Announcing new imageboard (32)

Since Albright pointed a link here from Thorn, this looks like a good place to announce it.

I used thorn's code and built an imageboard.
At here-> www.anonib.com

It's a lot different than other imageboards in 4 ways.
1) users can easily create their own board
2) searching other board is possible
3) links are not cluttered, users can add a new link if they like the site by clicking on the "remember board" link
4) boards have subboards

And major thanks to Albright. There's no way I could have made the site without it. If anyone ever wants to make their own site, use his. I had 0 experience with php, mysql, smarty, javascript when I started work on the anonib site 2 months ago.

Also, my test board is here:
http://www.anonib.com/temp/

If anyone wants to ask anything, feel free. My aim is at Mell03d0ut.

Also, if anyone's curious. You will be the admin/mod of your board.

I created the child porn board. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful at posting any pictures. Thorn sucks.

what are you talking about? how can you be uncessful at posting pictures? The only way for that to happen is if you turn off picture posting

I clicked "post" and my browser twiddled its thumbs for about fifteen minutes, then I gave up and closed the tab.

you sure it's not just you? the server's suppose to be running on 100mbs lines.

Nice cleanup of the template. I wish Albright would do that for the default one, too.

You should still drop the useless "Image:" in front of the upload field, though.

Very neat idea. It looks like a great way for people without webhosting/technical knowhow to create boards. I guess it's like /niche/ extreme.

Some questions you might have thought of already:

Shouldn't you have spam protection (for creation)? Autodeletion?
Is this site going to stay up?
Are you worried about large volumes and throttling? It's a good thing to think about if you aren't too busy.
I already forgot the name of the board I made, you NEED a full directory.

If subboards start going on the sidebar I'm going to rebel.

I tried to keep things simple, mainly because I don't know how to code much(lol?). I have no idea how to do spam protection/auto-deletion/throttling. Maybe copy/paste the vctest code over? Unfortunately, I don't have the technical know-how to code it. I'll probably just google it like I did for the rest of the site.

As for subboards, you can't remember subboards. Only the main board. I also have a full directory, it's at the top. It shows all of the non-hidden boards.

I gave my code to another imageboard owner(who I'll keep anonymous), since he's pretty nice. And also, if he catches any bugs, he'll tell me.

To waha, I have to keep the "image" word there, or people will try to upload other things.

Then isn't it much more logical to change to "Upload" label to "Image" instead?

dude, that sentence is way confusing. I had to do a double-take on it. I'm going to assume "change to upload instead of image?" =O

Upload can mean anything, but image is very specific. Also, if you're browsing through your files like that, I'm pretty sure they'll realize that you're uploading. I tried to make the site as non-confusing as possible to users(whether old or new).

Also, I could really use some tips on how to get new people to come to the site.

OH YEA, I'm thinking of opening up all of my tpl files so the people on the anonib site can create their own new templates. Good idea/bad idea?

I'm not sure how that'll work out though, the tpl files were way confusing when I worked on them.

That sentence went very, very wrong somewhere along the way. My apologies. What I meant to write was:

Then isn't it much more logical to change the "Upload" label to "Image" instead? And remove the redundant and out-of-place "Image:" text?

If "spam protection" means vericodes and "auto-deletion" means pruning of old threads, then Thorn already supports those, unless you've turned them off or disabled them when you were twiddling with the source code somehow.

Pruning of old, unused boards is important as well.

yea, the auto-deletion and spam protection for individual boards is there. but auto-deletion and spam protection for creating new boards isn't.

So far, I have to manually delete board, but I added code to allow the board admins to frag their own board. The only bad part is that most admins don't want to frag their own board, no matter how bad it gets.

good point. I'll do that.

I like the concept a lot, but I don't know if it will work out in the long run. Basically I envision one of the two happening over time:

  1. A lot of small boards with just a few posts that are eventually forgotten.
  2. A few big (/b/-esque) boards where everyone posts; no one cares about smaller boards.

But I'm no expert on sociology.

well, I actually thought about that ahead of time. That's why the site directory's sorted by time of last post.

The main problem is trying to get new people interested in the site. It's taking awhile, but I'm getting a lot of good ideas on finding people who are interested in the site. I'm not sure how things will turn out, but let's hope it turns out ok.

Yeah, that discussion. Well, the internet is saturated with sites; there are sites for everything, and it's hard to find a niche. But based on my experiences it's a combination of trying to keep the peeps you have while letting more people come in over time. Expecting to need yourself a dedicated server overnight is dumb, you could give away free porn and fail at that, but then again if you sit back and just expect dudes to show up, that's not going to work either, so you gotta try to shake things up a little yourself.

But we talked about this the other day.

In my time, I have yet to make a website that used more bandwidth than my poorly-designed Pokemon website from seven years ago. I actually made 100s of dollars off of it ;_;
