : 2007-04-12 21:24 ID:f9IaQGBO [Del]

I seem to have a problem. To be honest I haven't read all 567 posts. Most of them I don't understand anyway.
I have a digital photo frame. I viewed all the pictures with Xee and deleted those I didn't want. They are on an SD card. None of them went to the trash. When I play the pictures, they all come up. If I go to the folder mode on the frame, it shows trashes and that is where the discarded pix live; but I am unable to see them on my Mac so that I can discard them permanently. How would I do this, or is it impossible?
Thanks for your response.

That's strange. Did you remove the card without ejecting it first or something?

To fix it, I'd suggest copying the working pictures off the card, reformatting it, and copying them back.

Thank you for your reply. No. I did NOT remove the camera BEFORE ejecting it. When I deleted the pictures, instead of going to my computer trash, they went to the card's trashes. The thing that really bothers me is I can't see the trashes on my computer nor the camera nor the frame when I plug it into the computer. I can see it only on the Digital Photo Frame. I checked from both the camera and the frame. I'll try to do what you suggested (groan) and see if that works. I reformat the card from my camera, right? I have forgotten. I don't have a card reader, but I guess I should get one.

You can probably do it from the camera, or on the computer, but I never did try to do it on OS X so I couldn't tell you how.

I just downloaded Xee and have not tried much. But what i've tried was not so successfull.
Since I switched to Mac I wasn't able to find a program to open my 20000x20000x256 color png file I have around (a street map).
Xee allocates 2G of memory and my 1G Mac is swapping like hell :(
A very old version of ACDSee I always used on pre-Mac-time had no problems to open this file. Hope you can somehow fix Xee to use only the required 400MB of memory.

As there is no real support in OpenGL for 256-colour textures, it's not going to happen, sorry.

Unless someone can figure out a trick to do it.

Hmm, there is EXT_paletted_texture but I think my iMac doesn't support it.
Couldn't verify it, cause a simple program to query gl-Extensions cored with Bus error.

Perhaps you know what wrong with this?

#include <stdio.h>
#include <GL/gl.h>
int main( int argc, char**argv )
{
printf( "%s", glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS) );
}

Hi,

First of all, thank you very much for developping this great application!

For some reasons when opening images stored on an external USB harddrive which is FAT32-formatted, images load very slow, compared to images stored on any local drive.
However, I couldn't reproduce this thing on a USB thumbdrive which is fat formatted too

any ideas?

122 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-05-03 08:19 ID:TPNWUte8 [Del]

That sounds very strange. Do other programs read the images slowly at all? Is copying them off the drive fast or slow?

I've just discovered Xee and love it. But I have one little feature request - could you add an option to browse only associated file formats? No it tries to open my RAFs and fails every time.

Hello, thanks for develping Xee, with which I can rename my files from different remote computer (other than with viewer).

however, I can't save cropped files on neither the remote computer nor my local computer.
with apples preview app, I can crop even the remote, so I assume, I have the correct access rights.

anything I missed configuring in Xee?

I habe UnRARX on my Mac for extracting RAR Archives. But now i installed Xee and it wants to open all RAR Archives. I found no option to disable that and bring UnRarX back.
Even if i rightklick on a file and select open with - always open with UnRarX, Xee tries to open the Rar the next time...

Hi, just discovered Xee, great work!

Any chance you could support XPM format (both for reading and conversion from other formats)?

Cheers

It's somewhere on the far too long list of stuff to implement some day.

Hi!

thank you for the fast Xee 2.0!

Bug: when rotating a jpeg, the color-format gets changed from YCbCr H2V1 to YCbCr H1V2.

Additionally, Xee crashes when I proceed to the next image while still saving a rotation.

Thank you,
Helmut

That's not a bug. It's pretty obvious the horizontal and vertical resolution should be swapped if you rotate the image, no?

I've been trying to figure out what causes the crashes, as I thought I fixed that already, but no luck so far.

> XPM has nothing to do with dates in any form. The XPM library is therefore Y2K compliant.

Hello,
my colors in xee and preview are not the same, the colors in xee are much more boring and soft. is this why xee doesn´t take the color profiles of the pictures? it´s a bit bad, hope to change this in newer versions!

The keyboard shortcuts for the arrow keys appear to override proper navigation of the Open dialog. They really shouldn't be active while in that window.

135 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-07-23 12:23 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>134

I can't reproduce that. What are you doing?

136 Name: Anonymous : 2007-07-23 15:02 ID:ZkW/44vB [Del]

I set the left and right arrows to switch to previous and next images, rather than scroll the image (which I usually don't need since I size things to fit the window - even though it moves about). When in open/save dialogs, left/right arrow now do nothing.

Absolutely the BEST image viewer available on the Mac. It loads jpg's blindingly fast, 2.0 has very nice anti-aliasing and good color rendering, and a slideshow mode!

I use it to browse and show my digital photo's almost every day, and sent a donation to the author. He deserves it! If you use Xee as much as I do, please consider donating, it's well worth the money/effort.

After I rotate an image 90 degrees, the save losslessly button is in the file menu is dimmed. Why is that?
