"USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST" mark (35, permasaged)

1 Name: Anonymous 2005-02-10 20:36 ID:CvfmrdIF (Replies) [Del]

This was in futaba, any chance of this being implemented?

2 Name: Anonymous 2005-02-11 02:27 ID:Heaven (Replies) [Del]

Huh? I thought Futaba only had the option to reveal a poster's IP to the public.

I think he meant futallaby

No, never.

I feel that message is the image board equivalent of public executions. Bans are not to be used to set an example to the unruly hordes of users, bans should be used to stop abuse of the board and allow the users to enjoy it without the distractions of floods and excessive asshattery.

5 Name: Anonymous 2005-02-11 08:10 ID:Heaven (Replies) [Del]

Also, as every admin has the option to include HTML into his / her posts (and probably even other people's posts), this could always be done / added manually.

6 Name: Anonymous 2005-02-11 22:25 ID:Heaven (Replies) [Del]

This is in 4chan's script because it was copied from SA (and it's turned off by default, too). /b/ needs public examples sometimes.

7 Name: Anonymous 2005-02-12 03:30 ID:Heaven (Replies) [Del]

It seems to be turned on on every board there, though.

8 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-02-12 07:32 ID:LjtYx7Q/ (Replies) [Del]

Further arguments against this:

You should never be banned for a post that is left on the board. The only reasons you should be banned is for abusing the board, and that means your posts should be deleted anyway because they are floods or similar.

"Turned off" means turned off when you're banning someone; you have to select that bit manually.

(It's turned on for every ban on SA because people being banned are funny.)

With the traffic that we have on 4chan, it is often neccessary to leave behind the mark stating that a user has been banned, if only to quell further discussion on the prohibited topic.

You'd be surprised, we don't leave all that many posts with the USER WAS BANNED message (deletion is the most common way to deal with rules violations, as you'd expect), and it is indeed keyed to Off by default, so it is usually not used. You just tend to notice it more, due to the format and placing of the message.

It has been added it to Yotsubanome

Congratulations, it took you four years to add a really stupid misfeature to a crappy board script that no one in their right mind would use.

13 Name: Anonymous : 2009-03-31 17:31 ID:TVW1wNlO [Del]

Since my imageboard is basically going to be specifically for me and a few friends, I would like to see a script like this just for some laughs.

I've been tring to write this script with no avail. Could anyone possibly help me out?

That's why I said "help" not "Could anyone possibly do this for me?" Though I see that this seems to be a running theme on these "support" boards, so I don't expect much anymore.
Anyway got a very crude version of this up, and yeah I've only used it once. (and it freaked the hell out of some of the people on the board) But I'm completely willing to share the code if anyone really wants it.

For complex stuff I am certainly willing to help, but this really is a trivial thing to add. "Helping" would consist largely of writing more words than the code necessary to implement it.

I agree, public executions are funny.

Hell, I don't even like those "Post deleted by moderator." message. Ridiculous.

it's pretty easy to change both S_USERDELETE and S_MODDELETE to something like 'Post deleted.'.

26 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-31 07:21 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>25
That's not what I mean. I mean it clutters the page. Whenever I visit a website with Kareha installed that has been a victim of spamming, I alway see these rows upon rows of POST DELETED BY MODERATOR.

That is so ugly and dumb. I understand if you have a message like that if the post that was deleted was between posts, but if all the posts deleted were just the most recent ones, they shouldn't show up.

>That is so ugly and dumb. I understand if you have a message like that if the post that was deleted was between posts

IMO, if a post is deleted between other posts, it should just be removed. And if it was referenced later on, that's when the reader should be informed it was deleted.

Deletion is done rarely enough that you can just rewrite the file.

Yes it can. Very easily!

how can i write the 420chan version of this

it has twitter accounts for ban announcements too, shows the banner and the ban reason on the post, etc? how to do this?

32 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-21 10:25 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>31
Break your problem down into small pieces:

  • find or write a library to post to twitter
  • make a function that writes ban information to twitter using that library
  • call that function when processing a ban request from the mgmt. panel.

Alternately, don't, because it's highly stupid.

It's not really an execution. Most bans aren't permanent, for one thing. Even if the ban is set to be permanent, the user can just come back under another name with another IP and behave.

And it helps the other users to know where the ban line is in real life.

And also why named user X is not showing up for a few days.

>>8

>You should never be banned for a post that is left on the board.

If the post can be left on the board, possibly edited, then, again, it makes it clearer to the other users what could get you banned. It's basically the good principle from real life that 'justice' should be done openly.

>>27

>IMO, if a post is deleted between other posts, it should just be removed.

On this board, a placeholder post for deleted posts really doesn't have any utility, because users could just note the gap in the numbering of the posts in the thread.

You're replying to posts that are four years old. Also, you are treating your users like little children.
