I would suggest Serissa, but seeing as that the creators are completely butthurt and spamming themselves on all the competition I suggest KusabaX if you liked Kusaba.

If you list all the in-house mods that keep their code private, sure there's a lot. Desuchan and ko-chan both have their own hacked wakaba boards, for example, and if you went down the list of all the sites on 2ch.us you'd probably find a lot more. It isn't a very useful list to compile though.

Perhaps it would be decent if two things were to happen:

  1. Someone who can actually code takes up the project (even for PHP, oh's code is horribly inefficient, and most of all lacking readability (much like the rest of kusaba does)).

Although, since you can only type with cruise control on, I hardly take your opinion seriously.

Note-avoid php-received this from bugtraq not too long ago:
Several vulnerabilitites were found in PHP:

  • PHP ships a vulnerable version of the PCRE library which allows for
the circumvention of security restrictions or even for remote code
execution in case of an application which accepts user-supplied
    regular expressions (CVE-2008-0674).
  • Multiple crash issues in several PHP functions have been
    discovered.
  • Ryan Permeh reported that the init_request_info() function in
sapi/cgi/cgi_main.c does not properly consider operator precedence
when calculating the length of PATH_TRANSLATED (CVE-2008-0599).
  • An off-by-one error in the metaphone() function may lead to memory
    corruption.
  • Maksymilian Arciemowicz of SecurityReason Research reported an
integer overflow, which is triggerable using printf() and related
    functions (CVE-2008-1384).
  • Andrei Nigmatulin reported a stack-based buffer overflow in the
FastCGI SAPI, which has unknown attack vectors (CVE-2008-2050).
  • Stefan Esser reported that PHP does not correctly handle multibyte
characters inside the escapeshellcmd() function, which is used to
sanitize user input before its usage in shell commands
    (CVE-2008-2051).
  • Stefan Esser reported that a short-coming in PHP's algorithm of
seeding the random number generator might allow for predictible
    random numbers (CVE-2008-2107, CVE-2008-2108).
  • The IMAP extension in PHP uses obsolete c-client API calls making
it vulnerable to buffer overflows as no bounds checking can be done
    (CVE-2008-2829).
  • Tavis Ormandy reported a heap-based buffer overflow in
pcre_compile.c in the PCRE version shipped by PHP when processing
    user-supplied regular expressions (CVE-2008-2371).
  • CzechSec reported that specially crafted font files can lead to an
overflow in the imageloadfont() function in ext/gd/gd.c, which is
part of the GD extension (CVE-2008-3658).
  • Maksymilian Arciemowicz of SecurityReason Research reported that a
design error in PHP's stream wrappers allows to circumvent safe_mode
checks in several filesystem-related PHP functions (CVE-2008-2665,
    CVE-2008-2666).
  • Laurent Gaffie discovered a buffer overflow in the internal
memnstr() function, which is used by the PHP function explode()
    (CVE-2008-3659).
  • An error in the FastCGI SAPI when processing a request with
multiple dots preceding the extension (CVE-2008-3660).

if you're determined to use PHP, upgrade to the latest version, though as you can see its track record isn't the best.

It's not the language that defines software as good or bad, it's the way it's coded. An obscene amount of popular websites are powered by PHP with no problems. However, Kusaba is a bad example of this.

51 Name: Anonymous : 2008-11-26 03:56 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>50

This is a fair point. The problem I think people have with PHP is the obscene amount of security problems it has when you compare it to something like Perl or Ruby. PHP can be used by popular websites, but popular does not equate to secure.

52 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-11-26 11:43 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>50

A lot of popular websites are powered by PHP with tons of problems, too. How many actively exploited holes have there been in Wordpress so far? phpBB?

Exploits aren't in PHP as a language, but the programs they're written in. I doubt there is a 100% secure Perl or Python program.

