That being said, you can probably fix the problem if you also change while($lines[0]!~/^(?:\s*$|1\. |[\*\+\-] |>| |\t)/) { push @text,shift @lines; } to while($lines[0]!~/^(?:\s*$|1\. |[\*\+\-] |>)/) { push @text,shift @lines; }.
