Question on ch.44 for dDave and dn.

On pages 16-18
http://ykk.misago.org/Volume6/16
there are quite a important dialogue between Dir. Alpha and mop lady.

Unfortunately, current translation doesnt have a clear sense there, and it's opposite from MP's.

Can you check it in the same way you've done on previous volumes? Or maybe you can tell where to look at original text?

I'm doing translation into Russian using yours and MP's translations, and trust you better =), but those pages really pissing me off...

Especially:
p.17 pan.1:
There are sentence that cities are "suddenly vanishing" - anywhere else in manga there are no such statements, MP saying that "we just passed over town and it is quite scattered" - sounds better, but is it right translation?

p.16 pan.2:
Аnd "things are going worse" against "I cant see anything wrong"

Howdy,

I would translate it something like this:

On the previous page, the old lady says

"How is it? Down there."

PAGE 16
PANEL ONE

Director Alpha:
"mmm...."
"I want to say "as always", but...

PANEL TWO

Director Alpha:
"It seems to be getting worse"
"At far I can see from here"

Mop Lady
"hmmmm"

PAGE 17

PANEL ONE

Director Alpha:
"Things like towns suddenly vanishing... here and there"
"But..."

PANEL TWO

Directory Alpha:
"How should I put this... it's like..."

PANEL THREE

Director Alpha:
"It doesn't feel as bad as it was before or something..."

Mop Lady:
"Somehow, I know what you mean"

PAGE 18

PANEL ONE

Mop Lady
"Mm, but fer us"
"There's no way fer us ta make sure"

Director Alpha
"Yeah"

PANEL TWO

Director Alpha
"Whatever happens down there, there's nothing we can do but watch"

Mop Lady
"Being up here and all, we got no right to say nothin"

Hope this helps.

Best,

Dave

Howdy,

A couple notes:

I have found Neil's translations to be very good overall. He is a little more loose in his translations, I tend to be a little more literal, but that is just an style issue - not an accuracy issue.

I didn't look at Neil's translation when I did mine, so hopefully that will give you a better comparison.

Some of the phrases in those pages were really hard to translate. I'm not surprised that there are differences.

Many of Ashinano's characters have funky accents which are hard to translate.

Best,

Dave

[v6, p17] panel 1
You don't need "suddenly" if you use "vanish". (You may want "suddenly" if you use "disappear".)

You might add "from time to time".

[v6, p16] panel 1
I would translate it like:
"As usual, (no,) I mean..."

[v6, p18] panel 2, Mop Lady's line
I agree with misago.org's translation:
"Not that we can complain."
