Shameless Plug - Blog of a Yokohama Shopping Trip

DaveTheSpork and I have started a YKK blog since it's something we can devote a lot of time rambling about:

We'll be using it for updates on scanlations, fanwork, and anything else YKK related that we can think of. Funness!

Back in YKK ch 72, Takahiro takes Makki-chan to the market on the scooter Alpha has lent him while she's doing her wanderyahr. What does Makki buy? Nothing but sasage (red beans). Stupid Taka and us gajin don't get the hint: red beans and rice are served to a girl as a celebration of getting her first period!

This info painfully pieced together after I found a link to a blog today :-P that has background on YKK. And the blogger was too shy to come right out and say it - I had recently read about the custom, but didn't know sasage were red beans.

Of course, the average, fairly-smart Japanese adult would have figured this out. Another reminder of how much we non-Japanese are missing when reading YKK.

Uh, are you referring to me or to the link I made an entry about? I didn't come out and say it because I was just giving that as an example of the stuff on that site.. But yeah, on that site, it's not plainly stated, but it's not hard to find from the links provided. Maybe I'm just weird, but hunting for stuff seems like part of the fun to me...at least in regards to YKK. ;)

Sure, I was saying your info helped me connect the dots. I 'm not averse to hunting for info, but the reference to beans is pretty obscure for someone non-Japanese, especially since it's in a rather delicate area.

So the chance that I would ever have known this important plot element is vanishingly slim. This, and other discussions of YKK subtleties I've read in the forum, make me a little sad about the things I'm inevitably missing.

Nice blog, Hekima! It's fun to find so many creative YKK fans out there.

And I do love that weatherfish! ^-^

All the more fun to investigate further! In my mind, the real tragedy is the increasing capitalist nature of mass media these days in English speaking countries. As soon as any media attempts to make you think, you can guarantee that a lot of people won't like it. So, it's a pleasant change to see some people thinking seriously about what is being put before them rather than accepting it wholesale.
