This is the support thread for Xee. All kinds of questions and bugreports can be posted in here. This thread will also be linked from inside the program itself.

There is also a thread about Xee here: http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1122405906/
It contains more general discussion, and announcements of new versions and updates.

The crop feature doesn't seem to be functioning correctly.

I position the frame over the exact area to retain, when I hit return or command-k the outer area gets cropped which is right. Then I do a Save As and choose JPEF with no recompressing plus I have to additionally choose Trim or Expand which is strange since cropping always trims something off. Anyway, if I choose Expand then the program adds a border (a few pixels wide) along the top and right side. Conversely, with Trim the program cuts away a border also on the top and right side. I can never get the exact area that I've framed with the crop tool. Is this a bug or did I do something wrong?

Am using OS 10.4.10 and Xee 2.0. Thanks for all the time you put into this program.

Lossless JPEG cropping can only crop along the edge of the blocks in the image, which are 8x8 or 16x16 pixels, depending. You have to set it to re-compress the image if you want to crop exactly, but you'll lose some quality.

203 Name: Anonymous : 2008-04-15 10:38 ID:Heaven [Del]

How is width stored in JPEG beyond the number of DCT blocks? I think you could crop by changing that.

204 Name: Martin : 2008-04-15 10:44 ID:VxTOPGas [Del]

Another vote for auto-loss less saving.

Perhaps instead of auto saving upon rotation, make it save when user navigates away from the image after doing the rotation. This will save some CPU cycles compared to saving it after each rotation. I.e. if the user rotates it CW 90 degrees 3 times to get it correctly orientated, if it were to auto save only when the user navigates away from the image, this will be better than doing it 3 times.

Also, is there a reason that rotated & saved pics show up in their original orientation if quickly navigated back to them? This can be a headache when you are rotating many images and not sure if you missed a few... I assume it has something to do with pre-caching.

That only works on two out of four edges.

Indeed it does. Fixing it is tricky.

> That only works on two out of four edges.

Yeah, I just realized that... well, you can crop per-MCU on the top and left and crop per-pixel on the other two sides.

I do. Also, which edges can be cropped will vary depending on if you also rotate the image at the same time.

A simple request. I love the app, but I wish there was an option to tun off the auto image fit and display the actual size of the image by default. Is it possible to do so?

xee is a great app. i love it. i just have a quick question about cropping. (i understand about having to follow the edges of the 8x8px or 16x16px macroblocks, to maintain lossless saving), but could you briefly explain what the difference is, when cropping, between "trim" mode and "expand" mode? both appear to have almost the same results. intuitively, i would assume that cropping, by definition, would always trim, but there must be some difference between trim and expand, for it to be coded in as an option. thanks in advance.

It's the choice of what happens to any partial macroblocks that can't be cropped exactly. Trim removes them, and expand keeps them.

is there any plan on adding image re-sizing capabiliites to Xee in the future?
(to shrink down large images from their originals--say make a 3000x2000 pixel image 300x200 pixels. this seems most useful for preping files for web.)

If you accept this request, please consider not disabling the current behavior. Losing the ability to rotate quickly for display purposes (without the rotation being committed to the file or remembered by Xee) would break the app pretty badly for me.

Hi all!! Thank you so much for this good and useful application. I found one problem. I usually open pictures by Xee on fullscreen. When I leave fullscreen pressing Esc, proseed it in window. On the bottom are important informations about this picture, but at this moment is not size in percents shown correctly.

I really like your application, I am just wondering if it is possible to assign the trackpad-scroll function to be for moving the image around instead of to move back and forth between pictures. I tried messing with the keyboard assignment configuration, but I was never able to get it to work. I don't even know how to assign a shortcut to left and right scrolling, so that's out of the picture. However, up-and-down scrolling never worked for me, either.

Very nice app - I even blogged it.

I would like to make a few suggestions, if I may:

in the full-screen mode when you are going through the files and reach the end of the directory... nothing happens. You are just stuck confused without any indication that you have simply run out of files.

The user-friendly behavior would be:

1) Indicate that the end of the directory has been reached, and
2) give an option to either wrap around or go up (or down) a folder.

The perfect execution would overlay a nice dark directory tree on top of the last image and allow to either traverse it with arrow keys or just press "space" (or whatever is configured to go to the next image) to wrap around the current folder.

An extra hotkey to bring up this directory overlay wold be a bonus ;-)

This is the only thing (beside resizing) that stands between Xee and total perfection!

Many many thanks in advance.

~Andrey

>>221

It's already possible to turn on wrapping around.

However, I don't really think behaviour that does anything like that is very user friendly. I often just hold down the next button to get to the end, and if that made all kinds of junk pop up on top of my image that I had to get rid of, I would find that incredibly annoying.

