YKK Forum

Conventions being attended & other face-to-face opportunities.

Seeing how there are knots of YKK fans in various parts of the world, it seems like a good idea to have somewhere for people to note what conventions they'll be attending next.

Other face-to-face opportunities would also belong here.

To kick things off, I'll next be at Swancon XXX, in Perth, Western Australia over Easter.

The swan figures in Anglo-Australian mythology, right?

I'm attending Paragon2, the British Eastercon at the end of March in Hinckley. I'll be giving a short series of talks about SFnal themes in Japanese anime and manga. Guess what anime I'll be featuring in the "ecological disaster" panel?

If it goes well I'll try and repeat the program items in the Worldcon in Glasgow in August.

The swan does not *exactly* feature in Anglo-Australian myth. Except in the topic of beer. Not very good beer. Swan Brewery and all that. Oh, and sailing, I suppose. Alan Bond (former owner of the brewery in question), Australia II, and so on.

The Black Swan, however does lend its name to the Swan River (and, incidentally, the brewery), which runs through the middle of Perth. Hence, Swancon.

If you can ever make it to Perth, try to get to one of our Cons. Swancon (usually near Easter) is the largest, but still has a reputation for being friendly. We also have Genghiscon at the end of January, and another one (with varying names) October/November. GCon is a very informal and fun con. By contrast the Spring convention tends towards the literary.

Last year also saw our first anime con (WAI-Con) - which proved to be about 2-3 times the size of Swancon! We'll see if they decide to do another.

So many cons ... so little time...
