Alpha's OOBE flying has been brought up a few times over the course of the manga... what is interesting is that in one of the early manga chapters Takahiro claims to have seen her! (However, he didn't recognise her at all).

Okay, so is she really flying or not? There's sensei's boat, Nai's plane, the incident with Takahiro, the night she got drunk... There's been several instances of her either physically flying or her spirit is soaring. It's so hard to tell. And how does all this tie in to Director Alpha and her never-ending flight?

There has to be something very important about Alpha's flight abilities that will show up in a later chapter. It seems that now she's fully aware of it and what causes it because she says she does it a lot. I think it has more to do with engines than it does with the mouth cord. She didn't have the mouth cord yet she had her hand on her scooter when it happened. I'm bginning to think that Alpha can use any engine to create the experience of flying not just jet engines, like on the boat, or airplane engines. Plus, I wonder if it's only Alpha who can do this or if the other robots can do it as well and just don't know about it yet. This chapter raises a lot of questions.

Apparently, the word for this state is "bilocation". It describes someone who is in two places at once.
It's not unusual for one of the locations to be a meditative state and the other to be flying or floating in some manner. Various Catholic saints are said to have been able to do this, particularly Padre Pio, a 20th century Italian priest who is said to have helped airmen survive falls from disabled aircraft during world war II. I recall hearing about Hindu mystics that were supposed to bilocate but I've forgotten the names and situations.
To me, Alpha's situation is more reminesant of the Firesign Theater's quote, which I believe was, "How can you be in two places at once, when your not anywhere at all?" Since she is, in fact, a fictional person.

I'm also reminded Derrida's "pharmakon", since Alpha's true state remains undecided.

I think Alpha's flight is yet another dream of her of being something better. As a robot, logically she should not be able to do anything out of ordinary, thanks for her never-growing structure.

This makes me wonder about what the "other" method of developing the A7s involved. Sensei's group seemed to record sensations to implant but the M recordings were music and sounds... things that cause reactions maybe? Hmmm then why did Alpha and ....(why did I have to forget her name now?) have the same reaction to the sugar?
I think that's where the flying might have spawned from. The robots have shown that they're beyond programming otherwise Shiba would have brought up something along those lines when she and Kotone were talking about Alpha and Kotone's overall interaction with other people. Maybe they're developing in a new way since time isn't as heavy of a factor for them. Physically at least.

I got the same kind of reaction with lemon and sour stuff in general. In my opinion, it is simply a flaw of some A7 bots in the way they mimic human (Kokone rulez :)