It's basically surprising behaviour - the user expected the next image, but they got some kind of weird directory tree. It breaks the law of least astonishment. At the most, some kind of subtle indicator that you've reached the end is the most I'd think is appropriate.

Thanks for that great application, I love it!

But there is one thing that could be improved: When flipping through image files in full screen mode Xee first deletes the whole screen with the black background color (as it is black in my preferences) and then it paints the next picture on top of the cleared screen. This causes screen flickering when quickly browsing through a list of images.

This can be avoided if the new image is painted on top of the last image and the new borders are painted after the new image has been painted on screen. This means, that just the area between the image border and the screen border is then painted using the black background color.

Doing this you can easily flip through high-res images and it looks like a HDTV would be playing. Works great on fast machines.

I made this recommendation to the author of IrfanView about two years ago and he greatly enjoyed and implemented this feature. So using irfanview on a windows computer offers flickerfree browsing through images.

I would greatly appreciate if you could think about implementing such a flicker free browsing too.

Thank you. Best regards Oliver.

230 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-09-23 18:36 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>229

You are misunderstanding what is going on. Xee only paints black on the screen when it has not fully loaded the image yet. You can't draw what's not there. If you browse slowly enough that it has time to load each image in advance, there will be no black.

231 Name: OliK : 2008-09-28 23:47 ID:AyXknjXU [Del]

Try out IrfanView on the PC, there it works.
Alternatively you can use double buffering as an option.
Currently the screen flickers, and that is what distracts.
If you might want to get rid of this flickering you are welcome, if not, I don't care, there are other viewers which can flickerfree paint images.
I surely do understand, still flickering is distracting. That is probably what you did not understand. Thanks anyway.

232 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-09-29 12:49 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>231

No, see, that's a feature. Instead of having to wait for the entire image to load, you can see the part that has loaded so far It has nothing to do with double-buffering or painting. Painting is entirely flickerfree already. It's just that entire image has not been loaded yet if you browse quickly. The "fix" for this would require preventing you from browsing until the image is fully loaded.

Hi, I use Xing as my default image viewer and I love it, though I've been hoping for some updated features for a while now. Since I haven't seen an update for a long time, I was wondering if the app is being actively supported and developed.

Some enhancements that I would love to see include:

  • Slideshow transition effects (at minimum a "fade" option)
  • Keyboard shortcut for slideshow start/stop
  • Allow automatic slideshow stop when exiting full screen mode
  • Hide hand/pointer after timeout when in full screen mode
  • Pre-loading, buffering, and/or caching of image data to allow faster browsing without flicker-like effect (like in ACDSee)
  • Option to quit program on Escape (instead of just closing window)
  • Allow image rotation in Full Screen mode

Let me know when we might see an update for Xee.

Thanks!

> Keyboard shortcut for slideshow start/stop

You can change all the keyboard shortcuts already.

> Pre-loading, buffering, and/or caching of image data to allow faster browsing without flicker-like effect

This has been implemented since 1.0.

> Allow image rotation in Full Screen mode

Works fine with keyboard shortcuts or the right-click menu.

235 Name: freediverx : 2008-10-19 14:52 ID:smP1DlIv [Del]

Thanks for the quick reply.

Keyboard shortcut:
I didn't see an option for a slideshow shortcut the first time around, but I now found it listed under "Run". Thanks

Buffering:
I stand corrected. I was testing using a folder of very large 8MP images. But with more typical image sizes Xee keeps up nicely. I suppose I could request a setting to adjust the buffer size, but I suspect the amount of memory required to buffer 8MP images for fast browsing would be excessive.

Image Rotation in Full Screen mode:
For some reason this doesn't work for me. In normal window view, I can use Command-R or my custom Command-Arrow shortcuts to rotate images in both directions. But in full screen mode neither shortcut seems to have any effect. Any suggestions?

236 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-10-19 16:14 ID:Heaven [Del]

That's weird about the fullscreen rotation. It worked fine when I checked just to be sure. I have no idea what would cause it to not work.

How do i set it up so that when going through a large directory and browsing in full screen mode, that hitting just the delete key, deletes the file without confirmation and go to the next image?

I've tried various combinations, but when I try assinging delete without confirmation to the delete key all I get it doing is dinging and no action is taken.

I've recently upgraded my Canon Camera to 50D and their Raw files seem to be new format. Xee uses OS X's raw image loading, so you have to wait until Apple updates it.

If Preview can open it and Xee can't, though, that's a bug and I'd like a copy of the image to test with.

241 Name: Anonymous : 2008-11-27 05:41 ID:zjbSPw+b [Del]

Two related bugs with the latest version:

  • When hitting backspace and triggering the "delete after confirmation" command, you can't cancel by pressing esc, which is expected from any dialog with a cancel button. It's annoying since accidental presses force you to use the mouse.

