Howdy,
The winds of fate happened to blow me through my local Kinokunia (alright, I did take a detour to stop in) and I picked up the July issue of Afternoon with chapter 107 in it. I'll scan it and get raws up tonight. I'll provide a translation as well, if anyone feels up to editing.
All in all, these last few days have been a bumper crop for YKK fans.
Best,
Dave

Howdy,
Whoops, I wasn't paying attention. Defiler is already working on Chapter 107.

I'm not done scanning 107.. I'll finish it tonight. First four pages are here, though: http://hellninjacommando.com/temp/ykk107 Still improving my scanning technique, but it's starting to look decent.

Howdy,
How are you scanning the pages? By that I mean, what techniques are you finding to work best on the Afternoon paper?

I scan in at 600dpi, greyscale, with my scanner's auto-tone turned off. Then I load a saved Levels profile (one for each chapter), which keeps the blacks uniform from page to page, etc. I think for chapter 107 it's like blackpoint 93, whitepoint 190.. something like that. Then I create a channel (saved selection) for all of the small text.. invert the selection, and gaussian blur the rest of the image. If there are big uniform grey patches, I select those areas, and use Smart Blur on them with a pretty strong setting, like 35/75/High. If they still look blotchy, I use Clone and the Blur tool to smooth them out. Next, I use Burn to push all the blotchy blacks down to a nice uniform tone. (Afternoon's blacks are extremely splotchy.) This is really important for night scenes.
Next, I resize down to 1200 pixels height. I re-load the saved selection from earlier, invert again, and use Unsharp Mask to do a little sharpening. Finally, I use Dodge and/or the eraser to remove any stray dots or flecks that made it past the other filters. I do this after sharpening, because Unsharp Mark tends to make them more noticeable.

Oh, you'll also want to put something like black construction paper on the other side of the paper. This drastically reduces what you can see bleeding through from the next page.

Howdy,
Do you cut the book apart to scan, or just try to balance the book on the scanner?

I use a razor the cut the pages from the book. For larger things, like the YKK artbook, I go to a local printshop and have them slice the binding off with a guillotine.

Sorry that only the first 10 pages (of 16) of 107 are scanned and uploaded. I've been super busy with work recently. I'm going to finish the last 6 pages tomorrow evening.

Howdy,
I am sure everyone appreciates you doing the scanning, especially since you take so much time and effort to do it nicely!

Thanks. OK. 107 raws are up: http://hellninjacommando.com/temp/ykk107
Once again, the last page turns out to be insanely difficult to fix up. I'm not totally satisfied, but at least it looks much better than the original.

Howdy,
Thanks for the raws! The scans look great, by the way. I know how challenging it is to scan that crappy newprint Afternoon is printed on.
Best,
Dave
