I just picked up the September issue of Afternoon and wanted to share with everyone. It's a color chapter. The girls go swimming. Alpha, Kokone, Makki and Maruko. Alpha wears a sleek blue one-piece, Kokone is in a conservative white one-piece, Makki is in a yellow bikini, and Maruko is in an impressively filled-out black bikini. It's finally here, the fanservice chapter. It looks like Makki and Maruko are becoming friends. There is one picture of Makki with her hair slicked back from the ocean and she's looking over her right shoulder to talk to Maruko that is especially beautiful. Our little Makki's all grown up.

You tease! My girlfriend picked books ten through thirteen up for me because she saw them at a bookstore...well, I say 'for me', but she's also a YKK addict, and wanted to read them before giving them to me. The catch? I won't actually *get* them until just after Christmas. You know, when I bloody fly in to Chiba to come and pick them up. *sigh*
Oh, and since this is my first post, I'd like to make a special note of thanks to the translator. I'm entering my third year of Japanese studies (even though my major is in a totally unrelate area) in University as of, er, tomorrow, and reading through YKK has been a really enjoyable way to work on the language, even though my reading speed isn't the fastest. This is definitely my favorite manga, even if Ojiisan's dialect is almost incomprehensible. *grin*

I was wondering how Maruko & Makki would get along once they met. They both have "strong personalities". :-) So this should be a very interesting chapter.
Now if only our friend Nai, the pilot, would pay a visit. It would be great to see his first time interaction with either Kokone or Makki. Come on, Alpha's coffee is worth flying out for, isn't it?

A recent post to news:rec.arts.manga indicated September is the season for beach and swimsuit themed issues, and YKK was also mentioned.
There have been some issues set on the beach but I don't think as many as 10 (one every year).

Early pictures of Maruko show her with scruffy gingery hair. After comparing her own appearance unfavourably with Kokone's I believe she decided to try & do something with it. Maybe she uses henna? Or whatever works on robot hair. She ought to know about dyes & pigments.

Well, there's a question of whether manga hair color should be taken literally, or if it's a device to help tell the characters apart. Tho people *do* seem to be able to distinguish robots easily (as in ch 129) and maybe it's because of hair color.
Or Maruko could have completely replaced her hair like Sensei did for Alpha when she was hit by lightning...