Which leads to the second issue:

  • I removed both keys bound to "Delete after confirmation" because I found myself hitting backspace accidentally all the time. But after a relaunch, these two keys are re-assigned to this command. This do not happen when I only remove one key - you need to remove both to reproduce the bug.

242 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-11-30 16:03 ID:vmX3BVcR [Del]

>>241

As far as I can tell, you can cancel that dialog with the esc key? Do you have any haxies installed that break it?

Also, file that other bug on the bug tracker so I'll remember to get around to looking at it.

or rather, like part of it.
I'm using version 2.0, on PPC
here's console.log:

Xee (659, 0xa000ed88) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug

followed by a crash
Note that the (size=#) is identical to the one in his post.
it seems to occur on precisely two images. Any other image loads perfectly fine.
I'd provide you with copies of them, but they are of a ahem sensitive nature.
I will see if there is any abnormality with them. Perhaps missing/incomplete/damaged EXIF? or was that bug taken care of?

244 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-12-11 11:27 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>243

Probably broken EXIF. I think the development version has a newer version of exiftags with several bugs fixed, so it might be fixed already. When the new version comes out, test again and report back if it's still broken.

Great program, thanks for making it free.

A few requests, and I'm not knocking your program vs. Preview it is just that Preview has a few features that are really convenient that would be great to see partnered up with the great stuff in Xee.

Could you please add:

  • a preference or option so that when you rotate a picture from horizontal to vertical it automatically 'zooms' out and fits the screen in vertical format? (This is what happens in Preview when you rotate). Currently I have to rotate, then click (or hot key) 'fit screen' to be able to see the whole photo. I looked for a preference setting for this but couldn't find one, perhaps I missed it?
  • a drawer on the side for the thumbs like Preview (I find this very handy personally)

A note on a possible bug? I tried using the 'Save As' option to save a rotated photo and compare it with the original re: resolution, file size etc. for interest sake. I named the photo xxxxxx.jpeg-2.

Xee then saved this as a .doc file. ? I don't know why. I can name duplicate files like this in Preview/Finder and Seashore and they are saved correctly as jpegs.

Thanks again for a great free program, very useful.

Is there a way to change the checker background? I want to use a more Photoshop-ish version... Maybe it could be configurable/selectable?

I noticed that when viewing some psd files which have saved alpha channels, the image is displayed using the first alpha channel as the transparency mask. That should not happen, in my opinion (although the Preview app behaves the same)...

Hi,

Excellent prgram! Preview is very annoying...

Just one request - is there any way of being able to right click on the picture itself so that you can set it as desktop background, move to trash etc? At the moment, I can't see a way of having anything but that little gloved hand icon moving over the picture....

Apart from that, it's really all you need for a picture viewing program - I especially love the way you can easily scroll through pictures using the mouse wheel!

Is there a way to have a thumbnail strip showing when viewing pictures in Full screen mode? This massively helps with navigation of folders containing thousands of pics.

If not, is there a "suggested additions" area or anything?

Thanks, I love Xee already, only used it for a few minutes but it's great.

Hi,
I just discovered Xee and i´m very pleased by i´t´s option, especially the variable shortcuts!
Only one thing i´m missing, because I mostly have jpg and raw in my folders. Would it be possible to implement an option to show either "jpg AND nef" or "ONLY jpg" or "ONLY raw"? So you would not need to click twice to see the next picture and in the slideshow Pictures also would not be shown twice.
Thanks so far!

Hi!

Xee does ghost the menu entry for showing the clipboard, though I have a PICT image in the clipboard slot, which I want to view. Also, it may be nice, especially for such cases, to open with an empty window, instead of an "Open File..." dialog. One could aso d
&d images onto there.

270 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2009-10-27 07:06 ID:Heaven [Del]

Xee is not an editor, so opening an empty window is somewhat non-sensical.

Also, which OS version are you having clipboard problems on? Snow Leopard seems to have less support for PICT clipboard data.

Hi,
i just downloaded Xee and it's really fast!!!!!
But I just want to see and open one type of file within one folder! Like Xee should just open JPEG or RAW but not both, because I would not like to see each pic twice...
I've configured Xee via preferences, but without effect - why?!?

Please help! :-)

Topic 271 still unsolved - OS is snow leopard, is it related to the OS that the preferences settings do not take any effect?!?

Those preferences are only for setting the default app for the various extensions.

It has nothing to do with making Xee unable to open a file.

