SHOCKING NIJIURA NEWS (99)

1 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-05-31 14:30 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

I just now noticed that the original /b/, Futaba's Nijiura board, has been RESET! Post numbers in the twenty millions, WIPED OUT!

All of this, apparently, to move it to a new server, may.2chan.net, and to upgrade the script to a newer version that supports image replies. Furthermore, it appears Toshiaki is back.

As of right now, post numbers are in the 139000s, so I guess this happened fairly recently, no more than a couple of days back. What will become of the biggest board of them all?

Discuss!

I wonder who 2GOT.

3 Name: Anonymous 2005-05-31 14:59 ID:OFaE644x [Del]

Is it now going to be the only futaba board with image reply?

Considering the thread turnover rate, I don't think they'll skip a beat.

4 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-05-31 15:32 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

Several boards have had image replies for some time... They've been adding them as they go along. The first board to get them was the own art board, I think, just over a year ago. That was right when I was initially developing Wakaba, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea or not to add image replies.

5 Name: Anonymous 2005-05-31 15:58 ID:Heaven [Del]

zOMG this means 4chan's /b/ will have the upper hand for some time!

7 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-01 03:41 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

For a week or two... Actually, I'm going to see just how many posts per day that board gets now.

8 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-01 14:28 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

Well, 24 hours later, and post numbers are in the 175000:s. That's 36000 posts in 24 hours, or one every 2.4 seconds. At that rate, it'll catch up with 4chan's 1.4 million in just over a month.

9 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-01 14:41 ID:fZoPbPZY [Del]

>>8

Well wait then. At that rate, how long should it would it have taken to reach 20,000,000 posts?

10 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-02 02:00 ID:Heaven [Del]

Seems like the post count has been restored or something.
At least right now I see posts with numbers exceeding 25 million.

11 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-02 04:34 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

Actually, no, it just looks like the old board is still up, but unlinked. Except, of course, from all the alternative 2chan navigators.

The new board is at http://may.2chan.net/b/futaba.htm, while the old is at http://img.2chan.net/b/futaba.htm.

i didn't notice anything in the configuration files for Futallaby for adding image replies, so i added that feature (with my ability to use Copy and Paste). i still have some cosmetic spacing issues to address, but other than that it works okay.

the thumbnails in image replies are set to be exactly half the size of whatever the thumbnail size is set to in the configuration file. if you change the configuration file to allow larger thumbnails, the previously generated image reply thumbnails probably won't look very good, as they'll be stretched out.

i can't find any licensing information for Futallaby anywhere in its distribution; however, seeing as the code is instantly downloadable, i don't think they'll have a problem with me offering these changes.

if anyone's interested, feel free to email me.

Self-promotion!

OR, you could use a script that already does all that, and was written properly from the ground up.

i agree with you; i think we should have used Wakaba. the board administrator grabbed the first board script he found, which happened to be at the bottom of 4chan's pages, and configured it. he asked me if it was possible to do image replies, and i wanted an excuse to learn a little PHP, so i told him i'd do it. nothing against the work others have done to make better imageboard scripts.

i'll have to see if Futallaby's SQL tables are similar to Wakaba's, if we move to that in the future...

19 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-04 18:06 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

I think a simple translation of column names, and adding default values for any columns that might not exist, should be enough. You may need to change the parent value to be explicitly 0 for thread start posts too... I haven't looked too closely at the futaba table layout.

20 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-06 11:09 ID:iLwdBXYZ [Del]

Well...

I'll be damned! A third /b/! Unknown to many of us for... years?

http://dat.2chan.net/b/futaba.htm

21 Name: 20 2005-06-06 12:09 ID:Heaven [Del]

Oh, wait. Actually, that's the first /b/, from before they switched to img.2chan.net
So the old /b/s were never taken down, Futaba just doesn't link to them from the portal anymore... And yet people still post to them. As massively as ever...

Together, the three /b/s of Futaba have about 56,000,000 posts, as of now.
And that's just crazy.

22 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-06 12:56 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

Oh god. That's utterly crazy.

I hypothesize that there is an upper limit on posting speed which is independant of the number of people posting, and is determined by the speed at which a page can be reloaded and read, and replies typed.

When you hit this saturation point, splitting the board in two will lead to a large increase in the total number of posts made, as the posts that would have never been made due to the board being saturated can now be posted.

23 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-06-06 13:07 ID:B2aU1t/c [Del]

Currently the dat board is getting about 943 posts an hour, corresponding to 22632 posts a day. This is likely inaccurate since posting rates do vary over the day. So it's slightly lower than the newest nijiura, after being unlinked for... how long?

