Imageboards and Society in Japan (12)

So has 2ch and imageboard culture become an extremely well known place among the Japanese public recently as well? I'm trying to get a picture of how the commercialization and popularity (destruction) of what happened in the west compares to Japan.

Image boards are pretty much the main way people communicate in Japan, outside social networks like Twitter.

I know 2channel alone gets about 3.5 million posts every single day.

Suffice to say, they are a huge part of the mainstream culture there. They pioneered it, after all so it's been around longer than it has in the west.

2channel is not an imageboard.

Ah, I see. I guess the otaku that existed around the time of Ayashii World have disowned 2ch and moved on to more unknown places, just like us, is this correct?

Oops.

>just like us

I'm willing to bet that most people here haven't "disowned" 4chan. I'm only here because I like talking to people that I remember from earlier days in the image board world.

I have, the site became worthless in 2008 so far as i'm concerned. 7chan dies a year after than and was followed about six months later by krautchan. I won't mention where the cool people on the internet hang out currently, for the obvious reasons, but it certainly isn't fishchan. I'm willing to bet that a lot of other people here will attest to the fact that they gave up on naggartats a long time ago because it long since ceased to be an effective content delivery system. In it's heyday on could participate at maximum effort and be assured that whatever amount of quality you paid in to the system, you'd be paid back tenfold (at least). Those days are long since gone and it was pretty obvious that it couldn't last because ponzi schemes never do.

At least your measure of 2008 is more generous than most people's.

I still post simply because it's the main' image board. Quality has never been that much of a concern for me as far as 4chan is concerned. I just see it as something to read, and it's nice to refresh the page and see responses in near-real-time. The only thing that I have found disappointing is that moot seems to have largely outgrown anime, and over the past few years there appears to have been a strong effort to de-Wapanese' the site. I suppose this--along with the invasions that even `oldfags' attest to as 4chan's golden moments--led to the ruination of 4chan everyone now complains about.

Still, if you want good, anonymous discussion, there are plenty of good text boards out there. Sites like 4-ch and SAoVQ may be slow, but they're a good example of how anonymous boards can be fun and interesting without all the stigma associated with *chans.

>saovq is interesting

does saovq have some hidden boards? cause when i go to that site all is see is a bunch of boring shit. its no surprise the site is slow, who in their right mind would want to participate in such uninteresting, uncreative tripe? and the entire exact same collection of threads are on every single one of the weebs-only neet4lyfe english language boards out there. tohno, bun, etc, they're all packed with the same tedious crap.
modern weebism is not "fun and interesting", its a culture of maximum conformity and as a result it is entirely predictable and not worth looking twice at.

I don't think you have the right mindset for SAoVQ. I agree it's nothing spectacular, but it's basically another DQN board. It's not for deep discussions; it's to make AA jokes and basically hang out. The name of the site should have given that away, really.
Though there are other boards that aren't very clearly linked. AA Story and Creepy, for instance.

Maybe try the topical 4-ch boards. Or perhaps a pseudonymous board, like typical Western forums. It's possible that image and text boards simply aren't what you think they are.
