"Create your own imageboad"? (50)

For those of us who are put out by anonIB's current closure, is there any alternative to anonIB out there? In other words, is there a free (or, alternatively, very cheap) method of getting your own imageboard?

2 Name: Anonymous : 2008-04-27 16:22 ID:Heaven [Del]

God, I hope not.

Pay for a host and either

  • Install Wakaba on it
  • Code an imageboard yourself

AnonIB was shit.

Or don't host one altogether.

There's plenty enough imageboards as it is. Look around on 2ch.us first, chances are there's already at least a couple boards with whatever you're making a board for. If you can't find an existing board, then consider either (a) finding a site you like and asking them to add a board, or as a last resort, THEN host your own.

... well clearly I got distracted while writing that post; it was supposed to have more sentences in it.

>>3 here, I'd have to agree with this. As far as imageboards go, I doubt there are many original boards left to choose from.

I think making your own imageboard is a great idea! 4chan is full of 13 year olds and soon so will all the other major chans - the internet is mainstream now accept it.

I think there will be more boards catering to nice interets in the future.

Would it be possible to host your own textboard on webspace such as what is provided for personal use by universities?

12 Name: Anonymous : 2009-01-20 16:33 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>11
If they allow cgi and it isn't stupendously crippled, and there's no agreement that you had to sign saying you wouldn't do anything like that, why not?

13 Name: Anonymous : 2009-01-20 16:53 ID:jhhYek7d [Del]

Most universities will give you just enough space for a text file. Unless you want to stick with a stripped down version of futaba, I'd recommend just buying hosting.

And isn't the space given by uni's normally only viewable by the person they are provided for?

14 Name: Anonymous : 2009-01-20 17:05 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>13
What.

My university didn't have any space limit (I was hosting tons of huge stuff like a full Slackware ISO), and how can you possibly strip Futaba down more than it is?

And what on earth would be the point of web hosting that only you can see?

15 Name: Anonymous : 2009-01-20 20:25 ID:Heaven [Del]

There is nothing a free webhost and wakaba/kareha cannot satisfy. I do not know why people are so adamant about only using wakaba/kareha and yet, NOT using it at all to make your own.

Fact of the matter is, as time goes by, they will scatter, there will be more an more. And as that happens, others will be abandoned.

To be honest, I don't know where this ideology about having a small centralized super imageboards being better than small scattered niche imageboards are better came from.

Hint: it starts with a '4' and ends in an 'n'.

Look at any anime-related site's forum, and you will always see a "general discussion" forum and an "general anime" forum and so on. People seem to believe they HAVE to offer EVERYTHING so that people will never need to go anywhere ELSE for discussion.

Free hosts and cgi scripts don't tend to mix well, nor do free hosts and user-submitted content.

he obviously hasn't realized yet that the bee got there from someone running their own code on his server. which is very bad.

Its easy to make your own imageboard, Just get a free host and pick a script.

35 Name: Lord Pentium!PG1mP76kIY : 2009-03-24 14:28 ID:87/kzVBR [Del]

>>34
Not quite that easy, bro. You have to pick the right free host, one that supports the necessary scripting language (for example, if you want to run Wakaba or Kareha, nxserve.net is pretty good, but I've known other host sites that can't run Perl, also Wakaba needs SQL databases, so you'll want hosting with MySQL support for that...). And then you have to pick the right script for what you want to do (Kusaba and derivatives are generally not good for imageboards that attempt to fill a particular niche, while Wakaba isn't as good for massive sites with many boards, though who really needs that other than big sites I don't know). And then there's getting users for it, especially if it's a niche imageboard... There's a whole bunch of considerations that need to be thought out before making a board, if only I had known to think that stuff out before I went in, maybe 71chan wouldn't be stuck in that stage where the only poster is the spambot from tkwr.free.fr, and maybe I wouldn't have spent a month bumbling around with no real purpose and no niche chosen.

> And then there's getting users for it, especially if it's a niche imageboard...

That is a question you should already have answered well in advance of deciding to start a board. "If you build it, they will come" does not apply.

Yeah, I said they need to be thought out BEFORE making a board, something I learned the hard way. Of course, now that mine's up, it would be dishonorable to just give up on it, so I have to keep it going, even if I have to turn into what I hate most (4chan-style Anonymous or complete spamfag) to do so.

38 Name: Anonymous : 2009-03-26 18:40 ID:Heaven [Del]

I'm planning to start my own private board for my country, but I have no experience with codes whatsoever, and that image board 4 free site is dead, and to be honest it does not appeal to me. Since I have no knowledge on any programming/coding, where can I hire someone to set up a board for me? I would be most grateful.

www.yourspiff.com allows you to create free Kusaba X boards.

46 Name: Anonymous : 2010-04-04 08:39 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>45

Yourspiff.com also allows one to delete everyone's boards through a random exploit. Or at least it did when it used Wakaba. With Kusaba X, who knows what's possible now?

47 Name: Anonymous : 2010-04-04 18:50 ID:oSkVGWlz [Del]

>>46
Yes yourspiff shitty v1 did allow this years ago. This was a simple fix, and yourspiff has since been completely rewritten. If you don;t want free board hosting, go buy your own server.