I really need to make some tools for measuring posting speeds.

24 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-06 13:18 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>23

I bet there are already tools like that...

Also, there ARE places linking to the other /b/s... like http://njtown.fc2web.com/frame.html for instance. I also suspect the Toshiaki having some sort of individual browsing interface for Futaba.

25 Name: Anonymous 2005-06-07 02:24 ID:Heaven [Del]

One might also notice that the name field got reintroduced for the may.2chan.net /b/

Does anyone know what this says?

> 08/09 前日8日の時点でWinnyユーザーをターゲットとしたトロイの木馬、キンタマウィルスに二次裏may掲示板をターゲットとするものが現れ、高負荷がかかったことから、二次裏may掲示板のurlを変更する。

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%B5%E3%81%9F%E3%81%B0%E2%98%86%E3%81%A1%E3%82%83%E3%82%93%E3%81%AD%E3%82%8B#2005.E5.B9.B4

I believe it explains the weird URL changing for the may Nijiura board.

37 Name: Anonymous 2005-10-15 05:55 ID:Heaven [Del]

maybe:

URL of "may" nijiura was changed because the Winny "kintama" trojan was targeting the board, and causing high server load.

38 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-10-15 06:05 ID:Heaven [Del]

Something about a Winny virus targetting may, I think.

47 Name: !PGjrfwPI5Q : 2006-09-30 16:53 ID:lxfbQqlg [Del]

What the...
This is so really wrong.

I was thinking... the board could be distributed with DNS round-robin like nij.2chan.net A x.y.z.1 x.y.z.2 x.y.z.3 etc; but for all of them to have the same content posting would still be needed to go to a central "master" server which MAY become a bottleneck later...

I had the idea some time ago to write an "AJAX" imgboard script and I think that'd be the ultimate scalable:
* Board HTML, JS, CSS initially load from DNS r-r webservers,
* The AJAX script knows about all the servers and queries all of them periodically for posts,
* When posting, it just submits to the r-r, i.e. random server
The point here is that all servers only have the posts that landed there not EVERY post.

Now, ordering of posts will not be preserved and numbering posts in order becomes impossible (without reintroducing the bottleneck)...
So posts would be numbered with GUIDs; maintaining a vague total post count of course is still fine.

Is this worth doing? There aren't many boards that really need such a thing... yet?!

PS. DoS of an individual server is still possible, the AJAX script should maybe query the r-r for updated servers' list so servers can be taken out and then DoS causes NO OUTAGE!

What do you all think? Are GUID numbered posts too much for scalability?

BTW, I AM getting "Abnormal reply." until I select "Text Art" formatting... (;O_o)

49 Name: Anonymous : 2006-10-01 07:14 ID:74Xjn56T [Del]

>>47
While i dont really understand the reasoning behind AJAX imageboards, i would say, sure go for it to be the first behind it and then work on everything once u have the base. GUID's dont really work for a single imageboard, because essesstinally i can understand it as, its like the same imageboard, but run at difference places yet has different content. So why not just run a linked imageboard and save some hassle?
...
Yep i dont really know what im talking about

It's mind-boggling to think that in a little over two years 4chan's /b/ has gone from 1.4 mil to 35.4 mil. Meanwhile may is up to 50.6.

57 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-09 00:00 ID:Heaven [Del]

Consider this -- not only does 2chan have those 50-some million posts on may, there's also jun, nov, tmp, dat, and img. Combine them all, and you're at nearly 130 million. And that's not even considering that all the other (non-/b/) boards have tons of posts as well.

We are >>65's courtiers.
We are sorry that our lord has created such a stupid post.
After the last war we had completely lost, our lord got mental illness.
Everyday, he kidnaps girls from the village.
Every night he gets drunk and tries to chop courtiers with his katana.
Now the lady of the house is ill in bed.
The people in our country are suffering badly from famine.
The neighboring Daimyos is taking advantage of this situation,
they try to pass across the border and take over our land.
Quite a few of our fellow courtiers have intention to rise in rebellion.
We are now in dire straits. Our clan would be destroyed.
But, don't worry. We arranged that our Lord become a Buddhist priest.
On his way to the temple, our skilled assassin will take his life.
That is arranged perfectly. After that we will hail Master Monaminokami,
the nephew of our lord, as our new lord.
We, all courtiers, would do our best to serve this new lord with faith.
We apologize for any inconvenience our lord may have caused you.
Please wait for a while. Please forgive the evil deeds done by our lord.
