There's an article in the LA Times (July 2, 2005) about growing large vegetables in Alaska.

Unfortunately free registration may be required, but accessing the article sans registration might be possible from Google News and searching for the keywords "alaska vegetables".
No mention of persimmons or chestnuts, but there's a nice reference to a large world-record sunflower from the Netherlands. :)

Yep. I grew up in Anchorage (roughly an hour or two south of the Matinuska-Susitna Valley). The freak-of-nature veggies were always a big attraction at the State Fair -- the Anchorage Daily News would run the occasional story about them. Hey, in Alaska we like to do everything big; Texas has got nothin' on us. ;)
P.S. You can also try using bugmenot.com if you don't want to sign up for latimes.com. It's a service where people post user IDs and passwords they've created for free-registration sites so that anyone can use them. Usually works pretty well, although some sites are more diligent than others about purging bugmenot IDs.