Why is there a difference regarding RAW support between OSX 10.5 and 10.6?
With 10.6 it is possible to open Leica RAW (.rwl) in contrast to 10.5 :(
Or is the Adobe RAW component loaded (I couldn't verify this with activity monitor)...
btw. the file-type is not supported by the Apple RAW component on either system revision

Xee just uses the OS X ImageIO framework to load raw files. Can Preview open .rwl on 10.5? If not, Xee can't either.

Thank you for the answer.
Strangely neither 10.5 oder 10.6 is able to open this kind of RAW-Format with preview.app.
But xee can open the file on my MBP with 10.6.2 - my iMac with 10.5.8 cannot.
The only difference on my MBP is the RAW Software from Capture One (4 Std.) and Adobe (CS4) - which is installed. Both software solutions can read this filetype.

That's very strange. If Xee can, then Preview should too, I would think.

Hi,
I thought I had a problem with Finder (OSX 10.6.2) but now I think I found a problem with Xee.
I opened an image (shot with a Casio EX-Z12) that was shot on portrait but Finder (icon view, show icon preview) shows the preview on landscape (I think there is no rotation info on the image itself). Then I used Xee to rotate the image and save it losslessly. Now Finder shows the right frame (portrait) but the content isn't rotated (no problem opening the image with Xee). I even tried to save the rotated image as PNG and everything works fine.
(Here I attach just the Finder rendered previews).

Wonderful little program, thank you.

I'm using .PEF files (Pentax RAW format) which Xee can apparently read, but does not consider, when going from image to image in a folder. Any way to add PEF as one of the extensions Xee looks at?

Thanks, best,

Geza

If I recall correctly, I am using the list of extensions that OS X claims to be able to handle for that, so it might be an OS X bug. File an issue on the bug tracker, though, to remind me to check it more thoroughly.

Use the keyboard config in the preferences window.

I am having the same issue as Rigido (#279)!! Very annoying! It will also give the correct thumbnail if you Save As and choose 'JPEG, without recompressing,'but then writes over the Date Created with the current date/time - most people want to preserve the original date/time.

Thought this was a great program, until discovering this...

I could not find any documentation, hence I ask here at the forums:

How can I crop and then losslessly save in Xee?

Xee is advertised with "Losslessy rotate and crop JPEG images".
When I rotate the image, Xee allows me to use "Menu > Save Losslessy".
But when I start the crop tool and apply it, Xee makes the "Save losslessly" menu inactive.

According to my understanding of JPEG, lossless crop&save would require me to cut along the "JPEG MCU block lines" and not through them, as the outer blocks would then need recoding.

I tried whether there is a modifier key, that helps me to snap the cropping lines along the block lines, but neither ALT, SHIFT or CMD helped.

"Save losslessly" is disabled when you crop, because that is obviously not really a "lossless" operation.

Use Save As and choose "JPEG, without recompressing".

What happens on a technical level if I choose "JPEG, without recompressing"?

And is my imagination of cutting along MCU block lines possible?

And if, could you imagine adopting your GUI, so that the cropping grid only allows cutting along the MCU block lines?

"JPEG, without recompressing" is just does the same lossless JPEG transforms as most lossless JPEG editing tools, transforming and reordering MCUs, and dropping those that are cropped out.

There's an option of whether to expand or contract the cropping area so it matches MCU borders. I did want it to be possible to see directly in the GUI how that would work, but I never figured out what the proper way to implement it would be, so I never got it done.

I have a suggestion of how to implement it in the GUI:

A) If one moves the crop frame normally, MCU lines are ignored.
B) If you move the crop frame with the ALT key pressed, the crop frame always snaps to the nearest MCU block line/edge.

Will you implement this? Would be great!

The lossless crop process as I imagine it, in detail:

1) Already the initial point shall be set directly at a MCU edge point. To achieve this already within the first step, the user holds down the ALT key and moves the mouse around without a mouse-button pressed until the cursor points at the desired snapping point. Note: The mouse movements do not drag a frame yet, they only set the initial point!
2) Then the user press-and-holds a mouse-button and remains holding the ALT key and moves the cursor to determine the second edge point and hence already determines the complete crop frame.
3) Possibly continue to move the other edges/lines until the cropping frame is completed as desired.
4) Possibly move the whole frame along the MCU-raster by holding the ALT key and click-and-holding the mouse cursor within the frame square, followed by moving the mouse and hence the frame around, until the mouse button is released.

Note: If setting the initial edge on the raster (1) cannot be realised, it is also possible to simply start the initial edge on an arbitrary point (likely no MCU edge), set the other snapped edge(s)/line(s) first (2) and in the last step correct the initial arbitrary point to a MCU edge!

How to set destination folders in version 2.1.1?
I didn't found anything in menu that could do that.

Also menu items "File->Copy File" and "File->Move File"
are gray, even though image file is opened.

is it a bug or I am missing something?
