Itt we talk about how we can use Wikipedia and other large Wiki projects to help spread knowledge on Futaba, 2channel and relevant informations.

As I see, some jokesters have deleted the list of 2ch boards. In the VfD discussion, somebody even linked to 4-ch's portal as a reason why the article shouldn't be kept anymore.
I don't know if there's any hope to restore the article, but here are the relevant links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=delete&user=&page=List+of+2ch+Boards
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Log/2005_April_28#List_of_2ch_Boards

Even the article on >>1-san almost got deleted. We should have a close watch on the people on Wikipedia who seem to be largely ignorant of how huge 2channel is and thus disregard all information that is kept of it.

Other relevant articles/links we could help maintain, correct and expand:

Hah, I just found another wiki with the content of the deleted 2ch board list article (thanks Google & mirror wikis):

I did a minor edit or two.

I propose a "2ch-style board" article explaining sage and age, tripcodes, and such, in a general fashion that applies to 0ch, Futaba, Wakaba, Kareha, Shiichan, and what have you. However, I am too lazy to write it! Go do my bidding, minions!

4 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-24 14:15 ID:Heaven [Del]

I think it'd need a better title than "2ch-style board".

5 Name: Mr VacBob!JqK7T7zan. 2005-06-24 14:49 ID:pznVtZpk [Del]

I'm already maintaining Tripcode (almost all the text there is mine, although not logged in), but haven't be bothered to document the 2ch trip algorithm, especially since there isn't an article on DES hashing.

(kareha bug I just noticed posting this: if you click a post number to generate a >>X and there isn't a newline at the end of the post, it should add one)

It would be nice to have one that only explains the workings of the software, which can be shown to people who are not used to these things. The 2ch article has too much distracting information to be useful for that.

Also, I think I had some reason for not adding a newline, but that's lost in the mists of time now.

8 Name: Mr VacBob!JqK7T7zan. 2005-06-24 15:18 ID:pznVtZpk [Del]

Oh, and special bonus overly ambitious feature suggestion: if the last thing in the post box is an >>X, it should make it >>X,Y or even create a range.

Put together some Javascript that does it (and works cross-browser, or at least degrades gracefully), and I'll put it in in the almost-mythical Next Release.

"2ch-style board" sounds awkward, though. Any better suggestions for a title?

Well, this is the Japanese Wikipedia article on 2channel, maybe somebody with actual knowledge of the language can retrieve the needed term from there:

I am sad that the list of 2ch boards article is gone from Wikipedia.
It seemed useful to me and it's not as good to have just one list on 4-ch which cannot be edited in the Wikipedia-style.
Also, other, less popular forums, like SomethingAwful, have their own articles for board lists, so I don't see why 2channel shouldn't.

Anyone know how the deletion can be reversed?

24 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-10 02:29 ID:UqY5wjHX [Del]

Also, I am thinking about writing up a paragraph on the whole "Nomaneko" incident and edit it into the 2ch article.

If you have any ideas on what should be included, write here or in the 4-ch thread: http://4-ch.net/ascii/kareha.pl/1127040509

25 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-10 06:05 ID:Heaven [Del]

Maybe it could also be included here:

It didn't have any content. It was just a Romaji list copy-paste. Something Awful does not have its own article for board lists.

>>26
It could have been expanded and actually be useful, something I was working on.

Also, I was incorrect about the SA boards having their own article. They are however, all listed on the article concerning them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_Awful_Forums

Of course, a 2channel list would be too extensive for the 2channel article itself so it makes sense to have a seperate article.

28 Name: 27 2005-10-10 12:19 ID:Heaven [Del]

> something I was working on.

I should have mentioned that I was actually working on translating parts of the 2channel FAQ and elsewhere to properly describe the boards. I did this for a few boards and edited it in the article, then stopped for a month or so only to come back and find the article deleted. It was really frustrating.

29 Name: Shii 2005-10-10 14:16 ID:Oa+HSWDO [Del]

I added content to the article too, but I voted for its deletion because it's unencyclopedic.

30 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-10 15:09 ID:Heaven [Del]

You could add it to the 4-ch wiki.

31 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-10 19:26 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>29
In what way is it unencyclopedic?
Your reason for deletion stated that the 4-ch portal for 2ch already existed, which is about something else.

In case you didn't know: Dag Ågren, aka !WAHa.06x36, is the author of Wakaba and Kareha.

34 Name: 32 2005-10-14 07:51 ID:Heaven [Del]

I just added Dag Ågren as an author of both Kareha and Wakaba. The former article is also linked from the Kibology article.

Trivia: The article on Wakaba itself once got deleted, for dumb reasons. Apparently, lots of useful articles get deleted all the time on Wikipedia...

Some spammers keep spamming in their new & trivial imageboard @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imageboard#External_links
If any Wikipedians are here, you might want to revert their actions.

36 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-22 17:43 ID:K7iuDNT9 [Del]

I agree that wikipedia deletes far too many things for dubious reasons and is becoming ivory-toweresque. Luckily, some wikipedians (wtf?) are trying to reform the deletion process and policies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_reform

I know I have personally seen articles deleted as 'not notable', when they in fact are because people relied on that they had not heard of it, that it did not show up on google (what is robots.txt? I DUNNO LOL), and alexia ranking (yeah, thats scientific!). In the same case, this article was speedily voted for deletion because it had been deleted before. However, since non-administrators could not see the old page, they did not know that it was a spam article whereas the new article was a legitimate one.

I think wikipedia is a decent idea, that has just been implemented and run incorrectly so-far. At least, it does not live up to how it is touted and described in reality.

I have less than 20 edits, am I certainly not an wikipedian after I have see how badly they handle things. This is a serious chance for people that do not agree with how things are going and this thread lists varioues grievences people have had. I'm sure some of the people would like thinks to be changed.

here we talk about articles on /soc/ related topics and how to improve/create/save them

>>36 Hey, that's my page! +1 Wikigeekery! Anyway, lighten up. Wikipedia will never be the equal to an encyclopedia - and shouldn't be.

On imageboarding in general on Wikipedia, there's a perception that since this is an english project, a phenomonom that is percieved as mainly Japanese (and let's face it, sorta is) should not get the same coverage as, say, Slashdot, which is much more American. And unfortunately, that diferentiation between American and English-speaking is lost on some editors. The best we can do is to work on what is there, and make then detailed and informative (but not esoteric).

BTW, I'm an admin there. General questions about Wikipedia can be directed to my page (User:Humblefool) to avoid cluttering up this discussion.
