Kokone is the cutest.
Alpha is too much the "elder sister." Kokone is less sure of herself, less experienced, and more excitable. Alpha is beautiful, but Kokone is kawaii.
I especially loved how she reacted to a letter from Alpha.

I'll admit that when Kokone was introduced, I didn't find her to be particularly attractive. She was rather more frumpy and mousy than Alpha.

But as Ashinano's style smoothed out, Kokone became very attractive. The image of her in the bottom panel of this page is just adorable:

Hmm...when you put it that way, I have to agree that Kokone is "cuter" than Alpha who is more "beautiful". Even though I still like Alpha better.
But just you all wait--Makki-chan is going to out-cute them all when she gets just a little older...heh.

After much careful analysis (ie, looking at pictures) I have decided that I can't decide between Alpha and Kokone. I was flipping through volume 10 last night, and came across the chapter where it snows. One of the first things she does is grab a handful and taste it.. how cute is that!

Random tangent...
I decided to name my next computer Kokone because I like the name (before even seeing this thread). I was mulling over lots of different ideas and decided on a YKK charachter.
I have no idea what the name means, but I like the way it sounds. :)
And yes, you read correctly... I name my computers. thus far I have Ryo-Ohki, Ayanami, and Belldandy. The iPod is named Skuld. ^^;; Yes, I'm a dork.

There is nothing wrong with naming your PCs. I named mine after the three magi supercomputers in Evangelion. The naming scheme is kind of ironic since they don't work very well when networked together. >.>;
Anyway, back to the question at hand. I would have to say the cutest character is probably Kokone. I'd like to say it is another character, but given the way Kokone's character is handled in the manga, she is meant to be the 'cute' character. Makki would fall under the 'adorable' category, Alpha the 'beautiful' category, Maruko is 'quarky,' etc...
The question is just a little more than rigged. ^^;

Alpha is beautiful, Kokone is cute, and Makki is adorable, but Maruko has something special. I like her best when her hair is unkempt and she's working on her paintings. At those moments, she's very casually sexy, and I like that a lot.

OK. I'll go with Kokone, for now.
I'm thinking of the second OVA, when Ojisan lets her stay at Alpha's. That look on her face when she's between the sheets, snuggling Alpha's pillow... ^ ^
I expect Kokone to have a mature relationship with Alpha pretty soon.
But I admit, Makki has great potential!

I can understand the confusion. The first time it came up, it was hard to read. Thankfully, in chapter 118, it's much better spelled out and it's quite clearly "Hatsuseno".

You know.... Maruko is preeeeeety cute in that latest installment. I've always liked Maruko, I know she's come over as rather pushy and brash, but I've always thought there's a big underlying insecurity behind all that. She's quite a vulnerable person actually, brings out my protective side :)
Currently it's no contest though. Makki is cuter than a very cute thing on Saint Cute's day.
