Chapter 130

Howdy,

In a bid to get to the cheesecake sooner, the elves have stepped it up a notch. Chapter 130 is now available over at:

http://www.cafealpha.org/

The annonymous elves always appreciate thanks.

Best,

Dave

Thanks, elves for another mysterious chapter.

I'm wondering about the almost shadowless bright light in this chapter, even when it's full night. Surely the moon plus the light from the windows is not that bright?

And the moon seems to be growing more rings as the night deepens. It would take pretty sophisticated engineering for Alpha to have exactly the same response to light as humans, so I'm not surprised she can see more. I guess the added rings are Ashinano's way of showing the reader what Alpha sees.

And Takahiro might "come crying home"?

Anyhoo, that moon thing is really weird...why are there rings, anyways?

A huge thanks to the elves for this chapter!

This chapter probably has the greatest affirmation of Alpha's "humanity" in the series. I am refering to Alpha's admission of loneliness, as well as her worry about seeing the world a little differently from humans. It is as if she worries if she is "real" or not, when she asks (in the elvess translation), "Ojisan, what I see is really real, right?"

This feeling of doubt and anxiety is something, that I would have never attributed to Alpha before this chapter. But Ojisan's answers to both comments are the best. What a great friend.

This may be one of the best YKK chapter ever. Wow, I am still thinking about it.

Thanks for the gem.

You Elves are working hard to good effect. Thank You! Thank You!

Of course, rings around the moon are actually an illusion. They are as "real" as rainbows.

It may be worth noting that Zen Buddhism has a very extensive literature on various aspects of the moon. Much of the literature has to do with the reality and unreality of these various aspects.

If your interested you might start by googling on,
"zen moon koan" .

Great work as always. It's one thing to look at the chapters in Afternoon as I buy them and another to actually read them and wonder. So thanks for the hard work.

I'm feeling a little guilty about bringing up Chapter 133 now. I don't want you and Galen to feel rushed about this.

Howdy,

Nah, don't sweat it. Scans float around the net and people are going to find them if they want. My only concern was that people would spoil some of their enjoyment by reading 133 before 131.

As for the current pace of releases, the elves are just trying to get caught up to the current chapter, that's all.

Best,

Dave

Man it doesn't seem like it's been six years since that Typhoon struck. I wonder if they're not showing Makki for a reason. Will she look different the next time we see her? And will the Tapon be making a return visit to Alpha's side of the Earth? Hopefully in future chapters Nai will make a return appearance. We've already had Ayase now all we need are updates on Nai, Takahiro, Sensei, the crew of the Tapon, and Misago.

It seems like this chapter is one of those the world is definately dying chapters again. The last time we had those was the last time we saw Sensei and the time Ojisan wanted Alpha to move her shop to his gas station. It's starting to look as though Alpha knows she's not going to have the people she knows and loves around her for much longer. The older people will die and the younger ones will leave for the cities. Alpha's either going to stay where she is or she'll wander again. And maybe if she wanders again she'll take Kokone with her.

Elves are real hardworkers... I hope they don't go on strike....

Beatiful, gorgeus chapter, and not because of the moon... but for all the subtle links and implications that, as always, Ashinano leaves for us to interpret...

Reading how Apha wonders if what she sees is the real realitity, I could not but think of Ayase asking whether people is not seeing what they wanto to see.

And Ojisaan linking old age with the desire of solitude somehow contradicts his awkward approach to Sensei in chapter 116... though he can refer to the feelings of bitterness and mistrust after living too much... something that Alpha has not experienced yet...

And, some hard facts too, that between chapter 62 and 130 six years have passed, roughly... time seems to go at the same pace, inside and outside the comic...

And of course that robots have been designed to be oversensitive/overperceptive compared to nornal human beings... though that was there from the very beginning, as Alpha and Kokone's reaction to music showed in a very early chapter...

The next chapter is a big one for Makki.

There seems to be some confusion; I'm not an elf. Actually, at the time I scanned the pages, I wasn't aware of any translations past Misago's work. I ordered a random copy of Afternoon from Sasuga to ship with my volume 13 so I could check it out, and the pages were there so I scanned them. It was only after I put the pages on my filedrop that someone told me about here.

Ahhh, an excellent chapter. Many thanks!

I read her confession of loneliness and I remember Kokone's private wish to live here... I can't help it, I hope those two wishes find each other...

Alpha's never seemed indifferent to the presence or absence of people, but I guess she hasn't mentioned it to anyone else much. O-jisan is of course a stand-up guy. Thanks again to the elves!

More brilliant Ashinano goodness brought to our gaijin understanding by the elves... many thanks where and whoever you all are...

I'll second that comment about Kokone's desire to live with Alpha matching up with Alpha's desire to no longer live alone... It would be nice to see them together. The question I have is if Alpha can live there much longer. The shop may be back in shape, but the ground is giving way. So maybe it's not Kokone that should live with Alpha, but Alpha that should live with Kokone.

It's been a long time since we've seen Takahiro or Maruko, too.

After reading chapter 129 and 130 (Thanks elves!) I got the feeling that Kokone is becoming more like Alpha while Alpha becomes more like Kokone.

Six years already since the typhoon? Jeez...

Looks like Ashinano wants to show us that we are getting older too... :-/

i think ykk is fascinating.

i mean, it still feels relaxing when i read it.

i would like to see more about the "dark places" of the ykk world. (i can remember some chapter named "dark water" or somezthing like that.)
that would be interesting.

chapter 130 was my favorite.

and position 6 and 7.

Oh, wow... these last few chapters have been downright amazing.

As to Ojisaan's comments:
"And Ojisaan linking old age with the desire of solitude somehow contradicts his awkward approach to Sensei in chapter 116... "

Given the kind of ... vaguely-defined relationship Sensei and Ojisaan have had over the years, it wouldn't surprise me to see him not really acting his age with her, resuming the role of kouhai to her sempai [lowerclassman to her upperclassman] rather than staying in their roles as community elders (or at least oldsters) among Alpha, Takahiro, Makki, and (most of) the rest. Seeing the moon having three rings at the end makes me think that last frame was from Alpha's perspective while the others were from a human's.

Is that a validation of a robot's view? Have we been viewing the YKK world from a robot's or a human's perspective for the last decade? Did Ashinano-sensei somehow read this forum and see the posting that the moon is rarely seen in YKK and wanted to rectify that ? ^_^

Ah! What a great chapter, so much to think about!
