Good hosts for wakaba / Kareha / Notes (11)

I did something somewhat retarded I guess and got hosting at godaddy. So I'm looking for a decent web host at a decent price. I looked at nearlyfreespeech and when I get more people on the site and more space to fill up then it gets pretty pricey and I'm looking for something like singlehop where the prices are affordable and the space and bandwidth are just as good. But they have to be able to do adult content, if they can't it's no good and I'm not going to give them my money. Simple as that. I'll check and see if singlehop allows adult content.

I'm kind of a noob to the whole hosting thing and I really have no idea of what I need and when I have to move a step up (in hosting terms). I have around 30 something total boards going up, including notes, and a couple kareha boards with images.

I don't really understand how many people can be on all boards at once untilled I have to go dedicated.

I know I am going to have to sooner or later get a dedicated server, that's not really a question as much as a fact. I just want to put my money in the right hands of someone who isn't going to trip on my scripts and how much space I'm taking up. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to take up that much space either. it's all user generated content any how.

So any suggestions would be helpful.

I've never really had a good experience with shared hosting, but nearlyfreespeech never gave me an issue, and people here seemed to recommend Dreamhost a while back. I'm not a fan of Dreamhost, but apparently they aren't too bad for this sorta stuff.

If you have time, maybe you should get a cheap VPS and set it all up yourself. I ended up doing that, and its been great so far. Much cheaper (and surprisingly more reliable) than a lot of the shared hosts I used.

I mean just for the startup portion, a couple months to a year, maybe. Since no one would even know my site existed.

Did anyone check out singlehop? They have pretty well priced clearance servers for like 65$ and I think that's pretty good compared to dreamhost at 99$ starting off for the same thing. I'll call them tomorrow and figure out how they interpret their ToS. I think right off the bat you get 250gig HDD, 10TB of bandwidth a month. I can't alone fill the server up, that'd be cheating. I don't know who'd do that though. But again adult content is a must.

I'm liking singlehop more and more everyday. I hope they allow adult content or I'll just be kinda bummed.

Yeah, you're going to want to go much smaller.

I will but I chatted with [email protected] this Guy and he was pretty cool. He said he knew what 4chan was and he knew what adult content is. He just stated that it should probably be moderated extremely closely. and I agreed. There is nothing in the ToS about adult stuff as far as I read. As long as it's legal in the US or whatever country they're hosting in.

I will start off small but how small should I start for 30+ boards. I know I don't need the cheapo server but when I do it's there ready to gobble up my money.

You should start for one board.

But whatever, good luck to you anyways.

dreamhost wrote me back after I ask if I'd have to pay them extra so that they can set up imagemagick and everything that's on their shared or vps servers. They wrote back and said that everything that's on the lesser servers will be on the dedicated servers which makes me kind of happy.

I don't really see the reason to start off with one board, I'd much rather go all out and just plop them, or most of them down at once with a couple notes boards and a kereha. I know 4chan.org started out with just /b/ but that was a while ago.

The only thing I'm tripping on is people moderating that won't give out my info. I'll figure it out soon enough.

OK fine I'll go to sign up with dreamhost. rabble, rabble, rabble.

singlehop just seems too legal like they'd tell on you themselves.

I hosted with hostgator a couple years ago and I didn't have the internet for 3 months. Went to go check out the site and it was down. stupid internet posting things they shouldn't.

nearlyfreespeech seems a little too pricy for someone whose going to pay for this all by themselves. if I have 20gigs of data on a HD and had a monthly bandwidth of 10gigs it would come out to about 200 bucks. I don't think so. For that I could get a 1TB server with 12gigs of ram and 4 or so cores.

OK I just give in dreamhost. I'm out of energy on this front.

You aren't going to get more than 10 posts per board in the first year if you start with more than one. It isn't 2007 anymore.

Well I'm going to have a TGP as a side project. I'll have some time to sort through the boards and get my own CSS the way I want it.

I was working on a couple saved pages from sovietrussia.org and iichan but their boards aren't that current. I mean they're older versions of wakaba so figured I should just play around with the newest version of wakaba so I don't fudge something up using an older version.

I still didn't get an answer about how to allow different file types on a board other that the basic jpg, GIF, and PNG. kind of still confused on that front.

I know no one will really care for the first year, I'll do the vps thing and when it comes time then I'll do the dedicated server. I saw that encyclopedia dramatica was down for a little bit and figured I could fill that gap but they came back up a day later. must've just been server issues.

I still have to find out if dreamhost is cool with my über lame TGP.

Well I closed my account with godaddy. I emailed with some dreamhost Rep Guy and we chatted back and forth for some days prior and he told me that if I wanted to have a TGP I'd have to go dedicated and I said OK, let me cancel godaddy first.

So I guess I'm getting a dedicated. That problem is solved for now I guess. I shouldn't have to worry about much in the way of space. I'm so stoked. The only thing I'm not stoked about is that I have to wait for my domain to stop trying to transfer. I called domain and got that all worked out. I just can't wait to plop everything up in a couple days or so.
