Since the forum is anonymous and unregistered users can post, how can these types of forum differentiate whether the posts are by machines or humans?

There are a number of simple tricks that can be employed that stop the vast majority of spambots dead in their tracks. Form fields hidden with CSS, a confirmation screen after making the first post, and plain old moderation.

okay, I didn't know that. :)

another question: if I want to have an anonymous forum like this, is there anything wrong with using a familiar forum software like phpbb? (I reckon most people are more familiar with phpbb-style forums.)

What are the main differences between the software that powers this site and say, phpbb?

This one doesn't clutter up every screen with a million useless trinkets and knobs. It doesn't hide every message behind multiple mouse clicks. And it lets you post without bumping threads.

>>5 it's not like there's a huge learning curve with these boards. Certainly there are some functions that aren't immediately obvious but just link to a "secrets of"-page. They'll all click on it since nobody can resist a secret (promise!).

Most of the people who go to these places don't find it fun to spam anyway.

>>5 No crappy avatars, no annoying signatures, no private messages (that's what email's for). In general, good threads stay alive, while bad threads sink away. Easy to use. Less resource-intensive than phpBB (doesn't even require SQL if you're using kareha).

>>9 Thanks. But is the admin panel user-friendly, like for deleting spam and general maintenance work? I can't find a demo installation at opensourcecms.com.

It is if it works...and it's rather annoying if you have a large number of posts. I just added the ability to delete any post from the main page using the admin password.