57 Name: Anonymous : 2008-12-01 15:39 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>56
lolwhat

there have been literally hundreds of exploits in the core language, and its plethora of misfeatures that it foists upon programmers make it much easier to write broken and exploitable code.
but as far as code written within the language, perl is fairly solid to write clean code in as it has features like 'use strict' and taint checking -- which can be extremely useful for double checking yourself and making sure that you're sanitizing the code (assuming you're not a dipshit, of course). php just has a kludgy "safe mode" that arbitrarily restricts and cripples the language whilst not providing reasonable resistance against anything, save keeping the most inexperienced script kiddies from writing php code on a broken free web host.

while python isn't as robust, python code is typically written in such a way that it's highly explicit and obvious. php code is typically written in such a way that it's a barely-readable spaghetti mess. (perl can be kind of a mess, but in my experience the average perl script is cleaner and better organized than the average php script.) i attribute this to the low barrier of entry for php, making it the leading language of choice for entry-level programmers, which is unfortunate because multi-user web client-server applications are not a realm where newbie code monkeys ought to be. there are a hell of a lot of different things to consider in any decent web app, and screwing up means a lot of people are at best inconvenienced, and at worst have sensitive data such as passwords or even credit card numbers compromised.

58 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2008-12-03 03:43 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>56

There have been plenty of exploits in PHP-as-a-language too, you know.

But even disregarding that, language and API design is very important. And PHP in many ways encourages insecure programming, by making secure programming hard to get right, and not obvious. The mysql functions are a prime example. They are incredibly, incredibly dangerous to use, and lots of tutorials for them do not adequately explain how to use them securely.

In contrast, languages like Perl and Python have database access functions which to a far greater extent promote secure programming.

Being that PHP is often written by very inexperienced programmer, this become a very dangerous combination, and we see the results in exploits in PHP programs all over the net all the time.

87 Name: Makoto!!QPpGvuVX : 2009-01-29 16:28 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>82

Yeah...no it doesn't. Mainly because reflinks rely on javascript to insert quoted post IDs and to alter the class the TD cell calls on to "highlight" a post, and the javascript required is mysteriously absent.

To quote myself here, futaba's codebase is completely absent of structure and readability. It's a spaghetti mess; such a mess that would require a complete re-write to fix. Sure, you can hack away if you really want to, but at the end of the day the code will still be just as bad (or even worse) than it was before.

I remember when I thought messing with futaba was cool. And then I learned how to program.

Anyways, at least you implemented res page caches. Dynamic threads for a script that prunes threads after a certain period is a dumb tax on CPU load.

I don't think Wakaba is the best, I feel there are features missing from it that I'd really like, that, and it's written in Perl, which my host doesn't support.

If Kusaba X tried to be less like Trevorchan then I would make it my first choice.

151 Name: Anonymous : 2011-08-16 19:17 ID:Heaven [Del]

Wakaba is the best because it does what it says on the box, has a decent subset of features, a sane default config and is dead simple to set up. Scripts like Tinyboard are nice, but are way too complicated to set up IMO, and encourage Kusaba-like incidents where 13-year-old boys download the script, install it on free hosting, create 40 or 50 boards and proclaim their site "the new 4chan".

On the other hand, Wakaba is terribly messy code-wise, and it really does make me wish there were better alternatives.

>and it's written in Perl, which my host doesn't support.

Your host sucks.

152 Name: GuyInABox!!ui/iypch : 2011-08-16 20:39 ID:KkOuq9SW [Del]

>>151
Maybe my host does suck, but the lack of Perl isn't a big loss for me anyway, since I prefer PHP.

I do have a Kusaba X powered website, with boards that are already on 4chan (only 5/6 boards, not counting the three crappily translated boards, including a secret mod board), although I just put up mine because I had nothing better to do, also, calling a site "The new 4chan", that's a good reason to avoid it.

>>151

>terribly messy code-wise

I invested in Wakaba because I was told the exact opposite. I was under the impression that Trevorchan-based boards were messier, and in effect were much slower and unstable. Am I misunderstand you?

154 Name: Anonymous : 2011-08-18 04:41 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>153
Most of it (the stuff you typically hack away on) is really clean and easy to read and understand, but wakautils.pl is black magic in its purest form. Here's an example:

if($name eq 'var') { $code.='$res.=eval{'.$args.'};' }
elsif($name eq 'const') { my $const=eval $args; $const=~s/(['\\])/\\$1/g; $code.='$res.=\''.$const.'\';' }
elsif($name eq 'if') { $code.='if(eval{'.$args.'}){' }
elsif($name eq 'loop')
{ $code.='my $__a=eval{'.$args.'};if($__a){for(@$__a){my %__v=%{$_};my %__ov;for(keys %__v){$__ov{$_}=$$_;$$_=$__v{$_};}' }

Looks pretty, right?

