Time to see how OLD-SCHOOL we all are. Post the name of your oldest *chan image!
One of the oldest I can find is 1048418929378.png. http://wakaba.c3.cx/tools/timestamp.pl?timestamp=1048418929378.png says "Sun Mar 23 11:28:49 2003".
I see one 1041* image, but that is so much earlier than everything else, I suspect I got it through some third party.

I am currently trying to build myself a similiar function in PHP that is supposed to fetch some dates and turn them into UNIX stamps and vice versa. Does anyone know where reasonable and understandable tutorials for that could be found or, even better, just tell me straight how this could be achieved?

Looks to me like you want the localtime(), date() and mktime() functions, in some combination.

the oldest i have on this computer is 1073048905583.jpg (from 4chan's /c/), but i have some much older ones (i think i have on that starts with 103) on my other computer... i'll check later...
It seems like Futaba didn't have any imageboards before Feb 02, 2003, though.
Earliest is 1041906950371.jpg but I probably got it from elsewhere.
1062063456244.jpg seems genuine.
1082778467817.jpg is Sat Apr 24 03:47:47 2004. which is the oldest for me.
