Post links to English-language image boards here. To start off, here are the usual suspects:

http://www.iichan.net/ - DEAD DEAD DEAD
http://www.4chan.org/ - The original English-language board.
http://www.0chan.net/w/ - The Switzerland of image boards.
http://www.5chan.net/ - lol furries

Post more, unless they prefer to stay secret.

First thing I saw when I clicked on /b/:

> eji!dicksDicksdicks ## Admin ##

Fake tripcodes AND capcodes? Laaaame. Also means tripcodes can't be trust to mean anything on that board, so anyone who has a valid reason to use a tripcode should stay well away from it.

425 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-02 21:29 ID:bY/yLTI4 [Del]

>>424

With kusaba, the admin only can set the tripcode for himself and other admins, as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong, but either way, it's really nothing to worry about.

Also, by your logic, anyone who has a valid reason to use a tripcode should stay well away from Kusaba. Then again, maybe other board scripts have this ability and you just don't know? Best best would be to stay away form them all in that case.

426 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-02 22:58 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>425
Obviously you have to trust the admins not to be dicktards and post with everyone's tripcodes. I'm just saying I wouldn't trust of the admins of that board. Or really, as you say, Kusaba' s boards in general.

I've looked at a lot of imageboard scripts, but somehow this "feature" of being able to post with a custom not-tripcode has escaped me. (Perhaps I've missed a few of its "features" in my amazement at the altogether shittiness of the script as a whole, but that's a different subject.)

My point isn't that it's not possible with other boards, it's that Kusaba's interface is actively suggesting people do this by providing a fake tripcode field. Sure, you can do the same with Kareha with capcodes, or really with any board by editing the database (or whatever storage method it uses) but it's not something that the board is specifically written to do.

427 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-02 23:18 ID:bY/yLTI4 [Del]

>>426

I think you would need to go into the config or a related file to set the fake tripcode. It's not as if there's a page with "FAKE TRIPCODE HERE" or anything like that. Though, I do understand how one would feel uncomfortable about the whole thing if you really NEED to use a tripcode. But generally, I don't think it's something that would worry the average poster.

428 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-03 07:15 ID:Heaven [Del]

429 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-03 18:54 ID:xCb+Nvkh [Del]

well, aren't admins also supposed to be allowed to inject SQL? that could easily modify any tripcode. The point is you will have to trust admins, anywhere on the Internet

430 Name: Anonymous : 2007-12-04 02:40 ID:Heaven [Del]

> Sure, you can do the same with Kareha with capcodes, or really with any board by editing the database (or whatever storage method it uses) but it's not something that the board is specifically written to do.

My point being kusaba is the only board that actively suggests it.

Speed mostly. I find those features such as auto-post linking a bit useless on slow-moving boards. The goal is in the end, faster content at slower download speeds. (In before somebody calls me out for not having compression enabled as well, working on that, lighty's being wonky.)
That being said, cross-thread linking does work through pure html.

Well......

  • Can't see anything about a thread until clicking on it.
  • Placing the posting form on a separate page discourages people from contributing.
  • BBcode is braindead. If you're parsing something HTML-like anyway, why not go the extra zero percent and parse actual HTML?
  • It doesn't seem like there's any convenient way to reference previous posts; at least, there's no sort of post numbering.
  • Same selection of boards as pretty much any generic imageboard. "Halp"?
  • The "moderate" button suggests that the board is run by the moderators, rather than the users. Read this, particularly the last paragraph. It's on a different subject but the concept applies here as well.
  • "?task=board&value=bs" - mega-ugly URLs.
  • Page caching is aggressively disabled, which is a waste of bandwidth.
  • Written in PHP. Don't get me wrong; this isn't inherently bad, but usually this is the case, and judging by the "function redir($cake)" I see in the page source, I'm not altogether optimistic about the quality of the backend code.

484 Name: Anonymous : 2008-04-26 16:48 ID:fOglHoOG [Del]

  • Adds to the surprise. No just kidding, but that's what subjects are for.
  • Are people really too lazy to click a link to the post form. IMO it takes up unneeded space in the board/thread view.
  • BBcode gets the job done.
  • Yeah I know ):
  • I suppose
  • The moderate button is the only sign of moderation on the boards, mods have no way of identifying themselves.
  • I may play around with Mod-Rewrite sometime in the future.
  • Fixed.
  • Well, that's just the javascript, the actual backend is clean and well written.

Thanks for the feedback.

485 Name: Anonymous : 2008-04-27 03:10 ID:Heaven [Del]

  • Makes it harder to read the board. I like being able to, for example, load /soc/ and get the most recent posts along with the context of the threads they're in, all on one page.
  • Perhaps you're not realizing why it's so useful to have this on the same page. First, having the post form in plain view actively invites people to post a reply, rather than merely suggesting that it is possible to do so. Second, putting the form on a separate page necessitates flipping back and forth, or opening two browser windows, in order to refer back to previous posts in the thread. I understand it's a matter of opinion, but this is the main reason why I don't even bother with most forums.
  • So does HTML, and it's not retarded. Assuming you're doing something more robust than s/\[(\/?[biu])\]/<$1>/g (and I really hope you are), you're already doing most of the work. Plus, there's libraries abound for other markup schemes; PHP-Markdown, for example, is pretty easy to install and use.

I'd still go for hiding the mod panel login on a different page. (admin.php, maybe?) It's a wart on an otherwise very clean layout.

There was a notice in the rules area which explained the lack of true thumbnails. The framework I'm using (Google App Engine) doesn't include any kind of image library with Python.
Now I use an off-site script to process the thumbnails, which pushes them back when finished.