Trevorchan/Kusaba isn't particularly messy, but suffers from many other issues.

Would you care to explain to my grandmother how your imageboard software works? (Yes, your software, no one else than the creator would recommend such a horrible, buggy piece of autist-ridden crap.) Because I can't figure it out myself, and I consider myself pretty good with computers.

My grandmother aside, here's a small amount of things which are wrong with your software.

  • Doesn't resize thumbnails, simply uses width/height attributes.
  • Doesn't escape HTML characters properly, it merely strips away what it perceives to be complete HTML tags.
  • Shitty grammar and spelling.
  • Hard to use - how the fuck do you even create a thread?
  • What the fuck even constitutes a thread? There's one section for "threads" and one section for "topics", despite these meaning pretty much the same thing on forums.
  • GeoShitties style admin panel.
  • Requires magic quotes (if you had any clue what-so-ever, you wouldn't be using it)
  • Probably exploits and shit everywhere.
  • You take yourself and that piece of crap too seriously.
  • Using ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8.
  • Reply links and dates cover parts of the post.
  • Doesn't check for duplicate images.
  • Newlines entered in the comment field don't get parsed.

So how does your software "outbeat all the rest"?

Also, the funniest thing is that you don't even have a download link available. If you aren't going to offer downloads, why bother advertising it?

Hello thanks for all your negative comments, but thats what i would expect from MR VILE< lol,

"Since I understand this is the only canonical listing of imageboard scripts on the Internet I am going to take this opportunity to say that this software is a crock of shit and the author should stop posting it all over the fucking Internet like it's something more than babby's first PHP script. "

and yes to counter that i did get it plastered over the internet, why because its competition, thats why :D

What nation do you come from?? if i may ask? im from United Kingdom.

Here's a copy of your entire website, gathered through a PHP injection exploit in your software: http://www.mediafire.com/?kskmabs3ujlmajp

Now, who's the "baby in programming" again? Go fuck yourself.

Not in a million years.

>If you know any otherr vulnerabilities that would be good to know email me.

You really expect anyone to help you out with that attitude of yours? You've received tons of constructive criticism, which you've completely ignored, and you spam your shit site and software everywhere because you believe it's something "special".

>>1 Try wakaba, it seems to be the only non-crappy one. EVERYONE raves about it. Only downside is that it runs on perl. And most free hosts dont support perl.

219 Name: Anonymous : 2012-01-08 18:27 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>218
Huh? Just about every host ever supports Perl!
You pretty much need CGI support for any sort of dynamic website, and Perl is basically the `default' CGI language. It would probably be more effort for a host to go through and remove CGI.pm from their Web server.

>>219 incorrect not all hosts support Perl

221 Name: Anonymous : 2012-01-09 19:13 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>219
there are some particularly crappy free hosts that support php, and not any other sort of dynamic content.
there are a lot more free hosts that do support perl, tho.
of course, if you're going to be setting up an imageboard for more than about 10 people (which is extremely unlikely), you should probably not use a free host.

>>221
and now there is apparently a solution for people who insist on using those particularly crappy hosts: http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1256252904/86

Yea, because we need to see the demand, seriously this is BSD licence etc, unless there is a specialist place in which the files can be stored, and a Download count can be verified, any suggestions appreciated, cheers.

If you want to test this out, please check out http://rateitstar.com and create a topic, it will be have to be approved or http://music.rateitstar.com, and tell me what you think cheers guys.

Also, no one is going to email you to get their hands on a crock-of-shit script which has caused your website to be compromised multiple times. There are plenty of imageboard scripts out there which are much better than yours will ever be.

Anonymous message board server made in Erlang, designed with high load, scalability and extensibility in mind. The forum layout concept is designed to be familiar for wakaba users:

site → boards → threads → posts → images and text
posts have monotonically increasing ids, one counter per board
name field is optional, supports special hash tags for identifying without discovering the user's identity
post body uses special markup which is processed to HTML

doushio looks neat.

What are the mature imageboards that don't use mysql / pgsql? can sqlite power a "non webscale" board?
I've been looking for a danbooru-like that doesn't suck but the landscape is pretty sparse...
