mushishi+zettai shonen

i have been watchign mushishi and zettai shonen lately on peoples reccomendations here. I totally love the mysterious and slow paced stories, and theme of finding magic in the mundane. It speaks to me very profoundly in a way that really is reminicent of my first time through YKK manga. im thinking of watching the YkK ova but i think it might somehow lessen my impression of the manga so i dont think i will.
its a great year for anime in my mind anyway cause they are releasing some real astounding classics like these two.
any more reccomendations? its scarey to think you aren't aware of such great things eh?

Haven't watched Mushishi yet, but Zettai Shonen has it's charm. For "magic in the mundane" (or "mundane magic" perhaps more appropriately) I've been enjoying Windy Tales, although only six eps have been fansubbed so far--sorry if it's been mentioned before, but I only keep track of this forum sporadically.

some people here said they didn't like the second season of zettai shonen as much but im enjoying it just as much so far. Same appeal holds to different characters.
ill investigate windy tales

only other reccomendation here is fantastic children- found in this forum. I dont know this one sounds meh...... should i give it a shot?
i can't find any other reccomendations here in the forum, but some necessary ones in my mind are haibane renamei, NieA, and Lain (lain being the same kind of slow pace but very dark, especially contrast to lain and haibane)

I'm also watching Mushishi and I have to recommend it too :-).

Aside from this show, I'd recommend Haibane Renmei, Windy Tales and Emma (a very nice slice-of-live anime).
About Fantastic Children: I watched it and liked it too. I think, it has a good and epic storytelling.

Fantastic Children was fine. It came recommended, and although it wasn't really my cup of tea in the end, it wasn't a bad show at all. Character designs are very old school, but that isn't what turned me off. It's heavy on plot, and yet I often found that the story dragged. It's too complex for 13 eps, but really could have been something like 20, if that was a format they made for shows.

I'd personally much rather recommend Windy Tales and Emma and Mushishi, which are all very good and have been described at length on a couple of threads here. The YKK OVA's, of course, are also very good, and not to be missed.

Also, gene,
there's another thread here called "A Most Wonderful Anime" a few threads down, and it has a lot of recommendations, with discussion, plus there's the "Zettai shounen" thread and the "Aria, the Animation" thread. So, there's definitely some recommendations on this board. If you go to those threads, the general list will go something like-- Kamichu, Air, Kino's Journey, Emma, Aria, Fantastic Children, Windy Tales, Mushishi, Zettai Shounen, etc.

There are lots of good recommendations, if you fish around. Good luck!

ok im thinking about what mushishi is about.
its seems so magical and primal which is clearly what they are going for so i thought about the underlying themes:
sensation, perception, and creation. (well ive only seen the first three eps but those themes come through clearly).
it is about primal life and so it creates magical stories and creatures at the base of human experience.
its really quite spectacular the more i think about it.

thinking about kino no tabi- it seems more about fables, that teach kino about different aspects of life by exposing extremes. i really liked the way they made kino so passive. Its like kino has a prime directive: kino can observe but not effect change. I love one quote from the episode with the tower: "i dont know if you are crazy or if its the world thats insane"....

-haibane renamei- so amazing so much subtext and subtlety woven into complex symbols. If i think about it enough i can see symbolism in almost every aspect of it. Ex. ok so what is the wall? the town? the townspeople? Their jobs? each character can symbolize something and their names and dreams give clues to the nature of that world. Ive been thinking about it alot and haven't come close to figuring this one out.

Okay, trying not to repeat anything already suggested:

Ocean waves - Slice of life about teen romance

Omoide Poro Poro - About a city girl's visit to her country past

Oseam - Two orphans fostered by monks

Manga: Hotaru's Forest, Hotaru no Mori - A young girl and a ghost

Not as tranquil as YKK, but I see they are starting to fansub "Daddy Long-legs", which was originally a wonderful story by Jean Webster, a grand-niece of Mark Twain. Available at Project Gutenberg. And also made into a couple of movies. I have a Chinese version of the anime with the usual awful translation.

Here's the URL of the original "Daddy Long-legs" story:
www.gutenberg.org/etext/157

The anime is pretty close to the story, which is not very long. The anime has some American songs sung in Japanese - pretty strange to hear.

More "atmospheric" anime: "Angels' Egg" movie, "Shingetsutan Tsukihime" (Moon Princess). Not relaxing like YKK, but Angel's Egg got me thinking for weeks. Love the opening of Tsukihime. Great soudtrack.

yeah, angels egg is good. but fact is...nobody knows what happened in the ending.

i read reviews about that movie. they say, the ship in the beginning of the movie is noah's ark. that would fit into the story's ending...
